Stubborn stomach sleeper!

My LO is just over five weeks old and HATES sleeping on his back. He used to be okay with it, but lately will not sleep for any period of time unless I put him on his stomach! He can turn his head back and forth, and lifts it very well, but I'm constantly told it's dangerous for him to sleep that way! I just don't know what to do, since that's the only way he will sleep for any length of time! Or if I'm maybe being too paranoid about this and I need to let him sleep however he does it best? Any advice or anyone who has been going through something similar?

Re: Stubborn stomach sleeper!

  • Have you tried something like a rock n play? My guy hates lying on his back in the crib but he doesn't mind the incline of the RnP. I've only let him sleep on his stomach once for a nap. I'd be too paranoid!

  • He won't sleep in the Rock and play either!

My babe doesn't like his back either. He was fine in the hospital and the first week or so home. Now he will only sleep for about 10 minutes on his back and will wake up screaming. Put him on his belly and he's out like a light and for hours (I am a belly sleeper myself) I got one of the video monitors, his bassinet is in the corner of the living room which is in my bedroom doorway basically, I wanted him used to all the noise, which he has done great with but anyways. That helps sooth my worries a bit haha. I'm constantly checking it tho. Since he was born he's had great neck control and moves it from side to side no problems and most of the time if he's tired enough he doesn't even move. He is a month old today. I'm surprised how any of us have survived with how they have changed everything in the years.
  • Makes me feel way better @kaycorey89 ! I keep blankets and all out of his pack and play and keep his head to the side, plus he sleeps in my room and I have a video monitor, I just keep getting told I'm doing it wrong, but that's how he sleeps! I'm the same way, love sleeping on my stomach, am finally getting back to it after being pregnant lol
  • My little guy has been sleeping on his belly since we put him in his crib at 2.5 weeks. He's 2 months old now. He has great neck control and I don't worry about him during the night anymore. We have a movement monitor that would sense if he stopped breathing. He only sleeps on his back for a few minutes then his arms wake him up. On his belly he learned to self soothe and get comfy if he wakes up. He usually gives me a 6-8 hour stretch of sleep at night, nurses, then another 2-3 hour stretch of sleep. Usually. Lol

When I was little belly sleeping was the norm... I think if babe sleeps best that way you should let them sleep.

I also read that babies who sleep on their bellies learn to crawl faster because it's essentially tummy time every day :)

Good luck mama. Try not to let other people's opinions bring you down!

Honestly we were all probably belly sleepers...not saying dont listen to experts but this changes back and forth often.
  • My MIL put all 4 of her kids on their bellies and they turned out fine. There's so much conflicting information out there! I freaked out the other day because my boy loves sleeping on people on his tummy. I thought I was crushing his lungs but my husband said the reason they don't put babies on their bellies is cuz if they spit up or vomit they could suffocate on it vs on their backs they swallow it or they turn their heads. It sounds like your baby has good head control and as long as you are monitoring it or he is rooming in then I wouldn't get too worked up!
  • My LO was exactly the same, he would only sleep in his back for about 10 mins. The most I got out of him was 30 mins. For our own sanity we tried him on his stomach and he sleeps like a dream! Now he gives me 2 five hour stretches at night. He's been stomach sleeping since a week old. I was paranoid too at first, now I'm not. I hate when I'm reading a parenting book and it says "whatever you do do t put your baby to sleep on their stomach"; it makes me so mad. The risk of sids on the stomach vs their back is only slightly more. They don't know what causes sids and they are guessing based on previous cases. Do what you think feels right and do what is best for your family. I will never feel guilty about letting DS sleep on his belly, he needs his sleep as much as I do!
  • I feel so much better after hearing from other moms who had the same experience with their LO, @hollybear4 - even my cousin had the same experience with her older daughter...clearly she's fine, she's eight lol. I got read the riot act by the doctor but I'm not gonna force him to sleep on his back! His startle reflex will constantly wake him up, and I know he needs his sleep!
  • @rachelarynxo I'm so sorry your doctor read you the riot act, that's ridiculous. My midwife told me to do what is right for us, she even told us that her twins slept on their stomachs so not all healthcare providers are single minded!
