Looked for a place to put this. Couldn't find one...there is a woman on Facebook who really, really wants to name her child Tarzan...

Re: oh my god names

  • I can't help but think that poor child. It's the mom's choice, but... oyvey...
  • Loading the player...
  • She does know that Tarzan is a guy right? Has she not seen the movie?!?!?
  • Tarzan was hot.. For a cartoon ape man.
  • I found another one this morning; Huxely. I've never heard this as a name? Is it even real?
  • I like the name Huxley, it's a nice homage to a brilliant author and is unusual without being insane. I've never encountered it spelled Huxely however.
Tarzan, on the other hand, is a bit bonkers...

The poor child will never grow facial hair as an adult....

Or any body hair.. They may be thankful for that one.. I know I would be..
  • I know someone who wants there child's middle name to be Lucian where I live this name is illegal but she said it will be ok as long as she spells it differently lol really? Y bother! Poor Tarzan wonder if he will be nicknamed tar

As in Aldous Huxley? Maybe they spelled it wrong?

Where on earth do you live where certain names are illegal?! I've never heard of such a thing. Lucian is a fairly common and very traditional name. I'm baffled by this.

From what I understand, certain Scandinavian (I believe that's the correct term.) countries have very strict naming conventions and certain names are illegal.

  • I always thought my maiden name being hard to pronounce held me back a little bit. People are going to call Smith before they have to try to say my name...part of it is my SN. But Tarzan really think people
  • I met a 1 year old named Blaze over the weekend....Blaze.
  • Is she joking? As a joke I told my baby's dad that if it's a boy he will be named Pilot as a first name and Pita as a middle name.

If it's a girl I told him Bertha as a first name and Evergreen as a middle name. He was not pleased lol.

A kid that comes to my work is named blaze. But they spell it Blaise. But it's pronounced the same.

My cousin's name is Blaze, spelled that exact way actually. It's Spanish since he is half Mexican, pronounced Blahzay. It's definitely an interesting name if that isn't the case though lol

I love the name Blaze. It was on my short list. In Italy we spell it Blaise after the Saint.

Edit: posted before I was done.

I absolutely wish we had naming police in this country. It would start kids off in life on more equal footing. I mean, Kristall Chandeliere Smith is screwed from day one
  • An old co-worker of mines daughter named her kid Morticia, to me that is just awful.
  • There was a patient at the doctor office I worked at (pediatrics) his name was R'Tavion...
  • I know a woman planning on naming her child Donnalynn Lyleanna (which I keep seeing as Lyle-Anna)... Sadly that's the most normal of her children's names.
  • I also know a child who is Abcde (like ab-sid-ee)... And a girl whose name is Female (pronounced Fem-all-ay) because the hospital accidentally put the sex on the name line and the parents just left it.
  • Today at work a girl asked me what name we are thinking- I told her we are thinking Betsy and you should have seen the face she made. It was like "the face" in that sex and the city episode if you all know what I am talking about.
Anywho- this woman legit has two children named Unique and Ivory. I just can't.

Agreed. I know a man named Lucian. Am I missing something on why this name is illegal?
  • I've gone on the name thread a couple of times and have to step away because I end up developing a cramp from all the head shaking. I'm sorry but seriously, Huckleberry?? I can't bring myself to go back and check but mama if you're out there, please, no. I can appreciate the desire for creativity, but there's a reason that many names are not popular. I know there's got to be an HR person out there at least who's with me on this.
  • If I'm correct, Lucian is also another name for the devil.

I *think* that's Lucifer. Lucien may be too, but lucifer is the name used in Isaiah in the bible.

If it is, the reference is obscure. It means "light" and does have the same root as Lucifer, but so do Lucy and Lucas and Lucia. There was even a Saint Lucian. It's a Latin name, and has a French version (Lucien) and Italian (Luciano).

Some countries only allow names that are traditional to its language, hence the restriction.

    Nevermind that's lucifer, not Lucian

This is super interesting to me. Do you have examples of countries to help guide my Google search? I'd like to learn more about this - not really sure why..

  • So my mom told me today that when she worked in a preschool when I was little there was a boy.. I kid you not.. His name was Sh'thead.. Pronounced Shy-they-Ed... But it's spelled shithead.. She said the mom was like 16 but my god.. I think I would have to change my name and I would hate my mom FOR LIFE if she gave me a name like that..

This is a good list of all the naming laws. It's pretty fascinating: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naming_law
  • Just got home from watching Magic Mike XXL and one of the guys stripper names is Tarzan. That's all I would be able to think of if I knew someone who named their child that.
  • I used to work with adolescents and met a Tequila as as well as an Alize - no joke. Recently I met a 1 year old Khalessi., which I kinda like if it wasn't associated with a tv show. I can't understand naming kids such unreadable names.
  • I have two guys (different families) at work who have named their daughters Sailor, Major, and Pistol. We're in the Navy, so I just...nope.
