March 2016 Moms

What are the things you cheat on during pregnancy?

You know all the no-no's we aren't supposed to do during pregnancy - no sushi, no lunch meat, no soft serve ice cream, no [insert item here] - what do you find you have cheated on and had no guilt doing so (or maybe just a tiny bit of guilt)? (This might be way too early to ask this, but especially BTDT moms, you know what you've done, spill it!)

  • I'm about to go have a sandwich from Jimmy Johns, because yum.  I've been a regular visitor to Dairy Queen throughout every pregnancy.

  • I was addicted to the deli sandwiches at the air base we were stationed at my first pregnancy. I would just microwave the turkey for 30 seconds before eating it. It was like damned thanksgiving in my mouth! I'm so sad we are not still there :(

My favorite sandwich last time was turkey with pepperjack and mayo heated up in the microwave for 30 seconds.

  • I was crazy with my first and avoided everything. This time I'm eating sandwiches with deli meat every day and am loving my fro yo!

  • What? No fro yo???

This is my third baby and I never knew that! My first two survived a LOT of fro yo!

I didn't eat deli meat with my first but did with the second. Not sure if I will with this one or not.

I also went white water rafting with my second before I knew...not sure if that's a no no but it kind of seems like it should be! :)

Definitely lots of fro yo/soft serve. All was well with LO but I did end up with GD, so there's that.
  • I didn't know about the froyo and I will pretend I never read this.
The froyo thing is the same as soft serve ice cream https://www.livestrong.com/article/134842-soft-serve-ice-cream-pregnancy/

  • I had plenty of soft serve ice cream with my 1st. I had a sip of beer or wine here and there, and a little champagne at my best friend's wedding around 20 weeks.

  • Monday and Tuesday i had turkey croissant sandwichs. I did not hold back with my first and i won't with this one either. Well i didn't smoke or drink, lol.
  • I never knew you weren't supposed to have soft serve or fro yo! I ate deli meat last time and probably will again. I've also been eating cookie dough the last few days. I'm guessing we're not supposed to due to raw egg? I also ate over easy eggs last time but I probably won't this time around. A few months ago I got food poisoning from an undercooked egg and I do not want to go through that while pregnant. I'm pretty sure I just contradicted myself....

  • Soft serve ice cream? Since when??? It's only been 3 years, I couldn't have missed that much...

Well in that case I guess I indirectly cheated a LOT last time.  I ate deli meat too, but I'd zap it in the microwave first.

Seriously though, what's the deal with the ice cream?

I had over easy eggs this weekend (only just read yesterday that those are supposed to be avoided). I rarely eat eggs...not sure what I'll do there.

I've had a few sips of beer/drinks here and there and will probably continue. It's teeny tiny amounts so that doesn't concern me.

  • Oh I forgot about over easy eggs...yup I'll cheat on that too because yeah....eggs....

And @meg_2006 that's been a "rule" through all of my pregnancies because of the article I posted above (risk of listeria)...but chances are it would be more people getting sick if the restaurant really had a problem.  I trust DQ just because I used to work at one and I know their cleaning rules.  I don't think I'd do one of those buffet places though.

I didn't cheat exactly... I didn't know fro yo was bad and had a tiny bit the other day (3yo's leftovers.)  Also, I had a few bites of salami that I thought was ok because it wasn't sliced deli meat.... oops.  I did avoid the raw milk gruyere and stuck with the gouda...

A few bites is ok, right?  right??  O_o
  • I followed all the rules my first preganacy. This pregnancy a lot of the diet rules I'm already following due to still nursing my 2 year old who has severe food allergies. I did cheat on having a drink it was very light on alcohol and i didn't know I was pregnant yet. If I was able to I would cheat and eat at a buffet. Lol I'm starving today.

  • I'll be eating overeasy eggs provided I'm the cook and cook them super thoroughly. I often do this mistakenly anyway and then that way the yolk is half cooked and half runny. :) I will also eat all the DQ in the world!!

I'm going to attempt to avoid all deli meat and caffeine. I've been caffeine free since April 1st so I'm hoping I don't end up with cravings for coffee or pop. :)

Oh lordy, I ate a ton of Subway sandwiches, Sonic chili cheese dogs, sushi, froyo (I've never heard that one), and I made my own Mayo with raw eggs.
  • I've tried to stop eating at mcdonalds because I am too overweight already. But today I got a large fry and it was awesome.
  • Lunch meat and a few soft cheeses. I was strict with my first but now I do it sparingly without guilt.
  • I traveled to Thailand during my first pregnancy and had a healthy baby so I now believe if that food didn't do me in that pretty much everything here is fine in moderation. My last pregnancy I craved turkey sandwiches! I haven't started experiencing any cravings yet, just aversions to pretty much everything.
  • I clearly need a list of what not to eat... No froyo or soft serve? No over easy eggs? All I knew about was unpasteurized cheese, rare meat, and deli.

I don't think I can go 9 months without a medium rare steak though...
  • I'm never gonna give you up! (Coffee that is) I would probably die from exhaustion if I didn't drink that. Although I am limiting my sodas lately (or trying too)

I didn't know about soft serve but I'll probably only get it from the little mom and pop place we have just down the street. SOs sister works there any way so I pretty much know the condition that stuff is in.

I also forgot that cake mix was a no-go and ate some with out thinking on Sunday. I had just popped DDs birthday cake in the oven and the bowl was just about spotless by the time I remembered (for what it's worth I did it with DD knowingly at the end)

Other than that im REALLY trying to stay away from most don't eat/drink things. I'm really freaking out this pregnancy and don't want to do anything that I could feel guilt for if I do have another loss (I TOTALLY beat my self up last time and picked away at every little thing I did "wrong")

  • Apparently I'm terrible. Occasionally a Glass of Wine. Hot tub (5 minutes) then just my feet. Fro-yo. Deli meat. Chai lattes.

ya gotta do what ya gotta do...

  • Sushi. Live next to the ocean and go to Hawaii frequently. About as fresh as you get :) And have yet to have gotten sick from any of my regular restaurants
  • It's not really a cheat, but since I was trying to eat really healthy and not gain too much (I'm overweight to begin with), it sort of is for me.  I just popped open a box of Tagalongs.  I might eat the whole box.

Em... what's wrong about a hot tub? I had a hot bath this morning.

On the other; I cheat on nothing... vegetarian anyway, so that helps. Here in the uk you have plenty of cheeses (like feta, brie and goats cheese) made with pasteurised milk so I don't have to miss out on those. Did not know about tje the soft serve either! Does this include sundays from fast food chains as well?? That would be the thing I'd cheat on I guess!

Hot tubs and baths are not good for baby because they raise your body temperature. While you can cool down rather quickly, it takes much longer for you to cool down internally. High body temperatures have been linked to birth defects, especially during the first trimester. I think the rule of thumb is not to be in water in which you start sweating.

I was so looking forward to hot baths and stocking up on bath bombs once we're in our new house :(
But I'd definitely rather know! Looks like I'll be waiting.

  • Chai tea lattes. I didn't even drink before--for some reason they've become my thing. Just one. Or two.
  • If your eggs are pasteurized (as many eggs from the supermarket are) you can eat over easy same as soft cheeses if they are made with pasteurized milk.
  • I'm glad to see that I'm not the only bad one- I'll follow suit with my first pregnancy- I ate a ton of deli meat (though I didn't keep it as long as I would without being pregnant), medium rare steak, fro-yo, overeasy eggs, soft cheese, some coffee and a small amount of wine here and there (not as often as prepreg, I waited until after the first tri and not a full glass).

My Dr. was on board with all of this and I have a perfectly healthy one year old.
