Measuring behind?

I went for my first ultrasound Tuesday at what I thought was 7w2d based on my LMP. However, the midwife measured me at 5w6d. I did get to see a heartbeat of 111bpm but I can't help but worry as this is my first pregnancy. Is this good, bad, normal?

Dating based on your lmp can be off by quite a bit, unless you know exactly when you ovulated.

  • I honestly don't have a clue when I ovulated. We weren't trying for this baby and I wasn't really tracking ovulation or anything. I'm just trying not to worry about the 10 days off thing.
  • If you don't know when you ovulated, you probably ovulated late. Are they having you come in for a follow up U/S? The most important thing is that the baby grows as it's supposed to. If they haven't scheduled one and you're still worried, I'd push for one.

  • I had a similar experience and googled loads and it seems to be very common!
  • Well seeing that it's common makes me feel much better! :)
They did not schedule an ultrasound. I told my doctor that my cycles are usually 32-35 days and that my last period before pregnancy was 5 days late. Maybe this has something to do with it?
She didn't seem concerned at all and told me it was nothing to worry about. So I guess I should go with that. I am high risk and have a doctor appointment again on July 7 and July 22. Crossing my fingers and willing to bet that everything looks fine!
  • The fact that you had a strong heartbeat is a very good sign. I'd try not to worry ;)
  • If your cycles are 32-35 days you probably ovulate at cd18-21, they assume o on cd14; so you would measure 4-7 days earlier than where last lmp would put you
If your last cycle was 40 days (35 + 5 days late), you likely o'ed on cd26 - and would measure 12 days earlier than lmp.
Thus, measuring 10 days earlier than last lmp makes sense to me. Does that make sense?

  • Yes that makes lots of sense! I am feeling better about it. :) Thank you everyone!
  • @ashnewman1, the same thing happened to me yesterday at my first ultrasound. According to my LMP only, I should have been 8 weeks but I measured at 7 weeks exactly with a strong heartbeat. I ovulated on CD17/18 and the nurse told me she had absolutely no concerns. Implantation can vary quite a lot too, and can affect the dating process. So, I'm just keeping my fingers crossed until my next appointment on July 10th.

  • LMP really doesn't tell you anything, I have a longer cycle and didn't ovulate until CD28. You probably just ovulated late. Congrats on the heartbeat, I am not so patiently waiting my firs appointment.
Praying this is our take home baby. STICK TURKEY Mommy will miss you everyday my beautiful angel. We love you Lilypie Angel and Memorial tickers M/C on 1/05/11 at 11 weeks.
  • Had the same thing yesterday! I wS suppose to be 8wk 4 days and measured 7 wk 3 days... Glad to hear it's normal, just bummed to go back a week
  • I'm so glad to hear this is all normal and my thoughts and prayers are with you all awaiting your first appointments! I hate going back a week too, but it is just a week after all! I cannot wait to see progress at my next appointment on July 7! :)
