Baby Names

What do you think of the name Ione?

I am a pretty big fan of the name Ione (pronounced Eye-oh-nee), which is the Greek version of violet. It's pretty, it's rare and it's real.

I am aware that it's not the easiest name to pronounce at first sight, nor probably the easiest to spell correctly, but as someone with a name that gets butchered more often than it should be, I don't consider this to be the worst thing in the world.

What do you think?

  • OVerall I just don't care for it.  Neither the sound or look appeal to me.

  • I like it. My favorite movie is Say Anything, and Ione Skye played Diane Court. Ever since I saw her name, I liked it a lot, and didn't have a problem pronouncing. Do you have a middle name picked out?

I love Ione Skye too, and she's how I was introduced to the name so long ago!

I was thinking Ione Joy or Ione Wren, but those can definitely change.

ETA: Also Ione June, after my grandmother.

    Both pretty options!

  • I kinda like it. It's different but not too out there.
  • I like it!
  • NMS, but it is a real name so if you love it go for it.

I have an acquaintance who named her daughter that this year. I only see her posts on social media but for the longest time I thought it was Lone (ranger? lol) since the Uppercase "i" looks like a lowercase "L". Totally side eyed it until she explained it and now I think is a beautiful name!
  • reminds me of abcde

  • I thought it said lone at first, too. Aside from that, I would have had no idea how to pronounce it, and it's just not a very pretty sound or spelling, to be honest. Not a fan.
  • I thought it was lone at first too, but once I realized it was an uppercase i, I knew how to pronounce it. I think it sounds really pretty.
  • I think it sounds pretty but most people will not know how to pronounce it. I don't know if that matters to you.
  • I think it depends where you live. In the US, I believe most people will think it's pronounced like loan. You and your child will spend a lot of time correcting people on pronunciation and spelling.
  • I know an Iona... Always thought it was really pretty.
  • I like it but I only know the pronunciation from the actress which a lot of people don't know of. Prepare for people to mispronounced it.

  • I kind of like it! Just make sure to use sarif fonts so people see it is a capital I and not a little l. Lol
  • That will suck for your kid to spend their entire life correcting the spelling and pronunciation of their name. Maybe middle name if you absolutely can't give up this name? Oy.
  • I thought it was Lone also when I looked at it.  NMS, but if you love it go for it.  I've seen way worse!

  • @adriennerose80 if your user name is your real name, you don't know HALF the struggle of having a name that is both hard to pronounce and spell.
  • I like it:)

  • I thought it said Lone too. I think it's going to be mispronounced a lot. I wouldn't have any idea how to pronounce it if I saw it. It's a pretty name but I think it's going to be a tough one.
  • Definitely thought Lone. I also would probably pronounce it Iona... nms at all

Not my style at all...I really don't like the sound either, sorry
  • I like it! I also love that you made sure to tell people it's "real" because many people have not seen it before and there are sadly so many made up names that you do have to do that with unique but legit ones!

I thought that too! I was so ready to post a Lone Ranger gif.

Well, I'll do it anyway for S&G

I do like the name Ione. It's just unfortunate that most fonts make that look like a lowercase L.

  • See, the whole LONE thing is one of the reasons I asked. I think it's a beautiful name but it just looks funny on paper.

  • I didn't think it was Lone, but didn't know how to pronounce it. After hearing the pronunciation, I think it's beautiful.

  • Not a huge fan but it is also not offensive. Go for it if you love it.
  • I..... like it.

I had to say it to myself a few times. But it locked in. And it stuck.

I thought it was Lone... The mispronunciation would annoy me to death.
