August 2015 Moms

W. T. F.

I don't know if I can fully explain why this royally pisses me off, but I literally just had some stranger in an unmarked, unidentified SUV park across the highway from my house in a completely rural area and leave a starter kit/sample box of formula on my doorstep. No return address. No information as to who or where it came from.

The only thing I can think of is my information was sold by one of the baby gear sites I have ordered from. Probably from Buy Buy Baby or something. These formula companies really have a lot of nerve. They will obviously go to any lengths to thwart the potential breastfeeding efforts of new moms.

Wtf.... That usually comes in the mail at my house. Took all my samples to woman's shelter. I'm surprised someone would actually deliver it to your door. Geeze. Don't let it deter you from bfing...

It won't deter me. I just find it incredibly intrusive because I know that the intention is to get my baby feeding dollars. It's shameless and arrogant. I like the idea of donating to a women's shelter! Thanks for that!

I think you're taking it a bit far.
That's just how I feel. This is private property. My home. My sanctuary. They showed up to my doorstep, uninvited. To me, that is intrusive.

As if advertising wasn't aggressive enough, they're knocking on the door of my personal residence?? That's insane to me.

Get a no soliciting sign then.

I never imagined I would have to. I thought formula companies were capable of respecting an individual's property and privacy. Apparently not.
  • A gift would be from someone that I know, without the intentions of persuading me to give them money for more over the next year of my child's life. If that were not the case, then no, I would not feel any differently. It would still feel like an intrusion.

If I order a package, paid for with my own money, then yes I expect it to be delivered.

Not the same situation by any means.

You are entitled to feel however you like about receiving free samples unsolicited. However, I am not obligated to feel the same way as you do. I won't begrudge you your feelings and would appreciate it if you would extend the same courtesy.
  • Get a no soliciting sign then.

    L O L.

I mean, is this really that big of a deal? It really does just sound like you're mad at formula companies.

    Can't say that I care.

Not everyone is going to feel the same way you do or see things your way. I don't. You are not likely to change my mind on this. I'm sorry. Probably best to consider trying to convince me to see things your way to be a moot effort.

You can continue to try and argue your point if you like, but I'm not up for arguing right now. So, you're on your own.
  • Have to agree, it's a little excessive to be so upset. It is a bit creepy that they sat in front of your house. But it was a free sample.

Like others have said, you never know when an issue with feeding can arise. It's nice to have a backup plan sometimes without having to spend an arm and a leg on something you really won't use on an everyday basis and waste your hard earned money on if your baby doesn't like it or you don't use it before it expires. From a business point of view, sure they want you to buy their product eventually, and how else will you know your baby likes it unless they try it. Try before you buy (with no obligation like a free sample!) is a very effective business strategy (coming from a business student). If you are so offended, call the company and tell them not to send anything further and donate the samples. It's a simple solution, really.
  • I give/gave my free formula samples to someone I know who is going to bottle feed and is due a month after me, you could always do the same or maybe donate it somewhere.
  • Sometimes the best thing you can do for someone's sanity is to allow them to vent without continuously trying to convince them that their feelings are unjustified.
  • @albolan80 man now I want cheese too! With crackers though, fruit is too healthy for me today.
  • Hey, some crackers have fiber!

True! I am not opposed to multi grain or whole wheat!

Based on your reaction to everyone on this public forum- sanity is a thing of the past for you.
  • Costco free samples are the greatest. :x
  • We got ours in the mail... Are you sure your mail carrier wasn't just subbed out for the day? I know we have gotten ours delivered from a random woman in a mini-van before cause the actual mailman was out for some reason and apparently she was using her own van...

I'm also kinda rolling my eyes. Even if it wasn't a subbed out mail person. I mean we get people from the local newspaper that come by with a free newspaper every few months with the sole intention of trying to get us to fork over lots of money on a subscription. They actually stand there and ask us to... I can't imagine getting this irate about it. So what? Someone gave you some formula samples. Give them away if you don't want them. I EBF-ed, never supplemented, but was given free samples of formula on more than one occasion. I just gave them away and never felt any pressure/urge to use them even when we were really struggling. It just wasn't what I was going to do, so it didn't bother me that they were sitting there.I agree it sounds like you are more just upset with formula companies and maybe feeling insecure about being able to breastfeed. If that's the case, try and focus on fixing that rather than getting to irate about someone dropping some free samples on your doorstep.
  • How long until this post is deleted or given the mysterious .... Title??
  • @msmolecule I would be annoyed too. I get peeved about being the subject of corporate marketing campaigns especially if my details have been onsold without my permission. It's different to getting a free sample in a supermarket - kind of like being stalked out in your private space. Grrr.

You might get more relief from ringing the company and telling them to remove you immediately from their contact list and telling them you don't appreciate people turning up on your doorstep. Then pocket (or donate) the samples. It is handy to have some formula in your cupboard just in case.
  • You're mad about free samples and yet here I am trying to get free samples just in case BFing doesn't work out.... sheesh if you don't want them send them to people that do.
