Thumbsucking

Anyone have experience with this? My girl seems intent on finding her thumb as she is endlessly chewing on her fists. I keep trying to encourage using her pacifier but she's really hot and cold on it. Am I just being paranoid?? I've known grown adults who still suck their thumb. Freaking out!!

Re: Thumbsucking

  • When my LO sucks on his hands it usually is a cue for me that he's hungry. Is she doing this while awake or in her sleep? Just a thought...I might totally be wrong on this.

My DS is also hit or miss on taking a pacifier.

  • Same as pp, my LO sucks on his hand when he's getting hungry, we also use a pacifier and he uses it and likes it.

DD isn't a fan of her pacifier either she rarely takes it but started sucking on her hands too, she does it even if they're covered and even when not hungry. Homestly i kind of hope she'll take it up as a habbit if she wont take a pacifier, she's been using me as a pacifier and im worried about how she'll cope if when i go to work.

As for weaning her off of it i say we'll deal with it when it's time to do so lol
  • I've always heard people say that it's a great thing when a baby sucks their fingers. A sign of intelligence, and the ability to self soothe. I wouldn't worry about it.
I started to suck my finger when my little brother was born ( I wanted to be the baby still) but I eventually got over it, and no harm done.
  • My EBF babe who is now two months old still can't keep the paci in his mouth. He's been sucking his thumb/entire fist for a month now. It allows him to self soothe in the middle of the night, and when things wake him up during naps (we make it a point to not be super quiet when he naps). I sucked my thumb and my mom never made a huge issue out of it. I personally don't mind that he sucks his thumb. It's damn cute. I've been told multiple times "it's easier to take a pacifier away. You can't take the thumb away". I am sooooo over hearing that.
  • I hope my LO is a thumb sucker. My older child was and she was and still is an awesome sleeper as she learned to self sooth and put herself to sleep. I know it potentially can cause crooked teeth but so can a pacifier.
