The name Quinn

When you hear the name Quinn, do you think of a boy or a girl first? What do you think of it as a boy name?

Re: The name Quinn

  • Boy first.

Love it on a boy despise it on a girl.

  • Boy. It's a masculine name, despite many girls being named it.

  • I immediately think girl, DH thinks boy but I think it works either way.
  • You'll hear mostly boy on this board, but I think of it as a girl name and love it for a girl. I've never known a boy Quinn, not even a character on tv. All of my associations with this name are feminine.

I think it's a name like a Taylor or Aubrey that started out masculine, but is unisex now and skews more feminine. (Unlike people naming they're daughter James, Wyatt, or Parker.)
  • Quinn is a male name. I have met both boys and girls with the name but I prefer it on a boy.

    EDD for #1: 3/19/17
  • Boy. Hate this name on girls.

I know way more male Taylors than female. That is not skewing more feminine, despite my girl T. Swift. I also have only known one Aubrey and it was a dude. Never met any Quinns.

  • I think of the show Daria. The air-head high school popular girl was named Quinn.

As such, my association with people who give Quinn as a name to girls is well-meaning but extremely out of touch WASPS.
  • I think boy. I've only known one Quinn IRL and it was a guy. I personally don't really like the name at all. It's okay for a boy, but really bad for a girl.
  • it is a surname...end of conversation and is bad for both male and females as a first name

Daria was my life in middle school!

Also, it reminded me of Detective Quinn from the TV show Dexter. I actually like Quinn for a boy, but my husband vetoed it for that very reason, because "he's a tool."

  • I hear a girls name, I immediately think of the MTV show Daria, her sister was name Quinn. For a boy, Quintin? Call him Quinn for short if you like the name.

  • Girl -- because of Daria's little sister!  I love it as a girl's name.
  • I've only ever heard it on a girl. Could be depending on where you live
  • I know it's a boys name but I've only heard it on girls.

  • Girl. Mainly because the first and only time I ever heard this name IRL was on Quinn Fabray, the cheerleader on Glee. I had no idea it was a masculine name until this board.

I know it is a boy name based off history and such, but I've only ever seen/heard it on a girl...I prefer it for a girl myself but wouldn't question either way
  • I've only heard it on girls, but it sounds very masculine to me. I wouldn't consider this name for either sex.
  • It's our daughter's middle name.
  • My husband's name is Quinn. His sister had a daughter and that's now her middle name. :)

I think of it as a boy name that is also used for girls. I would probably first think the person was a boy, but not be surprised to learn it was a girl. I don't think of it similar to the name Audrey or Lindsey, which were traditionally male names that have turned nearly 100% female. It reminds me of names like Drew or Reese, names that are historically boy names, but not surprising as girl names - names that have kind of become unisex. It's a nice name and I think it's perfectly fine to use it on either. I know one Quinn and it is a boy named Quentin nn Quinn. I like it for either, but I personally don't have hard rules about what is a boy name or a girl name. In my mind there is a wide spectrum of names from supremely masculine to supremely feminine and a lot fall somewhere in between and I think that is perfectly ok.
  • I know it's a boy name but I still think girl. Only known girls with that name.
