That was something said in the older days! They used different chemicals & such then. now it has no effect on you or your baby other than changing your hair color! I'm a cosmetologist & have colored many pregnant people's hair & will still be doing mine once I get a BFP!
It's safe. The only people who really need to be concerned are hair stylists who work with it all day, every day - and even then, there's only a very slight increase in concern. The advice of avoiding hair dyes is antiquated and based on dyes from decades ago that contained nasty chemicals.
Just don't take a bath in it or eat it. I got my hair colored religiously every 5-6 weeks with my first, and he turned out perfect. I plan to do the same this go 'round.
One concern is fumes but I think any decent salon these days is well ventilated and conscious of this. When I get highlights I've never smelled a thing. I've heard to wait until 2nd tri but I have an appt at 11 weeks. It will be fine.
I too am I hair dresser, I say wait the first 12 weeks, it was hard for me but I did. We do have more natural based hair colors, but they still have necessary chemicals needed to lift the hair shaft. Your skin is a barrier, but it's a porous barrier. With everything growing and forming in the first tri, I think it's best to wait.

I want to re-dye my hair, too. But I'm waiting for a few weeks. I'm too tired to do much of anything RN anyways.
