I had my first OB visit today, which my husband and I were both so excited for. I'll be 9 weeks pregnant tomorrow, and found out in the early part of June, but I had to wait a few weeks to be seen by the doctor for my first visit until my health insurance kicked in. My visit today was with a nurse practitioner.
First off, all they did at the appointment today was have me pee in a cup to confirm the pregnancy. They also did a pap smear since I was due for one. That's it. They want me to come back next week for an ultrasound, and said they would call us later with the results of the ultrasound (WTF - I don't even get the results right then and there? Is that usual?). They'll also do some bloodwork that day.
And finally, the first available appointment slot that my actual OB had open wasn't until August 2nd, which will be what they called my "initial OB visit" - my educational visit, with me being able to ask questions, get information, education, and the like. By then I'll be days away from being in my second trimester - it seems silly to wait that long to actually meet my OB and be able to ask her questions!
I don't know, the visit just left me with a bad taste in my mouth. It seems like there's so many hoops to jump through and different visits to come back for. This is a VERY busy OBGYN practice at one of the busiest hospitals in my city (St. Louis) - it's literally known as "the baby factory" of my city. Which to some might be a bonus, but I wanted a more personalized experience. Not just seen as another "number".
One of my coworkers recommended her OB to me, and I called their office today after my disappointing visit. I was immediately impressed with them - they were able to get me in as early as July 16th with the actual OB, for an ultrasound, labwork, and educational/informational visit all in one - rather than having to split it up amongst visits like with my current OB. I've heard mostly good things about the hospital I would deliver at, it's a much smaller hospital and also closer to home for us.
I'm just confused now as to which OB/hospital to go with - and whether or not I should even be annoyed with my current OB. Does it sound like standard operating procedure for my prenatal care to be so spread out and divided? Or should I switch to a different OB? This is my first pregnancy, so I'm completely lost on what to do. Any advice would be so appreciated.

My first visit was at 9 weeks, too. My next visit is July 7th, four weeks after my first appoint. My visits will be four weeks apart until my third trimester, where they will then be two weeks apart until I deliver.
Definitely go somewhere else. That just doesn't seem right to me what you experienced.
Ps both OB offices did US during first visit.
The main difference is that my OB/CNM office has an ultrasound room & tech on staff.
The most likely reason they are scheduling you for a separate appointment is because they have to refer you to an ultrasound location. The tech at that location takes pictures (forewarning; you most likely won't get to see a thing & they won't make small talk) & sends them back to your OB to interpret.
They then call you to talk about it. It's not that they are withholding as much as confirming information twice (the tech interpretation & then doctor) before talking to you.
If you have questions about policies or procedures you can call the office & ask someone to explain them to you in detail. Don't worry about being a bother or anything. It's your duty to be empowered & knowledgable about your care. Even if the office seems annoyed-- you are within your rights to know exactly how things go (within reason of course).
Often FTM are meek & afraid to rock the boat. Don't be. It's better than being Uninformed & shocked/upset later.
This goes for a doula, midwife, nurses & hospital staff. If you know your mind then they will know it too! Good luck.

Next visit will be good and that's what I'm waiting for!!
My initial visit was just peeing in a cup. My second appointment was the ultrasound and I knew the pregnancy was viable then. I had my blood drawn between appointments.
My third visit will be at 12.5 weeks.
