Slow Rising Betas

Hello, I just found out I was pregnant last Friday. The Beta was 3,123. My doctor had me retake the blood test on Monday to make sure the levels were doubling at least every 48 hours. The blood test on Monday had a Beta of 4,250. They called with the results today and had me come in to do an ultrasound. The ultrasound showed an empty sac. They had down that I was 5 weeks 3 days pregnant. They said the empty sac could just be because I am too early for an ultrasound. My last period was April 19th and I have irregularly long periods. I think my conception date is May 18th. So 5 weeks matches my date of conception. My blood work this morning had a beta of 5,997 and I have another ultrasound on Wednesday. My doctor is not sure if it is a viable pregnancy or not, but she doesn't sound optimistic. She said not to worry about it and we will look at it again next week. I can't help it, but I am still worried. I took Provera and Clomid at the very beginning of this pregnancy. I was misinformed on how to take the Clomid and my blood test before taking the medication said negative because it was too early for HCGs to show. So right now I am really worried and nervous. Has anyone had experience with any of this? Low rising betas? Empty sac at 5 weeks? Provera/Clomid very early in pregnancy? Thanks so much!

When betas reach high numbers, they tend to slow down and not double. I've actually not seen a first beta as high as yours; doesn't mean it doesn't happen, obviously, I've just never seen that.

My RE does not do ultrasounds before 6 weeks for the reason of probably not seeing anything. I did have an emergency one at 5w4d with my son and I want to say all we saw was the sac but a week later saw his heartbeat.

Thank you. I am so nervous and worried and can't stop thinking about it. And to top it off, last night and this morning I have had some (TMI warning) gooey, brown stuff with a little pink this morning. :(

Although scary, spotting is completely normal. Are you on progesterone supplements? The vaginal type can cause spotting too.

    FX for the best!

  • Warning: Pg loss mentioned.

Yes, I read that doubling time slows down to 2-3 days for hCG between 1,200 to 6,000 (and more afterwards), a minimum 50% increase each 3 days. I calculate your doubling time (from ~3,000 to ~6,000) as 7 days. I'm no doctor, but based on my experience, I would prepare for the worst and hope for the best. My ectopic pg had slow doubling (typical for ectopic), even so it was 4 days in that range. After 6,000 my 4-day increase was a mere 50% (then I received medicinal treatment).

Sorry you are in beta hell. Hoping for the best!

  • I know that betas slow down afet they hit around 1000. That is high for a first beta from my experience, but I always had my first betas around 4 weeks so that is probably why I am used to seeing lower numbers. My RE didn't do ultra sounds before 7 weeks. Any update @pupluv0410 ? Hoping for the best for you!
