Baby Names

Name to go with Frederick

Frederick will be either the first or middle name for this baby, after my terminally ill brother. He will go by his other name though. My husband likes Clay though it has no meaning for us and Jeeter, which is a family name albeit a pretty strange one. The name will have to be two syllables at most, preferably one because we have a long three syllable last name. The name Lee (family name) is off the table (we used that as dd2's middle name). TIA

Re: Name to go with Frederick

  • Is Jeeter like Derek Jeter pronunciation?

I believe so. Jeet (like Deet) er. We could probably change the spelling to Jeter vs Jeeter if it is less confusing - it would mean a lot to my mil regardless of spelling and I prefer the easiest spellings
  • Well personally I wouldn't change it to match Jeter because then it screams I love Derek Jeter. Of the two I would pick Clay although neither are really my style. If you stick with Jeeter keep the family spelling

  • Of your options, I prefer Frederick Clay, just because while Jeeter is a family name, it will never not look like Jeter worship.

There has to be another family name you could use from his side, surely all the men in his family aren't named Jeeter Jeeter.
  • The other family names are terrible. Crockett is one for example. And Gold. So Jeeter is the only family name I could maybe live with but I have no idea who Derek Jeter is, so I could see football people thinking it is Jeter worship.

So since family names are out, what other names would sound good with Frederick? Bearing in mind this child would go by that name, not Frederick.

Just to humor you, let me list some of the family names we have to work with.

    Albert (no)
    Glenn (no)
    Randolph (no)
    Crockett (hell no)
    Gold (no)
    Sowers (no)
    Jeeter (maybe)
Lee (already used by us for another child)

The rest of the names are variations of the above (randy, al, etc.). We are using Frederick from my side, so I don't want to use another family name on my side. Even if I did, we are from another country and Frederick is the only name that would work.

Soooooo. What other names would sound good with Frederick? I have no preference with Frederick being the first or middle name, just that our son will go by his other name rather than Frederick.
  • Derek Jeter is a BASEBALLS legend and icon. Although you might not know him literally 99.9% of people do even if it's just from Gatorade commercials or the fact ladies think he is attractive. Albert, Glenn and Randolph are all fine names and millions better than Jeeter. If there aren't family names you like why force it? Simply pick a name you like. The kids likely have your husbands surname to carry on. Just names that sound nice

    Frederick James
    Frederick Anthony
    Frederick Thomas
    Frederick Christopher
    Frederick Michael
    Frederick Ryan
    Frederick Owen
    Frederick Dean
    Frederick Samuel
    Frederick Benjamin

  • Also if he's going by a name other than Frederick it's a HUGE NO to Jeeter.

    Baseball! Haaaaaa! Oops.

Dh wants max of two syllables bc last name is 3 and Frederick is three. He prefers 1, but will be ok with 2.

He has 86'd all of those names already :( I really pushed for Dean.

  • Jeeter is awful, sorry. Definitely will make everyone think of Derek Jeter, whether you know who he is or not (hard to believe you don't). Not a huge fan of Clay either. I think Albert and Randolph are great names, but if you don't, that's fine. Maybe pick a different J name?

    Jeremy Frederick
    Jude Frederick
    Jeremiah Frederick
    Jasper Frederick
    Joshua Frederick
    Joseph Frederick
    Jedidiah Frederick

  • He wants the name Crockett. He thinks it is so cool. He knows how much I hate it so he is not pushing the issue. He just wants a name that is maybe less common and has "character" (whatever that means to him goodness only knows). Explains why he is stuck on Jeeter now. He moved on from Crockett to Jeeter. Oh help me!

    What about Walter Frederick?

Definitely make Frederick the middle name if he's not going to go by it. I have been called my middle name since birth and it's terribly annoying.

I have very little American culture because my family isn't from here.

Albert is DH dad's name and both of them don't like it. Randolph is DH's first name and he HATES it.

Love Jude but my best friend just named her son that. Joseph is the only other one that would make the syllable cut but he doesn't like that. I kind of like Jacob and is a family name quite a few generations back on his side. But of course dh isn't a fan.

Ohhh I don't like Walter but keep the suggestions coming
  • I never understood why people name their child something just to go by a middle name. I get it if he's a junior and the same name is confusing but I don't get naming someone Federick Ryan just to call him Ryan. Just name him Ryan Federick.
  • Okay, I am just going to throw some random suggestions out there with 'character' and see if anything sticks:

    Angus Frederick
    Archibald Frederick
    Benedict Frederick
    Clifford Frederick
    Dashiell Frederick
    Edmund Frederick

Frankly I would tell him he needs to come up with legit usable names say a list of 15-20 and you will discuss them. If the name is a famous surname like Crockett and Jeter they don't have character they scream the exact opposite. He needs to realize the child will grow up and need to be a member of society and hold a job. There have been lots of uncommon names with character listed he can't veto everything. He seems to be pushing for something he thinks will sound cool but Crockett and Jeter do not scream cool not to mention if your child is shy having such a strong surname association isn't going to do him any favors.

Maybe search the SS name list above 500 or 750 or even beyond the top 1000

Jeeter is a little too out there for my taste. Frederick Clay could work, it's not bad.

    Frederick Louis
    Frederick Graham
    Frederick Rhys
    Frederick Colin
    Frederick Elijah
    Frederick James
    Frederick Marcus
    Frederick Jonas
    Frederick Lance
    Frederick Miles
    Frederick Ewan
    Frederick Grant
    Frederick Adam
    Frederick Lyle
    Frederick Odin
    Frederick Nathan
    Frederick Maxwell
    Frederick Ethan

It's a common thing here in the South. I don't get it either, but I don't find it strange anymore because I am so used to it now
  • He likes Garrett and Everett (nn Rhett) but suddenly likes Clay more.

    This. Definitely mn Fredrick.

    Ian Fredrick
    Griffin Fredrick
    Jude Fredrick
    Tucker Fredrick
    Jonah Fredrick
    Reid Fredrick

  • Our main problem is that he works with a ton of people, so many names one of us has an association with and don't want.

    Coworker he dislikes is Ian.
My ex BF of 5 years before DH is Griffin.
My BFF just named her son Jude.
We know a lot of little boys in our area named Tucker, so it is just too common here.
He 86'd Jonah a while ago (it was on my list).
His right hand man at work he had to fire has a son named Reid, so that is out.

    Frederick Louis - I don't like
Frederick Graham - not an option too many Graham's
    Frederick Rhys - don't like
Frederick Colin - will present to him
    Frederick Elijah - don't like
    Frederick James - too common
Frederick Marcus- he doesn't like Marcus or mark
Frederick Jonas - he cut that already
Frederick Lance - he loathes Lance Armstrong but I will put on the list anyway
Frederick Miles - Too common in our area
Frederick Ewan - he crossed of the list before
Frederick Grant - on the list but he doesn't love it
Frederick Adam - not an option
    Frederick Lyle - don't like
    Frederick Odin - don't like
Frederick Nathan - not an option
    Frederick Maxwell - don't like
    Frederick Ethan

  • He read them all and still likes Clay best. Sigh.

  • It's not about what he likes best. It's about finding something the two of you can compromise on.

Right. He didn't want the name Frederick but compromised with me because he knew what it would mean to me. My turn to compromise with him.

Love several on here. I will show him, but I suspect he will still prefer Clay. He can't explain what it is he likes about that name, so it makes it hard to find names with similar attributes to present to him. I just can't be too pushy since I pushed HARD against Crockett his dream boy name and pushed hard for Frederick.

This! Your husband can't just veto every name in hopes to hold out for Crockett or Jeeter. And demanding a certain amount of syllables is only limiting you further. Tell him to get over it and start coming up with some actual suggestions. For every name he vetoes he must 1. have a valid reason for the veto, and 2. suggest another valid name in it's place. Good Luck!

    FWIW, I love Joseph Fredrick!

  • Clay is a huge step up from Jeeter. Seriously grab it while you can girl!
  • Well, I have no issue with going by your middle name. I know of many men who go by their middle name. We southern people are nothing if not quirky.

That said, Frederick is an awesome name. Everett and Garrett are fine too. I prefer Frederick Ryan, nn Ryan.

Last guy I dated before DH was Ryan, one of my best friends is married to a Ryan and my dd2 nn is Rynn (not quite Ryan, but close enough). But yes I love Ryan. It just isn't an option for us.

I like the Southern quirks too. He has always loved the nn Rhett so I guess I should make a stand for Garrett or Everett too, although Clay is sooooo much better than most of the others he loves!
