Why now?

Woke up this morning and found out that someone had broken into our car last night. They took my husbands wallet and a few other things. Now we have to try to get his ID back without using other ID since it was all in his wallet. I'm very much hoping he won't need anything when we go to the hospital to deliver. I'm not sure why he would, but you never know. Sometimes they need photo ID to let you visit someone. They took his tap-enabled debit card, so they have access to our bank account. As well as his credit cards. They now have enough to steal his identity as well. I just want to sit down and cry right now. You never expect something like this to happen to you, and when it does its at the worst times. I'm just thankful they didn't steal our car, it's the only one we have.

  • Have him freeze his credit ASAP which you can do online with all 3 major credit bureaus and then contact all the credit card companies and banks and let them know and they'll reissue new cards with new accounts. People have this happen and there are steps in place to get everything back. It's a lot of hassle and I hope it gets sorted out soon.

  • I agree with PPs! Freeze EVERYTHING! My husband was robbed a couple of years ago in front of our house by a teenage girl(& 2 hidden conspirators) while she pretended to need directions. We filed a police report immediately and the officer actually helped us call the bank and credit card companies.
  • Alrighty so you need to back off the poor me and put on your tough girl panties. Call and cancel his bank cards and credit cards and then look into the ID situation. Most of the time you can get new IDs with a birth certificate or a social security card.
  • He doesn't have a copy of his BC and they don't give physical copies of Social Insurance Numbers anymore. He has literally no piece of ID. Everything else we're dealing with already. And this isn't a poor me post, it's an I need to vent a bit about this post.
  • Are you scheduled to deliver soon? Im not sure how it works where you are, but my SO only needed his ID to sign the Birth certificate.

As PP said cancel the cards and check online about whats needed to replace the ID. Good luck!

But when he goes to get a new ID, they should be able to look up his old ID and picture to verify it is him. Call and ask what you do in this situation, I am sure he isn't the first one itvhas happened to,
  • Yep, that's a pain in the butt for sure. Like PPs have said, freeze everything. Everything is replaceable, just time consuming.

I don't know where you got your info about Social Security not giving physical copies anymore, but it's flat out untrue. He goes to the SS office to request a duplicate card.

Here in Washington State you can still get a new card, but they DO NOT mail it to you for obvious reasons. Down side is you better not loose it more than once because they only replace it a few times before you can't get it anymore

They also might not live in the US. But yes here, you can still get them and they are pretty easy to get, just annoying to have to go somewhere to request it during business hours.
  • I remember replacing my birth certificate via the vital statistics website a few years ago. I didn't have to send in any documentation.

This may be stating the obvious but when he does get everything replaced, I would HIGHLY recommend that he not keep his Social Security card in his wallet. There is never going to be an everyday instance where you need to present that kind of document. Therefore it should be kept in a safe place at home.
  • @mamaloaf we live in Canada. Different stuff.
  • Process has been started for new ID, they just want a physical copy of the police report. Cards are frozen, and everything else can wait.
  • I didn't realize you are Canadian @akumatora . What province are you in?
  • I know it's not helpful now but for the future it may be a good idea to invest in a small safe to keep important documents and copies of everything so you always have some kind of back up.
Hope everything gets worked out soon and you don't have too many hoops to jump through!
  • Who keeps their wallet in the car?

I'm also in Canada. This is the info you need to get him a 'confimartion of SIN' (since they don't issue the cards anymore)

To apply for your Social Insurance Number (SIN), to obtain a confirmation of your SIN, or to amend your SIN record, simply gather all the required original proof of identity documents and take them to the nearest Service Canada point of service.
Last time I went to Service Canada it was super fast.

He'll probably have to get a new birth certificate to do that but I had to recently do that as well and it really was nbd.

If you're worried about identity theft you call these people:
    1. 1-888-495-8501. The national anti-fraud call centre is jointly managed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Ontario Provincial Police and Competition Bureau Canada. They provide advice and assistance about identity theft.

This. We have a fireproof box we keep important documents in. We even have an external hard drive in it with ALL of our pictures we have taken over the years in it, that way if the house were to ever burn down it wouldnt be hard to still have our precious memories saved!!
  • @JaclynnFisher will they do stuff from Alberta too?
  • @akumatora - yep they do. It just happens that OPP are involved. It's nationwide.

If you go to the Service Canada website there is a lot of helpful info.
