Re: Breastfeeding sucks (but it gets better) - A support thread

  • I thought I was past the worst when it came to engorgement, then all of a sudden today half my right breast is super engorged and tender. LO is draining it nicely right now but I wonder what brought this on all of a sudden.

  • Is anyone else's baby throwing up an entire feeding? My daughter is 10 days old now and starting at 5 days she has thrown up like every other day, an entire feeding. This is my second EBF baby, and my first spit up a lot but not throwing up everything. She was back to her original birth weight this week at her appointment (9 lbs 8.5 oz) but that afternoon was her first throw up. She is still having plenty of wet and dirty diapers, so I'm not concerned she isn't getting enough. And I can't put together a connection of something I'm eating on the days she throws up.

My LO also just started throwing up. He's 12 days old today and the past 2 days he seems to have gas pains and an occasional projectile vomit. I'm not too sure what brought this on either. He's gaining weight, but the gas pains make him unconfortable. Tried gas drops, with minimal relief. And have changed our bf positioning. Hoping this is just a phase.

Another question I have, anyone else have LO's that are developing lip blisters from bf'ing? I haven't seen anyone else mention this yet.
  • Are there any STMs here who have dealt with oversupply/foremilk-hind milk imbalance. I'm pretty sure this is why LO has been quite fussy and gassy lately. Any advice is appreciated.

Yes on the lip blisters! Thought it was from the nipple shield because it seems worse when he nurses on that side. One blister already fell off (he didn't mind it) but now a new one is forming.

Glad we are not alone over here :) my little guy's are white looking after bf'ing and on both the top and bottom lips. He really does have a strong suck.

I have wondered this as well. My left breast seems to really get full fast, and when he nurses on that side my milk just flows out. He sometimes chokes on it as it's going down. I am thinking i need to express a little before he latches. And maybe that would help with the fore milk hind milk issue, if that's what we are having. Anyone invest in a manual pump? I just have an electric pump now, and it's seems like it would be such a hassle to set up the pump before each feeding from that side.

Ditto on my guy. Thanks for allaying my concern! DH said he looked it up and it's common...
  • Our LO has the same problem with sucking blisters. He's never acted like it bothers him.

I remember with my first my lactation consultant told me that's a great sign that they are latched correctly, it is supposed to happen.

Thanks for the help, y'all. We ended up giving him about an hour and half with the pacifier then trying various bfing positions and tricks for about another hour and half. He was still being so fussy. You could tell he was so tired he couldn't sleep. Then all of a sudden, bam! He attached to the boob and fell right asleep. He hadn't slept hardly at all, all day yesterday. So instead of trying to get him to finish I just let him sleep for a little, boob fell out of his mouth, but he stayed asleep. Stayed like that for an hour until I had to get up to pee, but after that we had two good 'feeds' followed by sleep. He's fussing a little again this morning, but at least he is on the boob right now without constantly having to relatch every minute. Hopefully we broke the pattern last night.

Thanks so much for helping me not feel guilty about using the pacifier for a break.

Just from my experience, my children can sense my anxiety, stress, and tension. If I'm getting anxious with a feeding and my LO isn't eating well or is fussy, it helps us if I just take a few deep breaths and remind myself to calm down. As soon as I'm in a calmer state of mind, she calms down. I've noticed with LO number three everything is a lot easier than with number one and I wish I would've known this before. Good Luck @mellymar!! We are all sleep deprived and if a paci helps you, great!!
  • Thanks @SammeMotley and everyone else who helped me out yesterday. Today is going much better. I don't mind giving him boob to suck for comfort, but yesterday he wouldn't take that at all. He's back to accepting boob as a mollifying agent. And is way more content overall this afternoon than this time yesterday.

  • My daughter is 10 days old and also throwing up. It's happened 3 times in the last 2 days. Not really sure why, we're going to try to burp her more and not lay her down on her back right away.

Hm, that's the same time my kid went through it. He's three weeks now and we haven't had that problem in the past several days. Coincidence or a developmental thing they go through? Or maybe we parents just learn to manage it better? Dunno. Hope yours stops, too!

My LO chokes on my milk from time to time too, and I sometimes have to hand express off a bit of milk before he can latch. I've also noticed his poos are becoming watery and green which apparently is likely due to too much foremilk. I bought a manual pump yesterday - not because of this issue, but so that I can have a bit more freedom and DH can take a feed now and then. I've tried it out and it works well (2oz in 5 mins) but I'm reluctant to use it as it may stimulate further oversupply. The most common advice I've come across is not to switch sides during a feeding, but I haven't been doing that anyway so it's not helpful. I'm going to try block feeding - feeding from the same side 2-3 times in a row - and see if that makes a difference. Might be a bit lopsided temporarily though!
  • @caitlincunn check out this thread - lots of us are dealing with the spit up/puking issue you asked about! Good you're checking with the doctor, but seems pretty normal in this crowd. Let us know what the doc says!

Lip blisters are really common.. No need to worry or treat them

  • I can't tell if my left breast is just engorged or if I have a clogged duct. I've tried all of the remedies on Kelly Mom (warm compress, massage, more frequent pumping) to no avail. Anyone have any other advice that worked for them? I can't even breastfeed in this state - have been pumping all day/night and bottle feeding.

Call Dr. ASAP if you think it could be mastitis! Especially if you say you can't even nurse in that state!
  • @aliciaspinnet I had read that green poo could mean that your eating something not agreeing with him too. Just an idea since you seem to be producing plenty.
  • Waiting to hear back from the dr. Something is definitely not right. Ugh! And everything was going so well...
  • @ElRuby spoke to my dr and going in tomorrow to make sure everything is ok. No fever so hoping it's just clogged duct.
  • Has anyone had experience with switching over to formula exclusively? We're adding more formula feedings through the day and my boobs are taking it well. But I'm so afraid I'll become engorged horribly or worse. I think with slowly adding more I'll be ok but I'm wondering how long it'll take to dry up and what to help with that once we are fully to formula
  • @katyertl I switched about two weeks ago and still have small signs of milk on one side. Other than pumping less and less and spreading those sessions out more and more one thing that helps is to take Sudafed to dry the milk up. The decongestant helps lessen the supply so if you want to stop completely, that is one thing that can help accelerate drying up.

Ok!!! Awesome! Thanks! Yeah I'm down to just BF during the 4 night feedings and one morning. She loves the bottle and formula so I'm really happy about that. But she is getting gassy and frustrated so I'm hoping that once her stomach gets used to the formula it'll get better. Idk when I'll make the switch to exclusively formula for good but it'll be in the next month. So do you start the sudafed when you do what to be done completely? And how long does that take? Am I gonna be doped up on that for a few weeks lol

@katyertl Yes, I would wait until you're completely ready to be done to take the Sudafed because it really drops the supply. I bought a box of 12 hour non-drowsy Target brand and have taken it for about two weeks. Toward the end I haven't been as timely about it so I've had a few days where I've only taken it once. I think I have one left. It's worked pretty well though and the past week I haven't had to pump at all and don't feel engorged. In fact, my porn star boobs are back to their normal selves!

Yes! I was thinking about buying a thing of cAbbage! Does that help with the pain or the supply?
  • For those of us using breast shields, do you have a game plan on how/when to ween off them? I know I need to make another LC appointment to see what she thinks but am curious...
  • @aliciaspinnet Be careful with the block feeding. I really over thought breastfeeding first time around, read about the fore/hind milk imbalance and got all worried about it. I block feed and it lead to mastitis. Then antibiotics lead to thrush. Repeated mastitis killed my oversupply. I think worrying about the hind milk situation was the start of all my problems. Maybe talk to a LC before you do anything. In retrospect the green poop was either a dairy sensitivity or something I shouldn't have researched. My two cents. Just don't want you to get mastitis. It's hellish.

I do use the same boob twice if LO is snacking but in try to make sure each side is nursed on at least every 3 hours. So I might offer the right 3 times because LO is nursing every 30 minutes but after after that I switch. If he takes a break for an hour or two the left still gets drained within my time limit.

I just use mine or not, as needed. LO has no issues with it, or any confusion that I only used it on one side.

I have to use one on both sides for flat nipples. I have an appointment Friday with an LC, but I do think it's affecting my supply. The LC in the hospital gave me the wrong size shield and insisted I use it. LO was constantly hungry so I started pumping and feeding from a bottle. At her two week checkup she was only 5/15 from 6/2 at discharge. She has to gain 11 oz by Friday. I think with the smaller shield I'm trying, she's getting more at each feeding and I'm praying it hasn't had a permanent effect on my milk. But now I'm gun shy when asking for help. I had to research on my own about this shield and discovered she didn't even tell me the correct way to use it. At this point, I don't think I can feed without it.

This is me right now. My guy has a habit of using the boob as a pacifier. Which, honestly, my chapped nips situation has maintained itself at a place where I don't mind giving him the boob for comfort so its not that big of a deal, but he tends to fall asleep on the boob, so I'm worried that he won't feed long enough often enough to get the good stuff. Trying to not stress about it, and just tucking the idea into my mind for discussion at his appt tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up on this. I'll definitely be on the watch out for early signs of mastitis and blocked ducts. I think I see some signs of improvement at the moment but if I don't see continuing improvement then I'll go back to alternating sides. I'm really hoping I don't need to cut dairy! I have read that green poop could be due to iron supplements which I'm taking so that could be contributing too.

Good lord, when was her last weigh in?  Basically, an oz a day with breastfeeding is the 'high end' gain if everything is going perfectly, my LC/OB said.  So, if it hasn't been 11 days since the last weigh in, don't panic if lo hasn't gained that much.

Last Thursday. I'm determined not to supplement with formula if I can help it. It's more of a control issue for me. Ehh but it happens I guess.
