Re: FFFQ - Flame Free Friday Questions, 7/10

  • not really a flamable topic, more of just a question that i dont know where else to post.
do any of you guys have strangers touching your LO in the carseat when out and about? how do you keep it from happening?
anyone make a sign explaining not to touch their faces/hands?
im really not good at conflict and want to stop the possible issue.

A carseat canopy is an option. I felt it was too hot where I live for it right now so I keep on my sun and bug cover (britax) and love it! A Muslin blanket is another good option.
  • Loading the player...
  • ^^ I only have problems when I don't have a muslin blanket over it. But today I went without and I was taken aback by how many people want to see/talk to/touch the baby. The blanket is so much easier.
  • Does anyone actually have any knowledge on botox safety while breastfeeding? (yes, I suppose i'm horribly vain). From what i've read online it depends on the doctor, which isn't super reassuring. But then it's locally administered and would be really dangerous if it actually entered your bloodstream so how would it get to the milk? Just curious if anyone has any info...
  • So LO sleeps next to our bed in her rock n play and I guess motherly intuition wakes me up when I hear her start to stir 3 hours after her last feeding. So I get her out and start making a bottle while she's still asleep. When I sit down to feed her she stirs a bit and will drink the whole bottle. But wondering should I wait until she starts to actually wake up to feed her in case she sleeps longer? I want to help her sleep longer and eventually through the night so I don't want to interrupt that by getting her out and feeding her if she isn't completely awake. She eats every 3 hours during the night and she's almost 6 weeks old.
What do you ladies think? I'd rather not wait until the last minute to start making a bottle then she's full out crying but I'd like to have her sleep longer and maybe I'm not permitting that by getting her out
  • I've read a lot on here about people preparing their bottles one at a time. Is there a reason to do that? DH and I prepare about 6 bottles at once. I thought as long as they were consumed in 24 hours they were fine that way. Is there a reason I should start doing one at a time?

  • ^^ good question. We have considered doing this. Do you fridge yours? Or just leave them @ room temp? We should be able to leave them @ room temp as it doesn't say anywhere on the formula mix to need to fridge if not used within a certain time frame?

I was told that it depends on the formula and to read the lables of it and see what it says. But I also read somewhere that they should be refrigerated if you aren't going to use it within an hour.
  • Just realized we can probably call the formula company and ask them. I believe most have hotline #s on the canisters

how old was your LO when you had for first PP bm?

ETA: anyone else still unsure if they have enough clothes on LO? we keep our room slightly below 20 degrees centigrade (so a little below 68 drgrees F) and we only really put a onsie on him, its not super thick or anything, just long sleeves with legs. im kind of worried that he isnt warm enough, as his bottom lip seems to tremble occasionally (nurses said it was normal) we also dont really swaddle him fully when he sleeps, (just a recieving blanket tucked around him) does that seem like enough? his hands always feel cold but thats cause theyre never covered..
do we put more clothes on him? or maybe wrap him in a thicker blanket? or do you guys think he sounds fine?
  • @JessHeppell mine was either the same day or the next
  • How do you know if you have a clogged duct?
  • @mvargas12 I get these giant lumps that don't go away with feeding or massaging. They are tender to the touch sometimes. It takes a few days of nonstop warm compress for them to go down for me.

For those who are breast-feeding, does anyone else not have a baby who looks at them while they breast-feed? She either just look straight ahead or closes her eyes and goes to sleep. Everyone always talks about the bonding, but we never make eye contact. Granted, she has never been an alert at the breast, and it would be hard for her to look up at me, but still...

"They" say to dress LO with one additional layer to what you are comfortable wearing. On warm days I think this can be scaled back because you don't want LO to overheat.

While sleeping my LO has on full sleeved pajamas and I wrap her in a hospital style blanket and put a hat on her. The hat eventually falls off in the night, but we put it back on after every feed. We swaddle her with her arms out (per pediatrician recommendations) so sometimes her hands are a little cold too. If it's a cooler night I also wrap an additional fuzzy blanket around her.

I know there was a whole post about this but is anyone still dealing with jaundice? My LO's bilirubin level was still the same as it was 2 weeks ago (he'll be 5 weeks on Monday). The pedi seems to think that it's because I'm EBF and said it would probably go down if I did 3 days of formula, but she didn't encourage this. She just threw it out there. I'm worried and just want the level to keep going down!

It worked for my LO but it has almost cost us BFing. His levels went down and he gained weight but, it's a struggle to BF now. I've read that it doesn't hurt for them to be a little jaundice. It's common for BFing.
  • @dancegurl1118 my LO just stares at my other boob while I feed her. Haha. Or she passes out.

@katyertl my lactation consultant said after two weeks and hitting birthweight I don't have to wake my little one at night. That freaks me out some nights because she'll sleep over 4 1/2 hours.

Does anyone else have that electric tingle while they breast-feed? It doesn't happen when I pump.

  • @elizab14 ok good I was like ummm am I missing this "bonding?" She stares at my boob.. Also the electric tingle I get is when I let down. If I let down before she gets on I feel like dying because it's so strong, if I let down while she's on it feels just tingly. Never happens with pumping.

  • Re: the PP BM, I didn't have one until Friday (LO was born Wednesday morning).

Re: clothes at night - we do not have AC so our LO wears a diaper and a T-shirt and we swaddle in a muslin blanket, leaving the arms free so he can move them and also get some air. If its cooler its a onesie with sleeves and the swaddle in the muslin blanket. I check the temp by feeling his feet when we wake for feeds / diaper changes. Also, if its cooler its easier to deal with as all I need to do is close the window and turn up the heat a small bit.

Re: BFing and jaundice - we had to supplement formula for weight loss, but LO was jaundice also. Once we added in the formula then yes, the jaundice was gone within probably 3 days, it went quickly. But I have also heard that EBF babies deal with jaundice and if I could still EBF and my LO was a little jaundice, I would *try* not to worry about it unless the ped was worried about it (easy for me to say! I can imagine if I were in your spot in would worry whether the ped was, or not!)

@devyns2nd that's why I don't want to do it unless the pedi thinks it's completely necessary, and she didn't seem to. He's gaining weight like a champ. I've also heard it's no biggie and I know it's stupid, but I just don't want anything to be wrong! Thanks for the reply!

ETA: just saw your response @mellymar! I'm trying so hard not to worry because everything seems to say it's no big deal. DH and I are both super pale. I should probably let this little one enjoy a tan while he has one
  • @amccoy129 My LO has the same thing going on. He's 6.5 weeks. Last check in with Pedi was after that thread at 5 weeks. She said not to worry about it at all, its from the breastfeeding and if he's gaining weight and doing well its not an issue. She didn't even mention formula.

He is so tan we are checking him for some other metabolic issues that might cause the flushing. I mentioned that we hadn't gotten the blood tests back and my good friend momentarily thought I meant genetic tests. Thankfully DH thought it was funny . . . And LO doesn't look like he belongs to his pale parents!

  • Does anyone else get uterine cramps after pumping? I started pumping a lot this week because work was nuts. I found myself doubled over with cramps after the 2nd and 3rd pumping each day. Like birth after pains. I am 6 weeks pp, thought my uterus should have shrunk back down.

I've been keeping all my sessions after the first short, 10-12 minutes max. This helps a little bit and I think I am still getting close to empty in that time.

I make eight 3 ounce bottles and keep them refrigerated. My formula says to keep refrigerated and it's good for 24 hours so I just make a whole days worth and then warm as I need them. :)

  • im honestly a terrible judge of heat, i get so hot super easily. man babies are so difficult. -_-
  • I got so paranoid the first few nights when we were swaddling, I was never sure if LO would be too hot or too cold. I felt much more reassured when we switched to baby sleeping bags (LO kept breaking out of his swaddle and prefers to move around I think). The sleeping bags come with a chart of what the baby should wear underneath depending on the room temperature so it took the guesswork out of it.

why doesnt my baby react to burping? >.< he is so farty (has no problem/fussyness when releasing though) and i try burping him so it wont happen as much anymore but i never get any lil burps out of him.
how do i make the gas stop >.<

ETA: is it safe to roll up a baby's shirt sleeves?
we have a 0-9 month carter sleep sac for him bur its way too long in the arms, how bad would i be if i just rolled them up when he sleeps?

This is the chart that came with my sleeping bags. https://gro.co.uk/pages/what-to-wear

If you're swaddling then because it's so close to the skin it tends to be warmer. In the FAQs on this page there's recommendations for this company's swaddle cloth.

  • @JessHeppell I roll sleeves at the time. Especially on the 0-9 month carters fleece sleep Saks. Works great. Stays rolled. Sometimes LO brings his arm to his face so I feel more comfortable rolling so he's not bringing loose fabric to his face. On his back at he should be able to easily pull his arm away though.

  • @JessHeppell Do you put a little pressure on LO' s tummy while burping. I find if I burp my guy with one hand on his tummy holding him upright and patting his back with the other it is more successful. Also, it's a pretty firm pat. Not hard, but harder than I originally thought.

Agreed. When LO was born I was wondering why burping on my shoulder didn't work until I realised I had to hold him up higher with his arms over my shoulder and my shoulder pressed into his stomach.

I'm gonna try this stomach trick, as sometimes my LO takes quite a while to burp. But I did want to second the firm pat. It seems like we're almost thumping DS on the back sometimes.

  • How many diapers and wipes do you go through?

We go through four packs of 23 diapers a week. This is marked as a "month's supply" on Amazon. We are about to finish the "six month supply" of wipes after just one month.

    Is this crazy?

We change LO every time the blue line appears. This could be four diapers in an hour and a half. Is that wrong?! I don't want him to get a rash. Also, he cries when he has a dirty diaper...
  • I go through about 10-12 diapers a day. Unless she's screaming I change her with every feeding.

  • We go through a lot but we are saving a ton using reusable cloth diapers. They work great! We use Charlie Banana brand. : )
  • We go thru a lot of diapers. Hubs just bought a pack of 88 on Tuesday, and we are almost out of the case. We also change when we see the blue line and he will also cry if he has a dirty diaper. At the rate of 10 a day that should have last 8 days, but no

I rinse my pump parts in hot soapy water once a day, I keep them in the fridge in a ziplock bag in between uses (from kellymom) and then I sterilize them in the Medela quick steam bags like every other day, when I'm throwing her pacifiers and bottles in there as well. Very easy and saves my sanity.

Do you rinse at all between uses?

I finally ordered additional pump parts so that I'm not having to wash them after every use but love the fridge idea.

    Eta hit reply too soon

I don't think it's crazy.. Some days are definitely heavier use for us than others especially when we think he's done and change him only to be followed by further messing.

I would much rather go through the diapers and wipes more quickly then expected then letting him sit in a dirty diaper even if it is just a little mess.

I had bought a box of 96 newborn plus had about 96 more size ones given to us and we are about 90% of the way through a box of 216 size ones. We just hit 3 weeks. I think we average about 12-15 diapers a day and usually 1/2 wipes for every diaper.

We usually use cloth, and with the cotton prefolds we have to change everytime he pees. It would be this many diapers a week. When we use disposables we use honest company or babyganics, no white line, I only change when he poops or when the dipe feels heavy. I'd guess we are catching 3-5 pees. He's still never wet. And no rash. I only use wipes on poop diapers and dirty baby hands not on pee dipes. This all seems to work well and saves a lot of money and environmental resources. It works for us, I'd change more often if he had rash or smelled! We are using disposables quite a bit right now. Just overwhelmed with two kids, cloth is just one more chore.

  • Especially with how the diapers wick away the pee, if it's just a little wet I don't change the diaper. She's never had a rash on her bottom nor does it ever look irritated. So really I change her every 2 hours except at night.
