Do people really buy $800 strollers?

I've had a few people tell me they had the uppababy vista and loved it. I was doing some research on strollers tonight and saw the price tag! I'm not trying to sound ignorant but there would be no way my DH would ever agree to spending this and I think I would be embarrassed to put it on my registry!
That being said if money was no object I would totally buy it.

I wouldn't put it on a registry, but I am guilty. When we had our first in 2005, I insisted on a Bugaboo which was about $800 a decade ago. It was definitely more of a name brand/status symbol thing for me, but what's crazy is that we have LOVED that stroller and it has held up so well that we'll be using it for #4 this year. We have bought 1 Bugaboo, 1 Bob and, for vacations, a couple of super crappy umbrella strollers, so when you break it out over the years and number of kids, it's actually been pretty economical:)

I can't fathom it either. I even saw one at Buy Buy Baby that was like $1100. The twin stroller we registered for is $300 and I even feel like THAT is pricey!

A stroller isn't something I would spend that much money on but I have heard that stroller is really nice. I have been watching craigslist for a good quality stroller at a decent price because I can't make myself spend a lot on a stroller...

I feel the same way. I'd love a vista, but just can't fathom spending $800 on a stroller when this will likely be our only child, and I could never ask someone to buy it for me. After a ton of research I found a stroller that I think is comparable -- it is by a German company named i'coo -- the Photon stroller. It's a convertible stroller, meaning it changes from bassinet to upright seat, no separate bassinet. Baby can be facing or away, and it adjusts to table height as well. I found it on Amazon for $300 and jumped on it. It was delivered in 2 days, took 5 minutes to put together and is BEAUTIFUL. It looks so expensive and well made. I'm so excited! Now, I have yet to use it with an actual baby, but it has stellar reviews from other parents. Check it out.

Nice if I could afford to splurge like that . Or plan to use it multiple times . I'm going w the Chico key fit 30 & caddy .

I'm over here trying to figure out how to pay for a $179 Baby Trend double stroller. I can't fathom paying $800! But I guess if you can afford it . . .

We have te city select and after the second seat, accessories etc it was over $700. And I registered for it and people went in together to get it for us. This will be baby#3 and the thing is still great.

We've had friends who bought cheaper ones that broke often so by the time they were on kid #2 they had spent the same amount plus the hassle of broken strollers.

The stroller we're looking at is $430, which I thought was ridiculous enough! We want something we can use for the long run though, as we agree on 2 kids and I'm hoping to ease DH into the idea of 4.. I want something durable so I dont have to spend money over and over. We've registered for it, but really thats mostly for the discount we'll get when no one buys it for us. I'm now sure how happy I'd be spending a full $800 though, that's almost double! Yikes!

We registered for a Graco Travel System that's $300 and I felt like that was ridiculous!!! I'm expecting us to buy that ourselves with the 10% off coupon we'll get.

I can't fathom spending $800 on a stroller or letting anyone else!

800 dollars is way over my budget!
I can see however for some if you are just starting out your family and plan to use it for multiple children the price can be justified. I had a graco stroller with my son and a jeep jogger and they both lasted as long as I needed them too. This will be our last baby and we thought about splurging on a lighter stroller in the 300 range but I haven't made a final decision yet

We got the stokke xplory stroller which costs $1100 but it was a gift from my MIL and it came with a free carry cot because of a promo that was on at the time. I couldn't have spent that much on a stroller if I were paying for it myself lol. But she loved it and was intent on the baby having that. No complaints from me ;)

I could totally justify spending that much, especially if we were having multiple children, and it converted to a double stroller. I really wanted a City Select stroller, because it goes front & rear facing, plus it turns to a double.

If you use your stroller, A LOT, I think a good stroller is important. I regionally bought a Graco Travel System and I absolutely hated it. I have a City Mini now, and absolutely love it.

My mum brought my sisters pram for $700 and she's buying me the same one, still about $700 but I really appreciate it I told her I wouldn't spend that much, but she offered to and wouldn't take no for an answer so I'm sure this pram will last all my children honestly don't plan on getting rid of it after this baby as its my first. I can wait to use it though!

    Now I'm embarrassed.

No. Even if I were rich, just no. DO you know how dirty my graco is from 2 children and taking it out to pumpkin patches, parks and whatever. My double was 300 and that's enough.

I like the features of the high end strollers like the uppa baby vista but I couldn't justify the price. I did however find that the Britax Affinity had a lot of the same features but was half the price on Amazon so I checked it out at BBB and fell in love with it. I like that the seat comes totally out of it and the infant carrier snaps in. It also faces forward or backward.

I have that stroller on my registry and my mom just purchased it for us! I was planning on buying it, but she wanted to get us a big ticket item. I really like the features, and felt it was worth the cost. I've seen much pricier strollers by the way, so I don't find the price shocking. It's expensive, but we live in a big city and don't really drive so worth the cost to have a great stroller. Plus it converts to a double.

You can't get a stroller for less than $600 (new) in New Zealand! It's times like this I wish I lived in America...

I don't see anything wrong with spending the money on a good stroller, especially if you plan on having more than one child and/or using it all the time.

That being said, my husband and I wanted a bugaboo (after research I knew it was the one) and I looked to find one on Craigslist. Which I did and only paid $200 for it. We are the third owners and it doesn't look like it had been used ever. But, I totally would have saved the money to buy a stroller that I wanted because I am going to be using it a lot and for multiple children.

Also wanted to add...my fiancée was married before and has a 6 year old daughter. His ex pulled out all the stops when she was pregnant and purchased/registered for all high end items, including a Bugaboo stroller. He said it was beautiful, but very cumbersome, especially folding it, bringing it up the front steps, etc. (we live in a city too, most houses have a set of steps in front.) Anyway, they got frustrated with it, sold it, and purchased a City Mini. They loved it; his daughter is still using it to this day.

We registered for a $500 BOB stroller but I kept and eye on Craigslist and found one in great condition for $95. I just bought it myself and took it off the registry.

We have a city jogger stroller and a bugaboo bee and I can say that the city is worth the price if you'll use it a lot, and esp in a city or on uneven terrain. The bugaboo bee...less worth it. The folding mechanism on that is horrible. I've used cheaper strollers and can say for sure that some of the pricier strollers are 100% worth it. I'm pretty cheap and I'd spend money here.

I think different people just spend money on different things... We registered for the City Elite stroller because when I did all of the research it was what would be most useful to us over the longest period of time. I knew based on the reviews it would actually last, and I generally prefer quality versus quantity, so I got it to intentionally be the only stroller we would have. I would love to get a City Select that converts to a double when we have our next child as we would like three, and that would solidly cover our bases. If there was a stroller that suited our needs even better at a higher price point, I would save and get that one. I agree that upfront it can look like more, but over time, I think these expenses even out.

This is a generalization, but something I have noticed nonetheless:I think big ticket items like these, especially ones that have lower priced alternatives, get jumped on by people who just think of money and purchasing, or what is important, differently than others. I don't get cable or a sports package or take semi-annual trips to Disney, but I do want good strollers because we walk a lot in terrains varying from hiking conditions to, as someone else was saying, cobbled city streets. It just depends on your priorities. What seems outrageous to one family (I would chain myself to the house before I would get dragged to spend $90 a person per day at Disney) is exactly what the other finds rewarding.

I live in a neighborhood where a $1000 stroller is somewhat of a status symbol for parents, and most of them are so cumbersome and take up so much room that I don't know why they even bother. But I could never afford one anyway so what do I know? haha

I'm a firm believer in splurging for a good quality stroller.  The push, handling, and comfort that come with a "higher end" stroller make the extra cost totally worth it!  I've pushed different Graco's and Safety 1st ones and the like, and they are not user friendly at all.  That being said, I am all for buying an $800 second hand in great condition for $300 or $400 haha.  We really wanted the Peg Perego Skate stroller when I was pregnant with DD#1, but my husband was having a hard time with the $800 price tag, so we found one brand new in the box on kijiji for $500...saved us a ton, and we got the one we really wanted in the budget we were hoping for.

I got an Icandy stroller which was normally 1,000 for 500 but I want a good stroller that will last thru multiple children.

We are buying an Orbit Baby G3 travel system and it's $1000. We aren't registering for it though, we are buying it ourselves. We like the features and we can afford it. I say, it's your kid and your money, do what you want!

Just because someone doesn't want to spend $1000 on a stroller doesn't mean they can't afford it.

We purchased the uppababy vista last month for our first baby. I have 3 friends who have all had this stroller and cannot say enough good stuff about it. Apparently, the customer service for repair and replacement pieces is amazing also...out friend received a whole new base (for free) after their vista got damaged at the airport (since it was in the vista travel case).
I know that uppababy just came out with the 2015 version...so we found a new 2014 (including the bassinet that LO will use in our room for the first few months) online for $599. Snugglebugz.ca .I think it's money well spent.

    1) My DH is really tall, like REALLY tall... and there is a chance he will be staying home with Baby. He also had a major knee reconstruction surgery, so should have the most extendable handle to push LO around in. Otherwise, his back will be toast. We looked at other strollers. Graco, BOB, Peg, none of those had handles any where near high enough for DH to use more than 1 block.

This was what immediately took a lot of the lower priced strollers out of the running for me too. We are both significantly above average in height, and I know from life experience, that not having frequent use items high enough will kill our backs. Fortunately the Elite has the adjustable handle bar that raises pretty high, but if it hadn't worked for us, I would have kept looking for other options even if it meant going higher in price.
