Post - baby question

For all the STM, how long estimated did it take for you to get back to your normal size after baby? I'm due oct 13, and am a bridesmaids in December 28.

I was about a size 8 pre baby so wasn't super fit or anything

Re: Post - baby question

  • I think you're going to get varying answers as everyone's bodies are different. I was one that could wear most of my regular clothes throughout my entire pregnancy and by the time I returned to work 6 weeks postpartum I was back to my regular wardrobe. My mom on the other hand hasn't lost her baby weight from me 26 years a go (now some of hers is due to depression and now age but I have heard of younger women taking a while to loose it.).

  • I was around a 4 the first time and post baby even after I lost the weight (all but 3 lbs) I was around a 10. My body completely changed shape.

This time I was a 10/12 and have gained minimal weight. My goal is to be back to pre-baby #2 weight by February. I'm hoping I'll be back in a size 12, but I have no idea if that will happen since I tend to take a while to "shrink" back.

The first time I was a size 3 pre pregnancy and after I was a five (pants size). It took me about three weeks to close my jeans again but about 6-9 months of walking and working to take the weight off. The second time I was a five pre pregnancy and a size 7 after (my hips stayed both times) and that time with breastfeeding and lots of walking it took me about 4-6 months for the weight to be off. I wore my jeans 7 jeans by 6 weeks

Edit- I also come from a family that bounces back quickly for the most part. My mom walked out of the hospital in her pre pregnancy pants with my sister and I and a week later was wearing them with my brother. My sister left the hospital wearing her pre pregnancy pants with both her daughters

It isn't so much about the body fat stores that you're going to consider, but your body also shifts and needs time to go back. I lost the weight really quickly, but it took awhile for my jeans to button and feel normal and for my shirts to fit my tummy the same way. I worked out the whole pregnancy and think that it might have helped me to "bounce back" fairly quickly. I was in my sister's wedding 5 weeks after I had my daughter and I bought a dress that was far too big because I assumed I'd be huge still. I am usually a 4, and I could have comfortably worn a 6 for that wedding.

From outsiders' perspectives, I looked totally normal/back to my pre-pregnancy body at 5 weeks PP in the wedding. I personally didn't feel that way, but I look at pictures and think it's pretty dang close. It'll depend on your body and your recovery! I think that length of time will actually help you to feel pretty good by the time the wedding rolls around!

  • Yep it totally is different for everyone and your recovery takes a big part of it. With my first it took 9 months with my second I was in prepregancy clothes at 2 weeks. I'm in a wedding in November and ordered my dress a size bigger than normal. I plan to try it on one month pp and get what I need altered by my grandma.

  • About a year and a half after I had my son I was 20 lbs smaller then before I got pregnant !
  • For me I didn't feel like I was back to my normal shape until I finished breastfeeding. None of my shirts fit right. Especially for the first 6 months. I had to size up on everything. I feel like my hips are permanently larger. Even at the same weight I was having difficulty getting into the same size pants.

  • I never fit in the same pants again after DD. I was a four pre pregnancy, and after I never got below a six. And I started running and doing 5ks monthly. My hips were completely different. And after DS Got back to a six. But my breasts never went down.
  • My son turned 2 in May and I never did get back to pre-baby size. I was around an 8/10 before, gained 57 lbs and lost 20 right away, abother 20 over 2 years. I was a 16 for a while, finally got down to a 12 by the time I got pregnant again.

There are a lot of factors to consider:
    - how much weight you gain during pregnancy
    - how much effort you put into getting back in shape
    - genetics (do the other women in your family "bounce back" quickly?)
    - you may get down to your pre-baby weight but find your body has changed so much your clothes still don't fit. Not only can your hips spread, but your shoulders and rib cage can get bigger. Plus your boobs may be bigger till you're done breastfeeding, and they may stay bigger, or get smaller . . .

As far as dress shopping, I'd wait 4-6 weeks after baby comes to order and then get it taken in if need be.

  • With #1, I could resume wearing most things 6 weeks post partum but they didn't really fit the same. My clothing size and weight was back to prepregnancy numbers but had to buy new things in different cuts (especially pants). It took about a full year to really be "back to normal".

Wait as long as you can to buy the dress, worse case is you have to have it taken in.
  • It took me around 9 months with dd1 and a year with dd2. I'm one of the unlucky ones who doesn't lose 1lb while breastfeeding. Both times I have gone back down to my sz 2/4 wardrobe after nursing.
