Tonto is a fictional character, the Native American assistant of The Lone Ranger, a popular American Western character created by George W. Trendle and Fran Striker. He has appeared in radio and television series and other presentations of the characters' adventures righting wrongs in 19th century western America.

Tonto made his first appearance on the twelfth episode of the radio show (which aired on station WXYZ on February 25, 1933). Though he became as well-known as his friend, Tonto was originally created just so the Lone Ranger would have someone to talk to. Throughout the radio run (which spanned twenty-one years), with only a few exceptions, Tonto was played by English actor John Todd.

The character was portrayed on television (arguably the most well-remembered version today) by Jay Silverheels. This was by far the highest-rated television program on the ABC network in the early 1950s and its first true "hit".

    Hehe. I know who Tonto is!! I don't know if this is a wide known expression but I always say "slow down Tonto" when someone is driving too fast.

    I never really knew for sure what it meant but I always assumed it had to do with a Native American of some sort because I remember on Look Whos Talking the kid said "take that Tonto" and was beating up a Native American.

    If my husband let ANYONE call me an idiot (or anything derogatory) his days as my husband would be numbered.

    It is a nickname!

    We have covered this 1000 times now...

    I have a great husband and good friends.... I know my SN isn't original as some of yours but it's mine none the less.... If it means stupid in 10 different languages that I will have to deal with it!
