Babymoon ideas?

Even though it's early, DH and I are starting to think about Babymoon ideas for October / November time frame.  Do any Mommas have Babymoon recommendations?

Ideas we have floated:
Cruise from NYC -- pos: no flying, departs close to where we live, limited additional expenses (spa tab would be BIG though), suites are reasonable; neg: possible sea sickness, several day stretches at sea
Puerto Rico -- pos: part of US so easy in terms of healthcare and cell phones, gorgeous; neg: none come to mind except 3 hour flight but that seems fine

Obviously we wouldn't book till further along just in case things get complicated, and without consulting our Dr. first.

Would be great to hear about your experiences!

Re: Babymoon ideas?

  • We went to Hawaii last time. It was great.

This time, we're going to Austin in November for a wedding, which will probably be the closest thing to a "babymoon." And we just took DD on vacation in San Diego, so we did get in one vacation with one kid.

  • We went to New Orleans last time. This time I don't know that we will do anything specific. We were planning on driving home to see both sides of the family in October/November but I'm not so sure about that any more. It's a long drive (20 hours to his parents, 10 hours from there to mine, and then about 15 hours back). But these are small enough cities that flying isn't much more convenient. And would cost a lot more having to buy 3 tickets now that ds will be 2.
  • ahh @magnumj Hawaii sounds amazing -- I will have to price it out just for fun!

We went to Bora Bora a few months ago, so I doubt I will be able to sell DH on another trip that direction.  How far along were you?  The flight time was OK?

I was about 7 months. It's about a 5 hour flight time. I wore compression socks and made sure to get plenty of water and to walk around. It was long but fine :)

My husband and I are talking about the same thing! We are most likely taking a cruise out of NYC as well, but in September. Keep in mind that most cruise ships don't allow pregnant women over 6 months on board and if you are pregnant you need a doctor's note saying how far along you are and that it's safe to travel. I've heard of women that were 8 weeks pregnant getting denied on board the ship because they didn't have a note.

I also didn't even think about the sea sickness thing. I'm sure our bodies have the potential to react differently on a boat while pregnant. I'll have to keep this in mind as we decide as well!

We are leaning towards Hawaii (Turtle Bay Resort)!
  • Last time we went "up north" here Michigan. We went for a wedding and stretched it out an extra day or two. This time around our babymoon will be in Disney World. It was a trip that we planned to take with DS this summer before we even got pregnant. Really looking forward to one last trip as the three of us before baby comes and can't wait to see the magic on DS's face when he meets Mickey Mouse for the first time.

If we had it in the budget, DH and I would go somewhere else tropical by ourselves---but I'd rather spend the money to do something fun with DS one last time before he is no longer the only child.

We're headed to Bali for DH's brother's wedding the beginning of August, I'll be 11 weeks then. Not really a babymoon, but it's BEAUTIFUL over there!! We may also announce our pregnancy there as well. I really wanted to ride an elephant too! :(

Not sure if we will go yet. We should do something though

Haha I am always all over the ghost tours, too!  We love doing local ones every few months.

  • My sister is taking all 3 boys for the weekend at the end of July. DH and I both took Friday off so we will get a local hotel room and go do stuff in the area since there isn't much time to travel anywhere. So far we have planned to sleep in (yay!), go to a baseball game, eat yummy food at our fav no kid restaurant and maybe go to the zoo. We go to the zoo a lot with the boys but I want to actually go and see the bird show and the keeper talks that my toddlers have no patience for. Not very exotic but I'm excited.
  • We are going on an anniversary trip/Babymoon in September to an all inclusive resort in cancun for 4 days/3 nights. I'm really excited, but terrified to leave my dd who will be about 13 months old then.
  • We had a vacation planned before we found out about the pregnancy. Officially the worst "babymoon" ever- wine country! Ugh. I'm sure Napa will be beautiful but I sure wish we weren't going when I can't drink! Oh well. Extra time at the spa. :)
  • @pbtoast Ha!  We were in a similar situation -- had a trip booked late November to Spain.  Luckily I have status and was able to get a refund!  Napa is so beautiful, you will have a great time.  Lots of spa treatments!

  • We went on a cruise last time. I wanted to be able to do something laid back that we could do as much or as little as we wanted, depending on how I felt. Plus, I mean , food.. It's everywhere ;)

Anyone considering a cruise, keep in mind the restrictions in pregnancy. If I remember right, most ships won't let you go past 24w.

We likely won't be doing anything fun this time.

At the risk of sounding dumb, what's the farthest along you can be and still fly safely?
I've been talking to my hubby about doing a baby moon after Christmas/over New Years for our 3 year wedding anniversary baby moon combo but he keeps saying we'll have to drive somewhere bc I won't be able to fly.

Depends on how far the trip is, the airline, your pregnancy and your doctor.

Eek! I didn't even know this was a thing. You all have given me a new reason to celebrate - bring on the babymoon! My DH will call me crazy, but I am kind of spoiled right now sooooo hopefully I can get him to agree on a trip!

We have a free hotel stay in a coastal town... will probably go as an extension of Christmas since university us closed and IL can watch our furbaby (who just ate the leftovers of my dinner.. my fault for leaving them on the coffee table)

  • I love Puerto Rico.  My DH works in Dorado several times a year, so we have gone down a handful of times.  I love Old San Juan, El Junque, the Bio Bay, snorkeling, and we have taken a little plane to the island of Culebra, which is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world apparently.  We have always stayed at the Dorado Del Mar Embassy Suites, which has a really nice pool area and a pretty beach (that has sharp coral if you actually want to swim/wade, if I remember right).  I really liked that help, but the last time I went was about 3 years ago.  My husband has said that the hotel had gotten much more run-down, but that they were also in the process of completely renovating it.  They serve an AMAZING free cook to order breakfast and free appetizers with two free drinks in the evening.  I really hope to go back someday soon after the renovations:)

It's different by doctor and by pregnancy circumstances.  I flew during my second pregnancy the day before I turned 36 weeks, and my doc was fine with it.  The farther along you get, the more and more uncomfortable it is! And the more you have to get up and move to get your blood pumping to prevent DVTs.

Thanks for the tips!  We went last month and fell in love with the place (which is why we are considering going back 5 months later haha)!  We stayed in Old San Juan at El Convento which was incredible.  If we go back, we will probably split time between El Convento and a beach resort.

  • Babymoon...I've definitely heard of it, but I would just be so concerned about spending money on travel that close to the birth.  Seems like a huge waste to me.  Probably being too stingy here, but I feel like if my DH can take a day and get me a massage and a mani pedi, and treat me to a steak dinner, I'll be good without leaving town.  Plus, I'm going to look like crap in a swim suit and I won't be able to drink, so vacation sounds like less fun.  But kuddos to everyone taking the splurge!

  • We never did anything like this. I mean, before my first I ended up on a trip to Ohio to visit some family, but DH stayed home. And before we started trying for our second we vacationed to VA Beach with all my in-laws. I guess you could make that seem like a babymoon. Best thing for me was with my second DH booked me a prenatal massage. I would trade *nearly any trip for one of those ever month!

Last pregnancy, we had no kids yet, so we did a Caribbean cruise towards the end of the first trimester. It was actually something we had booked prior to getting pregnant. The first trimester was a terrible time to vacation. I felt sick the whole time.

This time, since we have a toddler at home, we're going to try to plan our very first weekend away from our son and go a few hours away to a bed and breakfast up in the white mountains of New Hampshire where we used to like to go before we had kids.
  • We're going to Chicago in August when I'm about 14 weeks along- I figure I'll be able to move around and it won't be too bad. We live in Southern California so we'll be heading to Cabo in October. My friends who have gone on baby moons have suggested quick flights. Cabo is 2.5 hours, I plan to plop my toosh on the beach and do nothing but eat and relax. I'd suggest anywhere within 3 hours so you're not uncomfortable.

For one, it's harder than you think to swim face down while pregnant (but not impossible). Also, a lot of places (in Hawaii at least) don't allow pregnant women to snorkel for liability reasons.
