Thoughts on this name

so hubs and I were discussing baby names last night ( we're team green) and somehow, the name 'Briar' came up for a girl. When we were talking, the name immediately made me think of 'sleeping beauty/brier ( briar?) rose' and I liked the wimsy of it, but now, in the light of morning, I'm concerned it might be a little to obscure. We have one daughter already, named River. What are your ladies thoughts? I like that I rarely hear that name ( and the time I have heard it, it's been on a boy) and that its unique, but on the other hand, I don't want to saddle her with a name that's too out there!

Re: Thoughts on this name

  • I think some celebrity, I can't remember who, named their little girl briar a little while ago. I think it's a cute name and definitely not common.

  • I like it!  I think it's different without being over the top.
  • Briar is alright, it's no more "out there" then River.

I would avoid pairing it with Rose for obvious reasons.

I love it paired with your daughters name!
  • I think it works with your other daughters name. Ditto no mn Rose though

Briar is nice. It's uncommon but not unheard of, and in my opinion those are the best names.
  • I like it, but I'm naming my son "River" :)

  • I personally do not like briar for a girl. Mmmm it makes me want briars ice cream

I think it's ok. Like others said, it's no more out there then River. I personally prefer more classic, common, dare I say- boring- names, but I don't think there is anything fundamentally wrong with Briar. And if it's too "weird" for her growing up it's easy enough to nickname Bri/Bree. Maybe consider a more classic middle name to give her some options, but yeah, I think it's fine.
  • I object to the comments saying "River" is "out-there" whatever that means.  In 2014, 603 babies were named River compared to just 64 babies born in 1994.  They may be less common, but not everyone wants to name their baby Jacob or Aiden. :)

  • I love it! Aurora is very beautiful too.
  • Briar is a great name. I also agree that pairing it with Rose is a little much.

  • I love it!!
  • I agree with not pairing it with Rose. Lol now to find a middle name we can both agree on! If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears!

I was just echoing the OP's language in how she phrased her question. I personally didn't mean anything other than basically what you said, that River isn't as common as Jacob or Aiden and that Briar isn't crazy, just not as common as Mary or Jane.
  • I love the name Briar. It was a top contender for us but we are having a boy. My very good friend is named Briar and it is awesome.

I like it. I thought it was a boy's name. I think you should go with whatever you love. I really like the feel of the name but I would personally keep looking since I feel it is more on the boy side but once again, only you know what name you adore!! The baby will make the name wonderful :)
  • I'm not too fond of it. What about Blair? Pretty similar but I've heard it used on girls
  • Makes me think of briar rabbit from grade school. I always think about if my child would get made fun of with the names. I don't really like it at all, sorry!! Best of luck, regardless as long as you and your hubs love it, that is what matters.
  • I love it! Spelled Briar!
  • Rachel Bilson named her baby Briar Rose. I think it's sweet. Not many people will call her by her full name anyway
  • I love the name Briar. I do agree on the Rose thing though. A middle name I like with it is Leigh.
