Carters Sizing

I went into Carters to pick up a few NB outfits blacked out and well 28 outfits later realized I may have over done it. :-) I noticed that they don't have the same type of sizing that other brands do. They have NB then 3 months and then 6 months. Is the three months the same as 0-3 months? The clothes look like they run a little larger so I'm wondering if the babies stay in the smaller sizes longer.

Re: Carters Sizing

  • Carter's actually runs smaller than most brands. And 3 months = 0-3 and so on. Love their stuff though.

  • Really?! Yikes. Should I not buy the NB sizes and just stick to the 0-3?
  • I think the NB size is for up to 7 lbs. I only purchased a few items in this size, since I'm not sure how big he will be when he's born. See if you can exchange your clothes for 3m or 6m. I personally wouldn't stock up on the NB size.
  • You might want to at least leave the tags on a good amount of the NB clothes so you can exchange. I believe NB Carters only goes up to 8lbs. Many babies are 8lbs or close to it at birth.

  • 0-3 is 3, 3-6 is 6 and so on. My LOs wore newborn size for about a month but they were also early. I would keep some but not go nuts. Maybe just a few zippered pjs and some onesies, something less fussy to put on and take off when you're changing LO a billion times a day. You definitely will get longer use out of the 0-3.

I personally never liked seeing LO swimming in an outfit so I always had all the sizes (mostly just meaning preemie and newborn).

  • Carters 3m is basically 0-3M but fits long and skinny. So if your kid is long, a Carters onesie should last longer than a short and wide onesie of the same size which would still be too wide when it ends up too short to snap.

For my daughter who was 95th percentile in height, she outgrew Carters outfits when her age matched the size. At 3M we were putting away the 3M clothes. It wasn't until 18m clothes that she started to slow down - she wore 18m through about 20m but she has mostly grown out of 24m now and is in 2t-3t and turns 2 this week.
  • For DS, Carter's ran big. He was a very thin baby. We've purchased quite a bit of NB sizes for DD because DS was in NB for quite a while. So, to answer your question yes 3 months would be 0-3 month and so forth.

  • I found that even though Carters NB went up to 8 lbs 21.5 oz, my son was able to fit into them a bit longer than that. He was maybe in them for about 6 weeks, at which point he was a little bigger than this. Some people prefer to go straight for the 3m but I hated seeing him in clothes that are too big, especially since in August he wasn't necessarily swaddled all the time do the NB sizes were worth it for me.
  • My little man was 9pound at birth and he fitted straight into the 3 month carters clothes. They are really good for tall/long babies! No other brand I've found fitted my bub as well as carter a, hubby is 6 foot 6 and I'm 6 foot..

  • Wash as needed. Both my kids were 7lb at birth. DD was in NB for 6wks and DS for only 2wks. I have to agree with @CaliforniaDream87 that Carters are wide. My skinny kids have always needed to size down in shorts/pants/skirts there.

  • Yes we found that Carter's fit my first LO (boy) a lot better than others because he was long and skinny. The short fat ones in the same size never fit at any point because they were either silly looking wide or too short to snap. But it def depends on body shape. This LO (girl) I kinda skipped onesie and went for shirts and dresses instead. They might fit longer being that it's only when they outgrow width that will really matter. (We cloth diaper tho so I like seeing their little butt.) Just bought a few onesies maybe just a handful of NB and 0-3 mo.

  • I would probably exchange at least half of those 28 NB outfits for 3 month or another size you are short on. Most babies fly through the NB size.

As others said, every baby will fit clothing a little differently, but as a general rule, Carters should fit up to the age on the tag. So when baby hits 3 months you will be looking towards boxing up 3m and getting out 6m.

DD was 6lbs 9oz at birth and newborn fit her a solid month, but she was also 3 weeks early. If term she may have lasted a week. After NB she stayed true to the outgrowing the size on the tag when she turned that many months old. Their clothing holds up really well and is one of my favorite brands.
