INDUCTION WITH EPIDURAL? Help!

scheduled for an induction on the 24th... It seems like it's an awful procedure when done without an epidural.... But what if you know that you want an epidural?

Anyone had both? Was labor still horrible? I plan on getting an epidural.... Just wondering about everyone's experiences?

Re: INDUCTION WITH EPIDURAL? Help!

  • In my prenatal class I heard that here in MB, CA 96% of woman who are induced end up getting an epidural or other form of medication for pain management. So I think it's great you're already on board for planning in advance to get an epidural.

I haven't had my babe yet so I don't have any experiences to share but best of luck! Blessings!

  • I'm being induced on the 24th, too! My hospital will administer an epidural any time from 4cm dilated up to 9cm. I'm being induced with the evil, evil pitocin and was told that as long as I've reached the 4cm threshold that both could potentially be administered at the same time.

With my first daughter I already had my epidural when my labor stalled and they gave me pitocin to jump start it again. Labor was just fine for me with both drugs. Good luck!

I was induced May 22 and had LO on the 24th. It took me 20 hours to get to 1 cm dilated on the full dose of pitocin, and this was when my water broke. It was immediately too painful to do without any meds. My pain level went from a 4 to a 10 instantly. The nurses told me they didn't normal give epidurals until 3 cm, but excepted me from that guideline because I had been laboring for 20 hours already. I didn't have the experience that most women have with epidurals slowing progress. In fact, within 5 hours I was at a 3, and 2 hours after (i took the best nap of my life) I was at a full 10 and +1 station. So go for that epidural!! Mine was absolutely wonderful.
  • With my first child, I was induced at 8am, broke my water at 10am, had an epidural shortly after, delivered at 10:22pm. It felt like a long labor but 14 hours wasn't too bad. I'm scheduled for an induction on the 24th with my second child too!
  • I was induced and got an epidural. But I wasn't checked before I got it and ended up delivering about 15 mins later. So it hadn't even really kicked in yet. Such a waste.
  • I was induced with an epidural and it was fine. It's very painful until you get the epi and then it feels great!! :)
  • I was scheduled for a cervical ripening (using the gel) on the 15th and then an induction on the 16th, but the gel got things going quickly and my water ended up breaking a few hours after administering the gel so when I got admitted back to L&D I was dilated to 3.5 cm and they did the epidural. Once I got the epidural everything was just dandy. Around 8 cm my contractions started widening out so they started pitocin and I had one spot that the epidural wasn't working on and it hurt like heck. Hopefully once you get the epidural you won't feel anything. :)
  • I had an induction yesterday and labored for 9 hours before they broke my water due to me being stuck at 4 cm the whole time I got the epidural 10 mins later and extremely thankful I did it helped so much
  • I was induced with my first and they broke my water prior to getting the epidural. If I could do it over again I would get the epidural first. It was great though , very relaxing labor after the epidural.
