Hi ladies... Thank you all so much for the support and well wishes... Unfortunately I am still in the hospital. In addition to mastitis I have some other infection.. Possibly kidney or maybe some kind of staph infection that I most likely picked up when I was here two weeks ago for the delivery... My white blood cell count has been really high and the antibiotics haven't been helping so they have put me on really strong ones... I have been pumping and sending the milk home.. Doctor said to keep feeding her breast milk but since we are still waiting on blood cultures to figure out exactly what is going on I told DH to give her formula. That is my anxiety kicking in but I just feel more comfortable giving formula than worrying about the milk being OK. He has been taking all the breast milk home in case we use it and at least my supply is still good.. And tomorrow I have appointment with the lactation consultant so she can give more information to ensure that all the meds are Ok with breast milk. It is so hard being away from my kids and not knowing when I can go home is killing me
@ElRuby I'm glad to see an update. I can only imagine how hard that must be to be away from your LO like that... I would probably do the same thing with giving formula now and saving pumped milk for the confirmation. Better peace of mind that way. I hope they get this cleared up for you quickly.
@ElRuby I'm so sorry, lady. Hope it gets resolved soon. You are such a soldier for continuing to pump and ensure your LO is well fed.
I am SO jealous of you ladies with soft boobs and sufficient supply!! I am always full and sore, except like maybe up to 30 minutes after he eats on one side.
@ElRuby I hope you get through this difficult ordeal soon. Sending thoughts and prayers your way!
I know we've discussed this in previous threads but I'm feeling like a total rookie for a STM. (No offense to FTM it's just that even as an "experienced" mom, I still don't always know what I'm doing. lol)
Anyway LO's spit up issue is out of control! At his last ped appt the dr didn't seem too concerned. She just gave me tips on what to do which I know we talked about before in other threads. So after following some of the advice here and from the dr things were getting better.
Then for the last 3 days, this kid just spits up A LOT. All. The. Time! No matter what I do he just spews out milk after a feeding. He once spit up on my boob while nursing and continued to nurse like nothing happened! I talked to a midwife friend and she says you can't overfeed a breastfed baby and that what's going on is totally normal. She said as long as he's gaining weight, has good diaper output and doesn't cry whenever he spits up there's nothing to worry about.
Any thoughts on this?
Maybe I'm just overthinking this. I don't remember DS1 spitting up this much. I also don't want to rush to the dr since he has a ped appt this week and he's not sick/ feverish. My LO is a preemie at about 8 weeks old. Maybe it's a preemie thing or it's something 2 month old babies do? He also has to take vitamin supplements (trivisol and iron) which he spits out every time I give it to him.
Ugh. Maybe I just need to chill out. Didn't mean to write such a long post dedicated to spit up. That's it, I'm calling this LO Spitty. That's his new name.

My kid is only two-ish weeks old and is having the same issue. He was projectile spitting up, then it stopped for several days... Then this morning he did the spit up on the boob that you just described. He's happy, not crying, no fever.
I've noticed he does best if I let him nurse as long as he wants on one boob, then cut him off for 30+ minutes. It's hard because he will fuss like he's hungry, but he's definitely not. The moment I give him the other boob, he spits up everywhere. (I made that mistake this morning, thinking the issue had resolved itself.) I've engaged DH to help distract him when he gets like this, but DH acts like I'm starving the kid and doesn't handle the fake hunger cues well.
I'm a FTM and don't take offense to what you said. Actually, knock on wood, I'm pretty proud of DH and me so far. We're not freaking out too much now, after week 1. It is inevitable, though...
@virginiaunicorn11 thanks! I just felt like a crazy woman. Spitty would do the same thing fussing about like he's still hungry after spitting up. He definitely likes to comfort nurse and is starting to not like his pacifier anymore.
At least it's breastmilk. Projectile vomit after eating solids is a whole other thing.
Anyone else's babe "spitting up" milk out their nose? It's happened a few times over here and it just looks so painful!
Mine sneezes a few times a day while breastfeeding. It comes with a shower of milk from his nose. But then he latches back on and keeps eating like its no big deal...
@CillyMama I can't find it but I feel like someone else mentioned their LO had a spitting up problem and it was eventually discovered to be a medical condition... Maybe @devyns2nd ??
It is so wonderful how an online community of strangers can make someone feel better! Thank you all so much for thinking of me.
I am really starting to get so down... A face time call with my son was so hard and now I just keep crying... Plus no one has any idea when they are letting me go home... I told them if I am here much longer they will probably be sending me to psych .... I hate when the really good nurses shift ends and they send in the duds ....
Due to a severely sore nipple on one side, I need to pump on that side today. Due to that, I'm having to feed LO on the other side only. I'm hoping a few pumping sessions will give my nipple enough time to heal so I can EBF again. I don't want to introduce a bottle yet (LO is only 1 weeks old/waiting for 3 weeks to start), so am I doing this right? I plan on pumping when I would have fed on that side...
Aww @ElRuby hang in there, lady! Can a friend or relative come for an hour or two to keep you company? Maybe a strong personality who can demand answers for you? Sounds pretty serious and they're working on getting you better. Will be thinking of you! Vent here as needed, we're here for you.
@virginiaunicorn11 thank you! I have had visitors which has been nice ... I just miss my kids so much... I am on Peds floor away from sick people so I may have DH bring them in if I am going to be here a lot longer. This is so rough
I felt the exact same way with my 1st. I made it about a month and I just couldn't do it! Let me tell you it was SO much less stressful using formula. And my now 4 year old is as healthy as can be! If it's not working out then switch her over! It doesn't make you let of a mother!
Ok anyone have any experience with pin prick feelings in their nipples when they aren't feeding? We're laying here on the couch trying to nap and I just have these little pin prick feelings in my nipples.

That's what let down feels like for me. It happens even when I'm not feeding at times. Uncomfortable and annoying.
I'm so obsessed with breastfeeding. LO will be two weeks Thursday and I'm terrified she isn't gaining. She was 6/11 when born and 6/2 when we left the hospital. She is so tiny. We've had to put her in premie diapers. She's having so many poopie diapers, she has a rash. I change her up to 3x per feeding. They're more like wet gas, but I can't leave her in it. We are trying coconut oil on her bottom. Hopefully she will heal up. I've never EBF before and have never dealt with so many poops.

That's the feeling I get when its time to nurse/let down for me too. It's like a tinge to remind me its time.

Ugh how annoying! I had just fed her like 30 mins prior to feeling it too. Glad it's normal. My LO is 3 weeks and I've just started feeling this

Mines 4.5 weeks and it probably started for me around 3 weeks too. And I was sad I wasn't feeling let down like everyone else... Lol
Well I just pumped and fed her. And now I'm feeling the let down again! Ugh so do you just ignore it?! I don't want to continue to feed or pump since I don't want my supply to increase a lot
Just tried to pump for the first time. Barely got anything out. *sigh* My breasts just don't like pumps. It was like this last time too. Baby can eat from the breast just fine but pumping sucks. My husband is adamat that we give the baby a bottle today and let me get some rest. Which means formula. DH never interferes with baby stuff. So for him to be so authoritative about this must mean I'm more of a mess than I realize.
@katyertl and all - I have that tingle (borderline painful) probably 50% of the time. I was starting to think maybe we have thrush, with no other symptoms. I hate it!! loooove breastfeeding LO and it IS getting better...but really just want to be regulated and feeling good again
LO is eating minimum every 2 hours. Definitely a growth spurt..but it leaves me absolutely no time to pump and I really need to start my stash now, I realized I only have 12 weeks left and 4 oz frozen (
I just can't figure out when to pump now that she's eating so frequently and she eats for about 40 min at a time. And does not sleep in between so it's not even like I can put her down and go pump. Ugh hopefully this is a short phase because I'm already getting panicky about not having enough frozen breast milk (I work nights and she will be at daycare during the day so I need 24 hours worth of breastmilk 3x a week).
TTC: 1/2014
BFP: 9/24
EDD: 6/8/2015
Sorry for the poor man's siggy...ticker won't load regardless of how many tips I read.

I am feeling the same... It's rare I have time to pump and when I do it's only like 1.5 ounces ... Pumping never has worked well for me, I'm already accepting the fact LO may need to be supplementing when he is 3 months old and I go back to work
Just went back and read some of the early new moms posts. Reading that a lot of y'all went through what I am going through now helped a TON! Newer moms, you may want to go back & check them out!
@ElRuby I hope you get to leave the hospital soon so you can go home and snuggle with your LOs!
Since this thread has gotten kinda long (which is great!) I was thinking that maybe we should have a weekly breastfeeding check-in? Formula feeding and exclusive pumping moms can be included too. I remember there being a breastfeeding check-in when I first joined then it just fizzled out.
Would anyone be interested in doing that? I'm fine with continuing with this thread as well if a weekly check-in is a bit much.
I think breastfeeding got easier today. Day 27. There's hope!
Day 27! Goodness, I'm on day 7, and nipples are soooo sore. I know it will get better, but was hoping sooner than 27 days
That is EXACTLY what I was thinking (on day 7 too!!). DH is stopping to get me some Earth Mama Angel Baby nipple butter today! I'm praying it helps!!!
I have the earth mama angel baby nipple butter and have started applying it religiously since yesterday, also hoping it starts helping. I'm in a constant state of owwwww.

So part of the reason I posted that was just to be honest about HOW LONG its takes. I was started to repair that if it hadn't gotten better that it never would. It does but you have to hang in there. It sounds like you guys are on the throws of initial nipple pain, that starts to get better a lot sooner than day 27 but you might still be holding your breathe through the unit latch for a while. Yesterday I realized I wasn't doing that anymore. I wasn't painfully engorged 100% of the day. And I wasn't living in fear that my three year old would bump my chest accidently.
I am still not completely comfortable or anything but I finally feel like ill be able to reach my breastfeeding goals. This is my second time, it did take longer the first time but it did get bearable. Hang in there everyone.
@ElRuby Fell better! Thinking of you and feeling terrible that you are going through this.
@CillyMama Your LO sounds exactly like my first. He is a happy healthy boy that turned 3 last week. He vomits at night about once a month seemingly for no reason but that's the only lingering puke issue we have!
