Beach Tips?

I've seen some post about travel but has anyone been to the beach 1st trimester? I went with DS about 23-24 weeks and I cried everyday! I was miserable, any tips how to survive the heat and actually enjoy my time? DS (3) and Step son (8) and DH and I are who is going so chilling in the AC isn't an option, we do have a big beach canopy/tent so that will help, just looking for any other helpful tips!

Re: Beach Tips?

  • Drink lots of water, wear plenty of sunscreen, and spend time in the water to cool off. I just spent the day on the lake when it was 110*.  It's possible, just take care of yourself.

  • Take a mister fan...... I think you can get them at Walmart for like 4 bucks. It is a saver of lives!!! I filled mine up with ice water and just spritzed myself all day. Also, I love Frogg Toggs, its a cooling towel that stays cool as long as its wet..... buy them in bulk they are amazing!!!

Ditto the water and sunscreen. My last pregnancy I went to the beach for the whole day. I thought I was being smart - staying under the canopy etc. Didn't realize the lower portion of my legs weren't in the shade. Ended up with second degree burns despite 50 spf. Make sure you reapply every hour. Oh and have fun!

  • Ouch! @MrsJG3 we will be there 7 full days, I hate that I really am dreading it! I LOVE family time and vacation but I just don't want to be hot and miserable!

Thanks for the advice @SoSweetTea1124 and @mrsgillham14 !

Maybe get one of those hand held mister fans? That might help too. I am sure once you get there and soak it in you will have fun. Try to relax and enjoy your vacation!

  • @TheBeggsBunch I will try to share from my experience next week! My Dr told me it was a great point in pregnancy to go and to stay shaded and sunscreened....I'm not so sure feeling like your going to throw up off and on all day and adding the heat will make it the "best" time we shall see.

  • I went and it was fine. I couldn't remember which sunscreens I should avoid so I just didn't wear any. Grant it, I was in nj not down south... Got a slight burn but it was ok. I'd rather have a burn than use chemicals I shouldn't be using.

I've been using Thinksport sunscreen (ewg rating 1) and have been happy with it. I tried the Honest Co one but both my toddler and I were still getting pink after being outside, even with reapplying.

  • Badger Balm sunscreens are great, and for anyone planning to babywear, they will also not stain your wraps/carriers. I second cooling towels although I prefer enduracool or something like that (check amazon) over froggtogg. Water is your best friend, and shade. Me personally? I hate the beach, I despise sand. When we go down south we almost always rent a house, as close to the water as possible. A few years ago (pregnant with my 1st) our porch literally sat on the beach. It was glorious, AC and big porch fans and I could chill on the porch while everyone was on the beach and even still yell back and forth.

  • Ice chips too. Having a stomach full of water, in a hot day especially, always makes me feel like garbage. So chomping on ice chips to stay cool and hydrated is nice.

  • I went to the beach 2 weekends ago and it was fine.I actually ended up staying at the house by myself one day because I was bleeding but the next day I was perfectly fine. I only had one moment where I was starting to feel sick so just make sure you take various snacks with you.

Just drink lots of water and have fun! I got a bit sunburned and tumbled around when I was trying to get out of the water but it was fun and you may feel better while you're out there.
  • Hey, I just went to Florida last week and was there for 6 days. Let me tell ya... the sun is not your friend when your pregnant! I wasnt even on the beach for long periods of time and it made me sick. I had the highest SPF sunscreen on and I still got burned. I drank lots of water, powerade and kept snacks with me. Good luck and hope you have a good time!

  • @skschnake oh no :/ I am so afraid of this! My husband doesn't even want to go now because he said I will be miserable but I can't dissapoint the kids :(
  • I went to the beach last week at 7 weeks. I brought an inflatable raft and spent most of my time floating around in the water. I wore sunscreen and reapplied often with no sunburn. It was a great time!

I had my two step boys with me. They are 8 and 5! They had a blast.. however.. step mommy ehhh not so much. I stayed under the umbrella as much as I could. I even used their sunscreen on my body, the facial sun screen and still got a burn. I have a olive complection and normally dont burn. Im thinking pregnancy hormones changed something haha  I didnt get in the water as I wasnt feeling very bathing suit cute lol Not to mention all the wonderful food aversions I had been having. Nothing suited my appetite at all. I live in Louisiana so I am use to the heat. I guess Gummy Bear not so much. It was even breezy next to the water! Im sure you will have a wonderful time, plus there are so many things to do other than the beach im sure! :)

  • @skschnake Our boys are 8 and 3 so I will have to help, My dr said pregnancy changes your hormones and you definitley burn much more easy, he said hes seen the worst burns ever were on pregnant women. I am so worried about food because generally we make 1 big grocery trip and then eat dinner out all week and trying to decide what I want to snack on and for lunch and breakfast for a week in 1 trip will not be fun! I make multiple trips to the store now to get what I want, guess I need to suck it up, not e/one gets to take a vacation or enjoy pregnancy at all.
  • @jennpar21  I literally made it on Poptarts, gardettos, almonds and blue powerade. We went out to eat a few times but nothing satisifed my hunger. My kiddos loved swimming in the pool offered by the resort ! which offered tons of shady areas for the mommies who were hot! lol

You floated on a raft in the ocean? That doesn't sound safe lol.

  • I was in the bay.
  • Ah ok that's dangerous for a whole different set of reasons lol (just kidding) but I always get freaked out that the bay is dirty. I know moms like it because it doesn't have the waves for the kids. Then again, I think lakes are gross too.

Paranoia is not a quality I possess. I'm perfectly healthy and enjoyed my vacation.
  • I spent. The day the the river the other day. I used baby, spf 60, and no senct and hyperallagnic lotion. Worked great. Even tanned alittle. However I drank lots of fluids and water, and even had snacks, and I thought it was enough but it wasn't. I had to go on I'v fluids for a few hours the next day. So drink water even if you think it's enough it's not. And I used an umbrella for shade, and stayed in the water lots. Be careful guys ! Stay really hydrated !
  • Omg! @Knottie08171795 that is terrible! I will definitley drink a lot! I hope you feel better now!
  • I do ! Only good that came out if it was I got an early ultra sound.
