As a PP said, definitely search this one as there have been other threads on this subject. But, just some food for thought... you should read this article. It explains talks about why the term "natural birth" is inaccurate and that sometimes no matter what the mothers intentions are, interventions may simply be necessary, but it doesn't mean the birth wasn't "natural".

I get the thought process but also "the way nature intended it" also meant a lot of mothers and babies did not survive the child birth back in the days before medicine advanced. Today there are many moms who would like to have a non medicated birth but for whatever reason end up with c sections or decide to have an epidural. It doesn't mean the birth was any less amazing. Modern medicine gives mothers and babies all a fighting chance whereas once upon a time in the age of all natural that would have been impossible.

@jamiem522 "the way nature intended it" is quite a tactless thing to say. So people should just die from illnesses these days? Because medicine is an intervention which arguably prevents "what nature has intended."

It's great you want to try and have a birth with no intervention, but if it came down to yours or your babies life, I'm pretty sure you would drop the "natural" comment and take the help you need.

I understand the way you are using natural and that it's not meaning to be offensive, but it is, as some mums don't have the choice when the time comes and by calling these births "unnatural" you're demeaning their experience and it sounds pretty judgemental and nasty.

I'm not trying to have an argument, I just think it might be worth reconsidering the way you word this opinion. Especially on such a large forum with a vast range of pregnant women and experiences

If the baby is delivered vaginally, then it's a natural birth IMO.

This is just another way to imply that some forms of deliver are in some way inferior to others. Just another way to shame or one up moms, totally unnecessary. First of all, I don't think it really matters how baby I'd brought into this world as long as mom and baby are safe.
Unmedicated and medicated are much better ways to describe labor.

I have zero qualms about accepting meds when the pain gets to be too much. Also, @jamiem522 you are being quite close minded and judgmental. Having a medicated birth or a c-section by no means makes it less natural. Assisted birth maybe, not unnatural. I will still have made and birthed a tiny human. You do you and I'll do me. My birth will be just as natural as yours, no matter how it goes.

I am pretty sure everyone has a right to their opinion and I honestly don't mind that you don't agree with me. From where I stand the term "natural" means without assistance from medical intervention. After reading the article above, I can see how people wouldn't like that term. Cool, so maybe let's not have a thread called "natural birth"... And just a statistic, in America, more women and children die from childbirth because of medical intervention than several other countries, even those without all of our advances.

First of all, I don't believe childbirth can be planned. I'm going to try & go without medication if I can, but in the end I will do whatever is best for myself & my baby. My mother is an L&D nurse, & they refer to unmedicated births as "natural childbirth", but I agree that the terminology is insensitive to women who had to be induced or have a c-section. It should really be called assisted vs. unassisted.

Its always the ones who harp on "natural" that beg for epidurals or end up with a c-section. This will be my third c-section and let me tell yall something, if you line up my son's kindergarten class, or line up their mamas, no one can pick out the vaginally delivered babies or the mama with 3"scars. You also cant tell who was breastfed (and I've breastfed both of my kids so I'm definitely not knocking it), who had the $300 stroller or the one from Walmart, or who wore Pampers vs. Target diapers. Keep telling yourself whatever you need to feel amazing but at the end of the day,we all just want healthy babies....who sleep well

I had epidurals with my first two, the option was there when the pain got what felt like to much. With my last I was at a birthing center and didn't have that option. If you don't "need" intervention I highly recommend trying an "all natural" birth. It was truly amazing, way different than my first 2 and my recovery was way better. (Saying this knowing not all women have that option and no matter how the baby comes out its amaizing)

I won't lie though it hurt like hell!! If I was at the hospital I would have probably given in. On another note my labors from start to finish with my first 2 was 6 hours of hard labor and 3 with my last. I commend those women who can lay in a hospital unmedicated and deliver. I would much rather do it at home or in a birthing center.

We are doing the birthing center this time to. But my babies don't require much pushing to come out, like at all! So I consider myself lucky.

I am hopeful to have this baby in a drug free labor. My labor was only 5 hours from first sign to baby with DS, so Hoping for even faster this time

I despise the phrase "as nature intended it". As a neonatologist, by definition I interrupt nature. I'm only called when there is a problem. If we followed what nature intended every time without an open mind, we would be back in the days where childbirth was the leading cause of death in women and many babies didn't make it out of the delivery room. I would hope anyone old enough to procreate will put the health of their infant over what they want for their experience. How and where a women delivers a baby is an intensely personal decision. Putting labels on it like "unnatural" or making judgemental comments is petty and immature.

Already had one two years ago! After my textbook perfect pregnancy and quick "NATURAL" dilation to 8 cm before I even felt enough to go to hospital. Guess what? My perfect baby is just fine - thriving in fact. I would never call her birth "unnatural." In fact, I personally think C mamas are far stronger and braver than those who pat themselves on the back constantly for giving birth "as nature intended". I laid my life on the line with minutes notice for my child. C mamas say "cut me open. Risk my life so that my child may have an opportunity to live theirs." That is the most natural mothering instinct I can think of. Hope that crow tastes good.

@jamiem522 Nothing I replied to you was judgemental. I was trying to explain to you that your opinion is actually offensive and not very well informed. Throwing in the statistic about more women and children dying in assisted childbirth, also isn't very nice. There are some women on here who have already been to hell and back before they even get to labour. I don't think adding that panic is productive.

I genuinely hope that you have an amazing, UNASSISTED birth, with no pain relief or emergency interventions of any sort. :-)

This is exactly my opinion on the subject. A lot of people in general (Pregnant or not) would be dead without the interruption of nature!!! I myself, have a younger sister who was born at 26 weeks gestation. Unfortunately her twin didn't make it, but almost a year of "unnatural medication intervention" kept her alive.
