Baby Naming Explained

Re: Baby Naming Explained

  • The dash names may have started as a joke/legend, but they are most definitely a real thing now, I have teacher friends with dash names on their student rosters.

You do know that half those names you mentioned originated as racist jokes and Email chains right? And that the jello and dash names have never been recorded by the SSA?

Never saw the email, but these kids would be about 10-11 now. Maybe that's where their parent got it from? Sad. And I am not sure A-ia wasn't recorded. I have a friend who worked as a telemarketer who ran across that one too.

La-A has never been recorded. Not once.

Ladasha has been recorded multiple times.

A name needs to be used 5 times in a year to be recorded.

So I have a hard time beliving people when the say they've seen a variation of La-a. Is it possible someone named their kid la-a? Sure. Is it likely given that it's never been recorded that hundreds of people on the same forum have actually met the mythical la-a? No.

  • So... after reading through this discussion I'm now second guessing my name choice for a girl, Aerilyn Faye. I really do like the name, but now I'm wondering if my child will have a hard time with it when she's older? It's one of the only girl names I could get my husband to agree on.
  • @metalmommyocalypse I think Aerilyn Faye is very pretty. Somewhere like the Baby Name board here will probably give you lots of hate for it being a made up name, but I like it. As someone who grew up with a "different" name, I wouldn't worry about that name giving her any problems. It'll probably be one of those names that are questioned initially, because people don't want to mispronounce, but then they'll rave about it. Or at least, that's been my experience.

  • I taught a boy named Captain Kidd. I thought that was bad until I met his older brother... Billy The Kidd (his middle name was actually "The")! I wanted to scream at their parents!
  • Two of the worst names I've seen are Chesticle and Notorious. My mom taught a Flor Roach.

  • I worked at a large children's hospital for 9 years. We saw some really terrible names. Mercedes Bins/Benz, Hennessy Courvoisier, trucker flood and many many boys named Remington Gauge/Gage. We also had an ABC (pronounced Aaaa-beee-saaay).

OMG - Khaleesi is number 755 in popularity for 2014. Game of Thrones has truly taken over. At least it's spelled correctly!
It's not even a name, it's a title! It's literally calling your kid Princess in another language.

  • I know kids named Ahdom (Autumn), Kynoah Micajah, Wonderful, LaDanity, Tempest, Fury, Rane, Michael (but forcibly pronounced Mikhail ), Eoyn (Ian), Kylee, Marleigh, Marlee, Brilee, Brileigh, Zayden, Avram, etc. Naming seems to be a game of anything goes these days. My daughter's name is unconventional, but not hard to spell or pronounce (Shelton. It's a family name). My son is Lukas, which is only an unconventional spelling in the states.
  • I worked at a call center and my SO still does. Some of these names make me want to gouge my earholes out. We've heard some awful ones ourselves: Sha-a (yes, a "dash" pronounced name), Princess, Saije (just spell it right!!!!), Zayden (not the worst I've heard and gaining popularity), etc. My mommy brain won't let me remember anymore off the top of my head but some names make me wish some of the moms had learned to spell before writing on the birth certificates.
  • I like picking and unusual name for my little bump. Growing up there was 12 Shelbys in my grade so every time somebody said it I would have to find out which one they were talking about. My SO is a Zachary so he feels the same. We don't want our kids to have that experience. So therefore we pick unusual names.
