Did anyone else have a miserable experience with gripe water? We tried it yesterday and it made her vomit and her gas pain seemed worse than I've ever seen it. Borderline scary. She also was drooling like crazy.

Yes my LO got explosive poop. Needless to say we don't use it anymore.

  • Seriously considering Exclusively Pumping. LO will be 8 weeks tomorrow and still takes nearly an hour to nurse. I'm sick of sitting on the couch feeling trapped in my home. I know when he gets bigger he will become more efficient but I'm exhausted. I touched out.

I know in my heart I won't do it... but I can't stop thinking about it.
  • I guess this is feeding related... Do your LO's always burp when you burp them? Mine burps about 50% of the time. And I give him quite a while to burp and try several positions. I feel like this has to be contributing to his gas issues...

She is 5 weeks by the way.
  • How is everyone getting enough milk to freeze? I feel like all I do is bf and pump and have nothing stored in the freezer yet! My husband gives the baby 2-3 pumped bottles a day to help, and he eats 4oz each bottle. I'm almost 6 weeks pp and go back to work in 6 weeks. Makes me nervous I'm not going to be able to get anything stocked up!
  • @foxa319 I only give a pumped bottle 2x a week. I pump about 8oz a day to freeze. When I'm most engorged after she's slept 4-6 hours at night and then after a feeding sometime during the day. If I gave more bottles I wouldn't be freezing close to this amount but I'm obsessed with having a stash while I'm home to breastfeed. DH Will be taking over primary care for 3 days a week I'm at work so he will have plenty of bonding time then.

@amslam15 yes. That's when I feel she normally is signaling she needs to burp and I take her off and burp her. She doesn't ever come off the nipple on her own.
TTC: 1/2014 BFP: 9/24 EDD: 6/8/2015 Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.
  • @amslam15 yes this happens to me, too! I never thought about him might be needing to burp tho, @dancegurl1118. Cause he usually only does it towards the end of his session, so your theory makes sense. I may utilize this information, thank you!

Anyone else have a LO who likes to grunt and stretch and take your nipple with her when she is breastfeeding? Ouch!

Haha yes. Like a little puppy biting something and shaking his head back and forth. It hurts, but it makes me laugh every time.

In addition to burping once you unlatch, you can gently push LO toward you, to stop the pulling.
  • Yesterday was horrible. LO screamed all day, only stopped when nursing. I don't know if this is cluster feeding or reflux. I've read that nursing soothes the reflux but he wanted to eat every time I offered the boob. But if it's reflux, I feel like it's a viscous cycle of giving him more BM. Per started him on probiotics on Tuesday, so hopefully it helps with his fussiness.

Thank God for DH who took little man for a car ride last night so I could shower and have a few moments to myself. I felt so guilty about it, but I was about to lose my mind!!

  • To those using probiotics, what kind are you using? I want to see if that will help the traumatic gas and pooping.

Peds office gave us a sample of Gerber Sooth Drops. It's a 10 day supply. The cheapest I've found it is Amazon, $23 for 25 day supply.

  • I've heard nothing but good things about Klaire labs Ther-biotic infant formula probiotic
  • @courtyowl427 mine is doing the same thing past two days. She wakes up, eats, then is spits up, no clean burps- then wants to eat an hour later and again and again. I am exclusively bf so I read babies who do shouldn't spit up as often. I haven't introduced a pacifier and wondering if I should bc I think she's eating just to sooth?!
  • Anyone know what's good and bad to eat for breastfeeding?

We are using the Gerber soothe probiotic drops as well per our pediatrician. It's been about a week and not sure if they are doing anything yet but we are desperate to try anything to help with LOs gas and spit up!
  • Just gave in and gave her a paci. Couldn't take it anymore
  • 1) LO is 4 weeks old.

    2) We're doing breastfeeding and a bottle of breast milk every other day.

I just got a real nursing bra, as opposed to the sleep bras I've been existing in. It's so awesome to feel some normalcy.

  • Does anyone else feel like lo is always on the boob? I feel like my supply "should" be able to feed twins right now between my lactation smoothies, cookies, pumping, and endless boob stimulation...sadly no. I just hold out hope that my supply will increase so she gets more milk at one time and I can go a couple of hours between feedings. Until then I'll just accept my role as milk machine.

    Yes. All of this.

  • Just tried out the whole "natural breast feeding" position, it was great. She latched on without me having to even touch my breasts, which is a first. It seems almost stupid that we aren't taught this position, it's common sense to use gravity in your favor! She seemed so relaxed too...I wish I could do this position in public.

I've tried this a couple of times and it just doesn't work for us. I intend to keep trying it as time passes, tho. Maybe once he is bigger or has more neck strength or is more used to being on his tummy it will work. It'd be awesome if we could use it, it would help with my random back pain when nursing a lot

  • @mellymar the only place near me that sold founders was out of oatmeal stout. There are some places that have it on tap but I'm not up for all that. I went all over looking. Ended up with this in a four pack and I got some all day IPA to try. Not a fan of the IPA. This however is so yum!! Hope it will increase supply!!

LO had two week docs appt today ( but is almost 3 weeks). Turns out he lost 11 OUNCES from last docs appt and is a full lb down from birth weight. I have to supplement with formula so that started today, and am supposed to pump every other feeding without feeding LO to see whatiI'm getting. Thoughts so far:

    1) not upset about giving formula in general- super sad I basically starved LO for two weeks. I can't even think about it.

    2) did first pumping session without feeding LO first and got 2oz out of one boob and 2.5 out of the other. This seems like enough to feed him if it keeps up every time I pump, right? I wonder if he's just not good at getting it out of the boob?
  • @SmashJam that's a great amount to pump!! I'm jealous :) my LO is much better at nursing now at 6 weeks, don't give up if you don't want too, you can do bottle and breast for now. Try not to feel too bad, we are all learning as we go!! I had the same guilt though
  • @SmashJam I also have to supplement with formula. I also felt terrible for basically starving my kid. Try not to let it get you down. That IS a good amount to pump, tho.

@SammeMotley Tallgrass Buffalo Sweat! That shiz is good! I forgot about it otherwise I would have listed it, too. Mmm. Oatmeal Cream Stout...yum

for all the mamas who are breastfeeding, how long does your LO stay on the boob?
(better answer would be how long they stayed on at a week old, but that was a while ago for everyone else)
    im just curious.
  • I have a slow eater and chronic comfort nurser. At a week, she would easily spend 20-40 minutes per side. She sometimes still does at a month but seems slightly more motivated during the day.

With my first, he was always 15 min per side and never a comfort nurser. Efficient. It has made this one challenging because I think I know what its "supposed" to be but every kid is different. And its hard to be patient when sleep deprived.

I also have a nurser who lingers at the bar and will nurse for comfort. At a week I don't remember how long exactly, but it was a long time. Probably 20-40 min. And I was just beginning to switch sides at that time, I think. So around an hour, or more, total. Now its the same - he will spend 15-30 min per breast, but he is more efficient at getting the milk and does not begin to fall asleep during the first 10 min like he used to. Also, when he does begin to drift off, he will still take large pulls from the breast, but they get farther apart. Now, its rare for him to spend less than 15 min on one side. So usually 40-60 min total

    Edited, its late. Er, early

  • @JessHeppell it was like 20 minutes each side, and most of the time was spent trying to keep her awake. She's more efficient now and does about 20 minutes total, not much time spent trying to keep her awake but she would comfort nurse as long as I let her.

@JessHeppell My LO is 13 days and still consistent with his nursing that he did at 1 week. He really varies and doesn't seem to be on a set schedule the way a lot of other LOs seem to be. Sometimes he'll eat for 5 mins, other times he'll be on there for hours. Though typically if he's on for 5 mins he's battling sleep and will be on and off for awhile. I know he's drinking, though, cause I can hear him gulping even when it's been a long time.
  • 1. LO is 6 weeks old.
    2. Pumping with occasional BF

I'm considering adding in formula for one bottle at night, any advice on how much to give him? The OB gave us samples of Gentlease, what has your LO liked/not liked?
He's normally eating around 4-5 oz each bottle breastmilk but I'm assuming formula would be different?
  • Our entire feeding plus burping takes about 40-45 minutes.

I plan to pump for the first time today- how long does it usually take? Total newb here
  • @cheriep3 we give 1 formula bottle a day at the 9/10 pm feeding before bed for the last 3 weeks or so. My milk production dipped and I was having trouble keeping up with what lo needed and he always seemed starving, so as per pediatrician we started this. He is on similac for supplementing. My little man is 6 weeks and eats 3-4 oz of formula. I do find that he spits up more with the formula bottle so I'm way more diligent about burping! Oh and my pediatrician recommended trying to give the formula bottle at the same time of day every day!
  • @slr1229 I do about 15 minutes. Sometimes I'll get a second let down and go a smidge longer but once the milk stops flowing I stop. The pump isn't as good as baby as getting milk out so when it stops you're not empty (you're never empty), it just can't get the rest.

I read that u can try applying firm but not painful pressure starting at the top by your armpit once the pumping seems like it's done. This helps move milk that was left behind. It worked well for me, in case those new to pumping are interested in trying.

Right now I mostly pump at night during a longer stretch of sleep, just enough to take the edge off of the engorgement. I'll do one Boob and get 1.5-2.5oz in 5 minutes, depending on how long it's been since the last feeding.

When I pump bc we are giving a bottle, I wait to see how much LO drinks, and pump to replace that anount. When I'm back at work, I assume I'll send 3-4 4-5oz bottles to daycare so I'll try to pump about that much each day. Hopefully a pump break will take 20 min or less start to finish. If I need a freezer stash, I'll add night sessions or power pump.
  • Thanks everyone for the tips.
