Question for more "baby educated" moms

Let me start by saying my doctor is the absolute worst when it comes to explaining things to me. This is my first pregnancy and early on he mentioned that I might have some sort of problem with my cervix getting short too fast. He never said anything else about it. I'm now 31+5 and while out of town visiting family, my mucus plug came out. I went to the ER. They did an US and said my cervix looked funneled and was only at a 2.1. They gave me steroid shots to help develop her lungs and told me to follow up with my OB when I got home. After I got home I called my office to make an appointment and he didn't seem concerned. Now I keep having cramps and for the past two days I've been having a clear fluid leak. Should I be concerned?

Re: Question for more "baby educated" moms

  • Yes, I'd be. If your Ob is being that way then go to ER.

  • I would be. If the fluid your leaking doesn't stop when you "hold in your pee" then you need to call immediately.
  • I'd be concerned enough to seek a second opinion, either another doc or a trip to L&D. Mucous plug means nothing, absolutely nothing. It can be "lost" at any time and regenerate itself. The concerning part would be the short-ish cervix with funneling. Did you get two steroid shots?
  • It doesn't have any sort of color or odor either. When I stand up it kind of pours out. I was under the assumption that it isn't my water breaking because it's been two days...I don't want to seem all crazy and ridiculous for going to the ER, especially if the fluid is just normal pregnancy discharge.
  • Yes. I ended up staying in town an extra night so I could get the second shot the next morning.
  • Do any of you know how long my cervix should be at 31 weeks? And does the clear fluid sound like my water breaking or does it just sound like normal discharge?

You won't know unless you go. You don't want to feel guilty later if something bad happend just because you don't want to be the ridiculous pregnant lady.
  • I agree with @breezymeema7 the mucus plug isn't concerning but the slow leak of fluid should definitely be checked. Good luck!
  • That's what concerns me...his complete lack of concern for my baby. I've been home almost a week...I called the day I got back and he didn't schedule me for an appointment until this coming Monday :/

  • I understand that none of you are doctors. I would never make a huge medical decision just because someone on here told me to. If someone told me to use kitchen tongs, reach up, and pull her out, I wouldn't. I was simply asking if anyone knew anything about fluid leaks and cervical shortening. I was just asking in hopes that someone else had experienced similar situations and could maybe explain weather or not going to the ER seemed irrational.
  • I'm confused, your OB isn't concerned you are leaking fluids or you haven't called in the past 2 days to tell them of that new symptom? My OB asks me if I've noticed any leaking fluids every single visit. It's important, because if you are leaking amniotic fluid you are at higher risk of infection, which puts you and baby at risk. Please go be seen. It's a simple test to find out what the fluid is.

I can't speak on a shortened cervix. But your OB seems ridiculous to me. I was wondering if I was having a slow leak with DS and didn't say anything for almost a week because I was waiting till my regular appointment. They checked the fluid (just a strip test) and it ended up being nothing. The doctor was still mad at me saying that if it had been it could have turned into infection by then. And he instructed me to call if I'm ever not sure.

It concerns me that your OB isn't doing the same.

  • Seems like your water broke ? I could be wrong though...You should really go to the ER.

I get what you're saying. I'm not attacking your question, but opinions here can vary and you'd be surprised what people choose to let go because of Internet strangers opinions. I hope everything works out for you.
  • Cervix shorter than 2.5 is concerning. Usually you are placed on bed rest at that point. You need to get the fluid checked out because your baby is at high risk of major infection if you wait too long.

  • My husband worked at a few er's. You'd be amazed what people go in for. I'm sure you would be no where near the weirdest thing they've seen that day. Better safe than sorry.

We are not medical professionals so there is no way we can answer any of the above questions, sorry. As I already stated, it's probably best to go and get checked. I understand not wanting to be "that lady" who goes to the ER for any knick, bump, or bruise but honestly wouldn't you rather be "that lady" instead of possibly risking your baby's life??? Go, get off TB, and get checked.
  • Sounds like your water broke. That's how mine was with my DS. A leak that would happen when I'd stand or move a certain way. Go get checked. Could be excess discharge, but better to be safe than sorry.
  • Trust me, they will not think you're crazy. Your water breaking can put your baby's life at risk. And it's really a simple swab test to check. I got checked last pregnancy at 24 weeks and didn't want to go in at all, but I'm glad I did. Because I went in, my sister went in when she had similar symptoms and her water did break at 24 weeks. If she had ignored it for days she may not have kept him in for 6 more weeks. Please go get it checked.

I'm late so hopefully you're already in labor and delivery getting checked out. Many TnP's for you and baby!

This 1000X...I was thinking the same thing when I read it. The original post sounds like the only issues at first were your mucus plug fell out and your cervix was only 2.1 long. My Dr at 16 weeks checked my length and said she wanted 2.5 or longer, so 2.1 doesn't seem insanely short to me this late in the game (but I am not Dr), BUT I did not get the impression that your OB knew about the leaking that has started to occur. That may change how concerned they are tremendously, if they don't already have that info, you may want to share it with them!!!! That is a game changer.
  • I'm at risk for a incompetent cervix but please go get checked out. I know it'll sound gross but does the fluid have a smell? Pee, obviously, will smell like ammonia. Amniotic fluid smells more "earthy" and medicinal (at least it did to me!) and kinda sweet. Definitely not ammonia smelling. But I'd still get checked. It's easy and quick, and if something else is going on they can provide you answers. I lost all my fluid in huge gushes, but it started as a slow thing.
It can also go on for a few days as a slow leak.

You can google what your cervical length should be :) I know one of my last ones was like 3.46 or 3.64 can't remember but that was at 24 weeks .
  • I hope you got checked out, if all the fluid leaks out you could have a dry birth and your baby is at risk
