Flavors/Smells that take you back to childhood...

For some reason with this pregnancy (my second) I am craving things that remind me of my childhood. Today I HAD to have McDonald's for lunch. I try to avoid fast food and I know how most people feel about McDonald's specifically. However, I was one of 6 kids growing up and when we went out for dinner as a family - which was a rare and special treat - it was always McDonalds as that was all my parents could afford for all of us. Every time I take a bite of a McDonald's fry I am immediately taken back to those "special" trips with my family and the excitement we felt.

What transports you back to your childhood?

Re: Flavors/Smells that take you back to childhood...

  • I'm totally the same way!  I've been wanting to eat my mom's old nasty tuna casserole, fish sticks, wanting cheese balls from the old school canisters (Planters), eating Sherbert floats (with 7-up).  Just stuff I use to eat as a kid!

  • The powder laundry detergent my mom STILL uses. Foca.
  • Oatmeal ! My grandmother made us oatmeal with brown sugar every Sunday morning before church !!
  • Tribe and exclamation perfume take me to my tween years.

  • I've totally reverted back to childhood with food.. Plain spaghetti, grilled cheese and peanut butter sandwiches. Smell wise chlorine takes me back to childhood
  • Irish Spring soap and freshly brushed teeth always make me think of my dad. And I've def been craving some childhood throwbacks during this pregnancy, which has meant lots of homemade pancakes and chocolate chip cookies like my mom taught me to make.
  • I drove over an hour one way to my hometown to eat a chocolate frosted cake donut from my childhood best friends family bakery. It was so worth it. When I walked in to the tiny shop nothing had changed (except the prices) and it smelled just the way I remembered. Now I want another donut from there!!
  • Yes!! My memories from childhood have been coming back to me.. I smelled somthing in a store I couldn't figure it out and it was such s strong memory I knew was from childhood.. Brought a smile to my face. As far as food goes.. Little Debbie brownies and donut sticks. With my Nana
  • Bubble gum ice cream! I'll totally get a cone of it if I take DD for ice cream.
  • The smell of honeysuckles takes me back! Reminds me of summer nights catching fireflies in my backyard.

This is exactly what I was going to post. Honeysuckle is my all time favorite scent. One whiff and I'm 8 again!

  • I would "live" this a million times if I could!! Bubble gum for sure and cotton candy ice cream, yum!! Friendlys restaurant makes rockin poppin cotton candy which is cotton candy with pop rocks in it, another childhood fav, and abd LOVED And craved both a lot lol
  • I am from Louisiana so we had lots of seafood and wild game meats in our house. The few times my dad would cook, he would either make fried eggs or Deer sausage sandwiches. I can't have either without thinking of my childhood.

    - The smell of tomatoes reminds me of canning homemade tomato juice with my grandpa.

    - Saltine crackers with butter on them remind me of my grandmother.  She would always put them in chicken noodle soup and we would read while I ate lunch.  Canned peaches also remind me of her.

    - The smell of sand or dirt instantly puts an image in my mind of this playground at a park we used to always go to.  It was one of the fun wooden ones with the metal slides that would burn your legs if you weren't careful.  Everything is all plastic and wood-chips now.

    - Oust Air Freshener the “outdoor” scent makes me think of a very specific conversation with  with someone I went to middle school with.  Very weird memory trigger!

Other generic things are: squeeze-its, swimming pools, fresh blackberries, gel pens, walkie-talkie's, jelly shoes and bowling alleys.

  • Campfires - that smell always reminds me of eating smores and roasting hotdogs with my dad and little brothers.

Brewing Coffee - same as previous posts, my parents drank coffee every morning, it always takes me back to the kitchen of my childhood home.

Fresh box of crayons - Crayolas always smelled the best.  I don't know if it was the wax or the wrappers, but I loved it!

And flavor-wise - Chocolate Malt Milkshakes!  Yum!
  • The old school bath and body works smells remind me of being a kid...

Going to the mall with friends with a fresh $20 bill in my pocket and that was enough for a movie, a snack, and a little purchase. I would always buy the lotions from bath and body works: cucumber melon, juniper breeze, sweet pea. <3
  • -Anything "blue" flavored; if you got the blue Warhead candy or the blue jolly rancher you totally won.

-Macaroni but they have to be in shapes (Annie's "bunny" shapes)! The texture of them always bring me back to junior high when i learned to cook them. mmmm

-Anything cucumber melon- I remember when I was 10 I would buy J14 or Teen magazine and I would spritz myself with cucumber melon Bath and Body spray to feel more like Britney Spears lol
