Need Advice Please

Hi Ladies,

I am 32 weeks pregnant, 26 and a first time mom. I have a lease on an apartment that will expire in March. The roof outside my apartment door, in the hallway is leaking and has been for months. The tiles are rotting and smell really bad. The carpet underneath the tiles gets wet as well. The landlord has said he will fix the roof for months. Yeaterday I noticed that there are roaches in the apartment as well and two of my windows do not open and he has said he will get them fixed and hasn't. It's a nightmare. My boyfriend is supportive and perfectly okay with me moving in with him. I'm just worried about moving at 8 months pregnant (though it's only 5 minutes away), and the possibility of my landlord taking me to court. He has been very nasty and invalidating when I tell him that it's a health hazard. What do you suggest?

    Yup wss^^^ and make sure to email your landlord with all the details of your needed repairs so that you have documented proof that you asked for the repairs to be made.

    Do you have a tenants rights organization in your town/state? They can often give free advice.

    Take HIM to court. Sounds like a slum lord. Take pictures and send him a certified letter..or whatever your city's laws are. You may end up getting money back!

    I absolutely agree with this. Each state has their own landlord/tenant act which is designed to protect BOTH parties as long as they are following the rules. Documentation is key! Do as pp suggested and have documented communication and take pictures. In most states, you cannot be penalized for vacating early if the landlord is at fault for breech of contract. (You likely will still be required to provide a 30 day written notice that you will be vacating.)

    Okay, thanks. I've decided to leave. I have emails from three months ago where he said he'd get the roof fixed. I also have a ton of pictures I took months ago. My baby comes first and if it goes to court so be it.
