Parenting after 35

Pinch me! I think I'm dreaming.

I'm suppose to return to work August 19th. I haven't called daycares yet but the one I planned on contacting still has an opening. I've let the school know the DS 1 and DD will be full time again in the 19th.

I've always dreamed of being a SAHM. DH has always wanted me to but we've just never been able to pull it off. DH told me earlier this week that he had a meeting with his boss Wednesday and planned on talking to him about a significant increase. I always listen but take it with a grain of salt because it usually doesn't materialize into anything.

DH met with his boss yesterday. His boss actually agreed! Our biggest concern has always been consistency. He makes fantastic money in the summer but winter usually sucks. His boss not only gave him a huge increase but also made him salaried! DH texted me yesterday and said 'you can quit now'.

I am SO excited!! I'm not going to quit yet. My leave is thru August 18th so I want to wait until he has a few pays with the new rate and we can be 100% certain that it will work out but we know it it will.

I'm slightly nervous because I do like my job and I do have a good job and I do make good $$. But this is what I've always wanted!! Now I can also go back to school!! I'm SO excited. I really wanted to go back for my masters but have never had time to and now I can!!

Re: Pinch me! I think I'm dreaming.

  • Yay! Good for you guys! Staying at home has challenges and can drive you crazy, esp with 2 kids, but it's nice too! I'm a CPA and have a high earning potential, but I can't imagine going back to work yet. So even on the toughest SAHM day I count my blessings and give thanks that We can afford to do this...

I am so very jealous!  Enjoy every moment.  I wish I could quit my job, but sadly I can't.  Congrats to you and your husband!

  • Congrats!
I got the go ahead in January but I was supposed to be studing part of the time to change careers. Baby boy kept getting sick and finally we just pulled the plug last month and I'm full on SAHM now. It's tuff with a hyper toddler but check out the meetup app and see if there are some mommy play date groups to join in your area. Those have helped me a lot so far. We go to library story time, chic fil-a story time, the splash park etc. Have fun!

  • Thanks Ladies!! I'm super nervous but it's a big decision.  If I think about it for too long or analyze it too much .. I start thinking of all the reasons why I should keep working. But truthfully.. I feel like it's kind of what they say about kids.. if you wait until the perfect time.. you'll never do it.  I'm positive that his new salary will be sufficient.. it will just be a tighter budget then we're used to.  But I have immensely enjoyed my summer so far and being with my kids and being able t cook an actual meal and keep my house fairly clean etc.  Usually, I have zero time for anything.  The fall is by far my favorite time of year and I'm almost giddy thinking about being able to spend so much time with friends and family and our kids around the holidays!

  • Congrats. I've been a stay at home mom for nearly 15yrs. I love it. I had planned to start subbing at the girls school last year but then I got pregnant. So I guess I will try again once DD4 is in pre k.

  • We just got his first salaried check this week. So now I know for sure that I can stay home. Just need to put my notice in at work. Yikes!!! I'm excited but nervous too. I just visited work this week too and my manager must have told me three times that she missed me. :(. I felt kinda bad not telling her. It will definitely be a tighter budget than we are used to but DH also plows in the winter which usually pays pretty good and we have a decent savings account too so I think it will be fine.

I told DS #1 yesterday. He's do excited to be a 'leaver'. Thats what they call the kids at school who don't go to latchkey that get picked up every day. He's never ever been a leaver. He's been in daycare/latchkey/ school
Since he was 9 weeks old!

  • That is so awesome, @niknak1208!  I, too, am jealous!  I can already tell I won't want to go back in November, but maybe things will change by then.  Plus, we made the decision to buy the house, and, while we could probably get by with just fiance's income, it would be tight.

I remember that your job was so stressful for you before your maternity leave. Am so happy that you are able to stay home with your family. :)

  • Thank You jerseygirl227! It's going to be much tighter than we are used to but the bottom line is that the bills will get paid. I really want to go for it. For two reasons. Obviously the first reason is my kids. I have always worked full time and I used to commute 51 miles one way too! So I have always been the mom that couldn't make the school activities and had to take the latest time slot for conferences. I'm thrilled to be able to participate!! My kids just light up when we are there with them! School is the second reason. I feel like I'll be stuck in my area of specialty I HR if I don't continue my education. I'm not sure I would have had time for it working full time!

I'm nervous. Excited. All at the same time!

  • So glad to hear that after your DH's first check, you are confident it will work!  Try not to feel bad about leaving your manager - I also recall that you had a lot of work drama during your pregnancy.  I suspect you will be much happier staying home and going back to school. Very exciting!
