I'm 14 weeks and I've already had 4.... 3 of which were in the first trimester due to ongoing spotting and a scary bleeding episode. My 5th one will be the anatomy scan at 18 weeks 2 days. However, I've been reading some scary stuff about how ultrasounds are potentially linked to autism and other neurological defects... Anybody know anything about this? My mom is an RN and always deemed them safe, telling me to obviously avoid radiation exposure.
I've only come across a few things here & there about his as I'm trying to avoid giving myself even more anxiety about this possibility by listening to Dr. Google.
So, how many ultrasounds have you had this pregnancy or in previous ones? Am I able to decline future scans after the anatomy scan? Seems like my doctor does them at every appointment.
Thanks ladies.
Re: How many ultrasounds have you had?
I trust my doctors to know the safe amount of ultrasounds to administer. I believe the risks are greatly outweighed by the benefits.

I think it would depend on what the purpose of the u/s are for. Since you're concerned, I wouldn't do any elective u/s. The anatomy scan serves a really good purpose, and sometimes docs offices make it to where they only do one scan, and it's at 20 weeks. I think any u/s your Ob would do would be for good reasons, like to check fetal growth or fluid levels, or head position. You can always ask if they're necessary!

Only had the one anatomy scan for DD.
I don't know anything about the supposed connection between ultrasounds and autism or other disorders. If you heard it from Jenny McCarthy I wouldn't put much stock in it though.

I expect a lot more as I am high risk.
Our first twins had scans at every visit, which was 1-2 a week from 28-35 when they were born. They're fine.
I have had 1 so far and will have 1 at 21wks, and that is all (unless there is a legitimate problem).
With my first I had an additional one because we couldn't find a heartbeat during my 12wk apt, so my doc just wanted to make sure everything was good. So 3 with my first, hopefully just 2 with my 2nd.
I wouldn't worry!
Thanks ladies, I actually have really awesome insurance coverage and don't pay a dime for any prenatal visits, including lab work and ultrasounds. It's going to cost me maybe $75 total for the hospital stay and that's it
Tomorrow will be my 4th ultrasound (2 bc we did IVF, 1 bc my OB couldn't find a heartbeat, and one tomorrow for the 12 week scan). I had 5 with my daughter and she's a healthy1 1/2 year old.
I think every parent in the world wants to know if there is something that causes autism and because of that we seem to jump to conclusions. I've read studies that say autism in higher in boys, more common among the 2nd or 3rd born child. Seems to me if it was somehow linked to ultrasounds why would it matter the birth order? I also read that kids in New Jersey had a much higher autism rate when compared to kids in Alabama. Turns out the kids in Alabama didn't necessarily have a lower rate, they just didn't receive the same kind of care as the kids in NJ and therefor were less likely to be diagnosed. My point in all this is you can read anything on the internet, if you trust your doctor, and you should, then I would trust him not to put you in harms way, and if you ever get a gut feeling that something isn't right or that you don't want to be doing something don't do it.
