Zofran help!

Hi can someone share advice? What's the best way to take zofran? I've taken it 30 minutes before eating and I've been ok today until later at night I felt queasy again. I couldn't eat anything but a baked potatoe. Should I be taking this like a regular medication twice in a day or only take it when I feel sick?

Re: Zofran help!

  • Last pregnancy I took it when I started to feel sick, but it didn't work for me. Maybe taking it more consistently would help? Sorry, I'm not much help!

  • I asked my doctor this question. Zofran should only be taken as needed, so it doesn't help to take it on a schedule.

As far as when to take it, I take it first thing when I wake up before eating. However, mine is dissolvable. I guess it is much easier to take and keep down. Is yours dissolvable, too. If not, check with your doctor about switching!
  • @kimber308 yes dissolvable Honestly I don't know if it's helping much I took it this morning because I felt queasy but I still feel the same way after taking it :(
  • I would do some research on Zofran, I have come across articles stating that recent research studies have shown that Zofran has been linked to causing as well increasing the risk for birth defects. I was prescribed Zofran with my second pregnancy but didn't take it because I try to stay away from medicine while pregnant.
  • I'm on zofran dissolvable 8mg and have been taking it for a couple weeks now. Twice a day(every 8 hours till bed). Taking it with a swig of Gatorade before I get out of bed and then immediately eating helped me a ton! After that I was good till around 3ish and started to feel icky again. As soon as my nausea started to churn I would take another with Gatorade and eat. I think that combo helped me. And then I'd be fine falling asleep later in the evening around 11. Zofran has been my live saver and I'm not just saying that. I couldn't eat threw up 30times a day and couldn't get out of bed I was useless and now I feel like my old self. Good luck!!!!
  • Are you taking 4mg or 8mg? Maybe the 8 would help better. I'm sorry your miserable. :-/ It's tough. Hopefully this sickness ebbs away soon for all of us.

  • Mine is just the 4mg for now. I take it religiously ever six hours because if I don't I'm even more miserable. I've still be somewhat nauseous with it but not nearly as bad as I am without it. I take it when I wake up and before I even get out of bed. I also eat a piece of bread or like 4 crackers with it before I get out of bed. Maybe this will help!!!
  • I take my zofran as needed for nausea. But because my nausea and vomiting have been so bad, my doc also prescribed diclegis which is a new medicine that you take on a schedule. Maybe ask you doc about that.
    Good luck!

I second @TSkeen3 to be careful of using it daily. Try to use it as needed as much as you can. All my sisters (i have 5) plus my mom, had really bad nausea/vomiting until third trimester. They all lost weight because they would vomit 4-5 times a day. I'm the same as them.  My oldest cautioned me to avoid zofran or any anti emetics because her friends who took zofran all now have problems with their kid's health.

I'm a pharmacist - so I decided to look into it. It is pregnancy category B so it should be safe. I looked into the articles that basically deemed it as "safe". There was one main article that addressed the safety in 2004. (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1471-0528.2004.00236.x/full). It basically ruled out malformations at a risk of 5-folds. It states though because the sample size was so small (176 women), it couldn't rule out any risk of malformations lower than that. There was another one that was in 2013 that states it was fine. Studied 1,970 women, but all these patients took zofran ~10 weeks and later -- none in their earlier pregnancy weeks when majority of the development is occurring.

There's a study in 2013 that had over 800000 women, they found that there was 2-fold higher risk of cardiac (heart) malformations) with an overall increase risk of 30%.
There was another article that had over 5000 women in it (the larger the number of people in a study the stronger the study), "Of potential importance, a recent large control study by the Sloan epidemiology unit and the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention has detected a 2- fold increased risk for cleft palate assoiated with ondansetron taken for NVP in the first trimester of pregnancy [odds ratio = 2.37 (95% CI, 1.284.76)].4"

So the main study that gave it its safety possibly couldn't detect these 2-fold risk of malformations because the sample size was too small.
I am always nauseous and vomiting a lot , but to be honest.... even as  a pharmacist.. i'd probably avoid as many meds as i can unless i absolutely have to take it (i.e. antibiotic for a UTI or something). there's just lack of studies for majority of the meds.

For the nausea, i found saltine crackers and peach really helps me. Ginger does not.. it makes me vomit more.

    Good luck!

I tried zofran once and it gave me a terrible migraine all day long. So I decided against it because of how crappy it made me feel and because of all of the research I have done on it. Instead, I struggle through the day. Throw up two or three times and keep down what I can. My doctor suggested I don't take it unless needed and not to worry too much unless I'm unable to keep things down. I hope you start to feel better soon.
  • No I'm not taking it. I refuse to. Try vitamin b6. I'm just avoiding food that makes me vomit and sticking to those that I can handle.
