My OB/GYN Doctor might not be delivering my baby

I'm 38W+ and just found out today at my checkup that my doctor will be out all next week and won't return until the week after on July 7th- which just happens to be my exact due date! When the receptionist told me this and scheduled me to see someone else, I was freaking out! I want to cry. I'm scared who ever is his on call doctor won't know anything about me! Especially since I'm supposed to get antibiotics upon arriving to hospital for GBS and now I'm hoping I'll make it to my due date (wishful thinking) I dont want to go in labor with a different doctor delivering my baby :( anyone else going through this? How did it go for you?

  • I also just get whoever is on call at the hospital. Maybe it's one of the docs I've seen before, maybe not. As long as there's an MD behind their name I don't really care. And as for GBS, they'll have your records there and you'll be fine.

In Israel, your obgyn never comes to the delivery. All the delivery rooms are staffed by midwives and a few doctors who are around for the more difficult births. So here you never know who is going to deliver your baby, and it works out just fine :) whoever is on call will have access to your chart and make sure you get antibiotics for gbs. Good luck!
  • Mine will be out too. There's about 5 docs in the practice and they make you meet all of them throughout the pregnancy just in case this happens. I want him to deliver my baby but at the end, I don't care who it is as long as I have a safe delivery. Don't stress too much about it. Whoever delivers your LO will have your medical history and will know what to do.
  • It's typical that you only see the on call dr during delivery. The dr isn't there for your whole labor anyway. On avg you will only see them when you are getting ready to push.

  • This is very common. Unless you have a scheduled induction or CS, you get whoever the on call doc is when you go into labor. Even of your doc wasn't out of town, the odds that they will be on call that day are slim. My docs office has 6 docs so I don't know who it will be. With my DD, I had a doc I had never met before but had no issues. As others have said, you pretty much don't see them until you're ready to push anyway and by then, odds are you won't care who is at the end of the bed. Good luck, you'll be fine.
  • I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure I also will get whatever doctor is on-call during delivery time. My doctor always tells me what days she's on call at my appointments and jokingly tells me to have the baby on those days. lol

Honestly, I don't care who "delivers" the baby. They are all professional and have the same credentials. I'm more for hoping I get some awesome nurses since that's who I'm going to be seeing the most anyway during all of this.

Midwifery led care is the standard in the UK too with obstetric involvement in only high risk cases, however we do not pay nearly as much for our care as you do in US thanks to our NHS. Try not to worry- I'm sure your doctor will ensure all important information (such as need for antibiotics) is handed over to the on call doctor who is covering x
  • My assigned dr wasn't who delivered my son. My dr was there when I came in but the shift changed and got another doc. It wasn't what I wanted but she was exactly who I needed. She knew exactly what to do when things went crazy at the end. I am now great ful that she was there. And I actually prefer to see her during my visits now.
  • Im on the same boat my ob/gyn is on vaca till july 6th im due july 2nd and im freaking out because his covering doctor was originally my doctor but i had to file a formal complaint about his very rude dismissive unproffesional practice. To think he may be the one to deliver my baby has me beyond stressed.
  • Thank you ladies, I hope I won't care as much when the time comes. These last few weeks have been stressful for me and then I get this news dropped on me so I just need to relax^^ Lol
  • Oh I'm so sorry that would have me over the edge as well. I would try to see what other doctors are on call and perhaps mention this to them? I've had experiences with rude doctors before that were completely insensitive. I guess that's why I worry so much.
  • This kind of confuses me. Have you only seen one doctor at your office the entire pregnancy? At my office, we rotate through all the doctors, so we know whoever is on call during our delivery.

Yes, I've only seen one doctor at my clinic so far. I do know there's more, but I've never met any of them. Next week I'll be seeing someone else, that is if I don't go into labor between now and then.
  • At our office that is fairly typical. Whoever is on call will be the one delivering our baby. It could be one of five nurse midwives. They encourage us to rotate around to try to see each of them at least once so we are at least familiar with most of them. We had one that we have seen for the bulk of the pregnancy, but we have met 4 of the 5. I'm not sure if we will schedule one with the 5th or not, just because she isn't on call as often so it is less likely that she will deliver us.
  • I haven't even met an OB yet - just had appointments with midwives. You spend more time with the nurses/midwives during the labor process anyway, the OB just comes in at the final moment and takes care of business. It doesn't really matter who's down there. You'll be fine!
  • I was joking with my doc about that today and she said most docs run at a 50% delivery rate for their own patients (including scheduled inductions and CS) so it's basically that, a 50/50 chance.
  • I am in the same boat as you. I'm due on Thursday and my doctor doesn't get back into town till Wednesday, she's been out of town since Tuesday. To top it off I've been losing a lot of my mucus plug these past two days and as much as I would love for my doc to deliver baby I am more excited to meet my baby than I am concerned about who will help me meet her. Its kinda scary to think you've built such a bond with your doc only to not be sure if she/he will be the one to guide you through delivery. I'm sure if the time comes you will be more concerned with meeting your precious bundle than who is delivering said bundle! Good luck to you though!!!

When I had DS the dr. on call delivered him emergency c section. He was awesome! He is actually my doctor this time around :).
  • My OB/GYN office has 4 doctors. In the last few weeks of pregnancy they have you meet/see them all since you don't know who will be on call when you go into labor. With DD, the only doctor I didn't like (thought he was cold, impersonal, etc.) was the one on call the night I went into labor. And honestly? He wound up being wonderful as a delivery room OB. He wasn't warm and fuzzy but he knew his stuff and he was patient.

With DS, again, it was another OB who was on call. And in my case, I hadn't met her yet (my appointment with her was supposed to be on my due date). I didn't know what to think because I'd heard she was strict (former military), all business, etc. But she was a wonderful advocate for me when the nurses were being pushy.

I hope one of the 2 deliver this baby, but I also know there are 2 other OBs who I won't meet (due to one being new this week and one being only for on-call, not appointments) who may do the delivering. In the end, the OB is really only there for such a little time of your labor.

  • My OB didn't deliver either of my boys. You get the On Call doctor. Like others have said, it's not that big of a deal. They are in the room for such a small amount of time (of things go smoothly).
  • I was wondering about the same thing n a lil freaked out about it but I want to deliver at a different hospital then where my Dr delivers?. Is that a bad thing to do?? :-/
  • My Dr's office did a meet the doctors thing at the hospital so we could meet each of them as well as the L&D nurses in case my particular OB was not on call at the time. Whoever is on call is who will be delivering

Ultimately, it's your choice but it's not recommended. If you deliver where your docs don't go, they won't have easy access to your medical records and prenatal care records. Being delivered by another doc in the same office isn't a big deal because they can still access everything, that isn't the case if you go to a different hospital and are seen by a completely different set of docs. My SIL is an OB and she comments often about how frustrating it is to have a pregnant woman come in to the hospital in labor and not have any clue about her prenatal care or medical history. It can really make a difference.

  • The only reason I want to deliver at a diff hospital is bc the hospital in the city I live in is horrible n not many ppl deliver there so I want to go to the best one that I know of. There was two here n they closed one of them. I'm so confused on what to do :/ n all my family is close to the one I want to deliver at n it will be easier for my mom to be there with me.

  • The on-call doctor delivered my baby on Thursday because my ob was on vacation. I'd never met him before, but he was amazing! I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
