Baby Names

Looking for honest opinions on a name...

edited June 2015 in Baby Names
I've loved the name Olivia Sophia for years, but in the "someday I'll have kids sense".  Now that I'm actually considering names, and both Olivia and Sophia are at the top of the name charts in the US, I'm looking for something a little more unique.  Sure, the name doesn't define the person, but I also don't want her to be one of the handful or so children to look up questioningly every time a teacher says, "Olivia, [...]".

I'm leaning strongly toward the name Teagan Cyra. Mostly I'd like honest opinions about the name itself, but thoughts on the spelling are also appreciated.

Teagan (pronounced with the Irish pronunciation, TEE-gan) came about because I ran across the name several months ago, and it's the only name I've come across that's stuck in my brain that way.
Cyra (pronounced SY-rah) is the only feminine form of Cyrus I've come across, and Cyrus is a family name that has been passed down for several generations of boys in my family, popping up as both a first and a middle name.  I am looking for a way to balance my respect the root name with the femininity of my little girl.

EDIT:  If possible, can I get some insight into why you do or don't like the name? I know we won't all love or hate the same names (or we'd all have the same name!).  Is there some horrible playground nn I didn't consider? Is it too unfamiliar? Is the spelling not intuitive? etc...

  • I don't like Teagan Cyra. Olivia and Sophia are popular, but they are nice, classic names and far better than Teagan. I wouldn't pair Sophia with Olivia.

  • I never liked the name Teagan until a very good friend of mine named her sweet little girl that. So now, of course, I am partial toward it. It's a strong and lovely name that is not unusual but certainly not as popular as your original choice. I also really like Cyra, especially if it has real meaning for you.

As an aside, Teagan Cyra makes me think of Tegan and Sara, a musical duo (and sisters) who I LOVE.

  • I'm not a big fan of Teagan, just never lived the sound of it. Olivia and Sophia are popular, but much better names.
  • Teagan Cyra is not good at all.  Surname used on female is trend city.  Hearing Teagan Cyra doesn't scream femininity to me at all.

Olivia Sophia is popular but it's not trendy.  I would pick a popular name 1000 times over vs a trendy one.

If you are no longer sold on Olivia Sophia there are so many more great underused names.

  • Have you considered Livia?

  • I appreciate the suggestion, @bbiutmcph, but I don't know that I want to go with a variation on Olivia or Sophia. For me, it would feel like one step up from just changing the spelling to make a name more unique and would somehow feel like settling.
  • I don't like Teagan at all. Olivia and Sophia are both lovely and classic, that is why they are so popular.
  • I like Teagan! Sounds like a spunky little girl!
  • I really don't like Teagan. It just sounds kind of weak and juvenile to me if that makes any sense. I can't picture it on a successful grown up woman. I don't really like Cyra either.
  • I like Teagan but I'm not sure on Cyra... I also thought of Teagan and Sara.
  • I really don't care for Teagan or Cyra.
  • I knew two Teagans in high school/college -- both were boys.  Both were usually called Teague by their friends (teens have the ability to take just about any multi-syllable name and shorten it down to 1-syllable for convenience!)  To my ear it's a surname and a male name.  Olivia and Sophia are both classic and feminine -- Teagan isn't even in the same ballpark.  Also cannot see an educated adult woman named Teagan.  The name would lose its cuteness after about age 19.  I would use either Olivia and/or Sophia if you have loved them forever.  I doubt any other name will measure up for you.  Don't be so worried about popularity because those names are popular and classic, not popular and trendy.  I teach kdg. and have yet to have an Olivia or a Sophia in my classroom.

  • I am partial to Olivia because that's what I named my daughter. You could always have her go by Livvy, Ollie, etc. if you don't want her to be confused in Kindergarten :)

On the flip side, I went to high school with a girl named Teagan. She is now a grown a adult, obviously, and so it's not so hard to imagine a successful adult with that name- at least for me.

I think if Cyra has a special meaning for you and your family you should go for it.
  • stick with your original it is sooooo much better!!
  • Personally don't like Teagan. Olivia Cyra?
  • Teagan is nms. First of all, it's very surnamey which always irritates me. Second, that name has always just been one of those names that I hate for no apparent reason. (See also Tatum, Abigail and Caitlin) I realize that second bit isn't very helpful so sorry about that.

Cyra, although it very well could be legit, appears to be a youneek spelling of Sara to me at first glance. If you go with a name like Teagan I'd suggest going with a more straight forward feminine middle name.

Also Tegan & Sara is a somewhat popular indie(ish) music group, which is what immediately came to mind when I saw this name.

  • I personally am not crazy about Teagan but it's a good name. I grew up with a Tegan (Pronounced Tegg-an) and we all called her Teggs. It went ok.

Teagan is nms. First of all, it's very surnamey which always irritates me.

Yeah but... it's a legitimate first name though.

See, it's like the Mercedes conundrum. When people hear a name like Mercedes, they say things like "Ew. Why would you name your kid after a CAR?" but actually, Mercedes, the company, was named after the founder's daughter, Mercedes. It is a German first name in its own right.

So we make these associations with names that sort of ruin them.
  • Teagan is okay. Cyra is not cute at all. Save Cyrus for a boy, or maybe choose another "C" name instead.

Olivia is a classic and ages well.
Teagan sounds cute for a little girl. I don't necessarily like cyra. I don't like the sound and it sounds similar to siren.

Olivia is extremely popular,.. As is Sophia. That's the only downside.

I think you can come up with something between Olivia and teagan :)
  • Olivia Teagan is nice!
  • I like Teagan. I say stick with Cyra since it's a family name. I think Olivia and Sophia are too popular, but that's just me.

I completely understand that and I know it's a proper name. It has a certain feel to it that I just don't like. That's all I meant. OP asked for opinions...that's mine.

  • I like Teagan a lot actually. Cyra is hard for me to pair with it. It's almost like with Teagan you need to reel in the middle name a bit. Teagan Olivia flows much better in my opinion.

  • I actually like Teagan but I think putting it with Cyra is a bit too much. What about Teagan Olivia or Teagan Sophia?

  • Like Teagan, so much better than yet another Olivia. My first association was Tegan and Sarah, but that's not a bad thing.

  • I wouldn't go with Olivia or Sophia because they are super popular right now.  Yes, they are beautiful names.  But I feel like when I was in college, 50% of my sorority was named Jen, Ashley, or Sarah (all top 5 names the year I was born), so personally am disinclined to go with any top 5 name unless you're ok with your daughter's friends calling her primarily by her surname.

I like Teagan, however, I do not like Teagan Cyra because I don't like the combination of two very unique names.  Do you have any other family names aside from Cyra that you could use?
  • I like Teagan but not the middle name choice. Could you do Teagan Sophia?

Olivia Sophia is a lovely name too--and I understand your popularity issue but it is really pretty and if that is a name you love the. Go for it.

I like Teagan. Not sure about Cyra with Teagan.  I like the meaning little poet, and I actually like the sound of it.
  • I have always loved the name Tegan. I think it is different enough but still "normal" sounding.
    Maybe Tegan Cora
  • I love Teagan! It's a beautiful name :)
  • Both names are fine, just nms, but together they are a mouthful and I don't think they flow. I think you'd need to pick one of them and them compliment it with something simple and familiar to most people.
