Gestational diabetes

i failed my first 1hr test, tooky 3hr and failed that too. (Feeling really sad and bumbed)
I have to go on a diet and watch what I eat and test my sugar. It's so frustrating, I had to go through with with my first child ( not my second) which was almost 6 years ago. I wanna eat everything I'm not allowed to have Juice and fruit and i can't really have juice and my fruit is very limited. Any suggestions.

Re: Gestational diabetes

  • I have T1D almost my whole life so I always say at least GD is just short term and focus on that awesome prize. You will get juice again. In the meantime, make the fruit you have really count (some fruit gives you bigger servings than others). Find something else you enjoy like a certain cheese or salty snack to have as an occasional treat too.

  • It gets easier to treat as you figure out what you can and can't eat. It's frustrating. I developed it in the first trimester, I'm on insulin and I have my frustrated days but I remember I'm doing this for my baby. I don't cheat, I'm week 24 now and would love juice and a cupcake but that would harm my baby. You can do this!
  • You can eat a cupcake.... It's about choices, if I want a cupcake I eat meat and veggies and then have my cupcake... No point making yourself miserable. I am also on insulin, which means tight control, believe me one high number for a cupcake is not going to hurt your baby...
  • In my opinion the easiest way to manage your gestational diabetes is to know how many carbs you are allowed each meal/day and stick to that (if its per day spread it out). Ive at times gotten a donut and split it with a friend to indulge but not go over. It might mean pairing a treat like that with a lower carb/ higher protein meal but it can be done. I can say that when I found out I was gd I had to toss all of my cravings out the window and only have a craving for Circle K type crushed ice. I do know that there are some ok sugar free drink mixes out there and Ive only been getting the cheapest but the ones I have at the moment taste like gatorade. They might be worth looking into for you although they sadly arent the same (juice was a major craving). As for the fruit Id look up the carb information on all of them and stick to the ones that are lower carb and work it out into your diet as I recommended above. Hope some of this helps.
