Potty training toddler?

anyone else trying to pottybtrain a toddler during all this?!

This is the worst but preschool starts in the fall and she has to be fully potty trained by then

She was doing well till the baby came along.

Definitly my least favorite thing to teach so far!

my 3 year old refuses to go near the potty unless standing on it...let me know if you figure something out I have no idea

  • We started on Monday and he is fully potty trained already (minus diapers for nap and bedtime). Yesterday we even ventured out of the house and he went on the potty in the trunk of my car and stayed dry the whole time. We tried in March before the baby came but he just wasn't ready. This time it was a breeze because he was ready. Don't rush it.

  • My 3 year old was 85 percent trained and then regressed big time when DS2 came along. I feel like we're starting all over again. And I agree, I hate potty training over everything so far!
  • I tried before about a month DS arrived just to see if she was ready because she was showing signs and I thought, "wouldn't it be great to just have one in diapers?" But she wasn't ready. I'll probably try again at some point this summer.

  • Sticker charts have made all the difference for us! I put toys on top of the fridge and when she gets twenty stickers (1 for number 1, 2 for number 2) she gets the toy. I've had to buy a few toys and DVDs but we are almost at 100% including nights and naps! Wahoo! Good luck!
  • We are getting ready to start potty training DD1 next week.

@jessicazimmer Did you use a specific training method? Looking for suggestions and would love to know what worked so well for you.

  • @mrskindy40 How old is your LO who just trained? What did you do?
  • @MamaC1983 He will be 2 and a half next month. I just told him we weren't going to use diapers anymore because there were other babies that needed them. I told him we would use them for naps and nighttime still because it's hard to feel like you have to go when you are sleeping.

I put his potty in our kitchen which is a central part of our house. He had picked out Paw Patrol underwear so I told him he had to keep them dry. The first day he was reluctant and was holding his pee (so I knew he had the bladder control!) He cried because he didn't want to go so I told him he could have a surprise if he went. After he went I over the top praised him and he was really pleased with himself. Then we talked about how much better he felt after he went and what it felt like when he needed to pee.

Tonight we went out to dinner and did errands. We live 30 min from anything so we were gone 2.5 hours. We keep a potty in my trunk so we are always prepared for when he needs to go.

Also, if he wants to do something, like play on the swing set, I'll tell him he has to sit on the potty first and then we will go.

  • We made sure DS who week be 3 in October was potty trained before the baby came. I'm so glad we did! We found the port watch really helpful. When he was having accidents it was because he was too busy playing. The music would go off to tennis him to go every 30,60 or 90 min. Got it off of Amazon.

  • Picking out big boy underwear helps also. DS is all about his transformer underwear.

  • We really wanted her potty trained before the baby but didn't rush it - we bought a little potty and also an insert to put in our toilets so she can use them. It is Minnie Mouse and was at babies r us or target. Also let her choose underwear . She was interested and started trying but the sticker charts really made all the difference. When she goes she gets a sticker for her chart and a sticker for her hand. We took her to target and let her pick out the toys so she is invested and involved in the whole process. I actually had to give her chocolate to get her off the potty the other night, she was so determined to get her next toy she decided to sit and wait for poop to come! I think talking to them like an adult and being calm and patient is the best method. I had a friend who did cold showers to her little boy and he still has problems at like seven years old :(
  • We also did the sticker chart we made a big neon green poster and hung it right in the bathroom. He loved it. Like others have said though your LO has to be ready and interested otherwise you just going to frustrate both of you.

DS1 will be 3 at the end of August and we we are making great progress. He is in underwear and always asks to use the toilet. We did the transition to underwear about 2 weeks ago. I tried toilet training before baby was here but he was very resistant. What worked best for us is getting rid of the diaper (except for sleep).
