Anyone Moving?

We are having baby number one this October and are moving in August to a bigger place. I'm trying to gather items bow while still in the second trimester. I definitely don't want to eave it all for when I am experiencing thurs trimester ______ (I don't know bc I'm a FTM, but I assume third tri is difficult).

Anyone else moving before baby comes? Any special plans for navigating the packing, loading, moving, unpacking process?

We bought our first home when I was about 4 months pregnant and moved when I was about 5 months, so a little earlier than you, but similar. I didn't buy anything until we moved in or ordered it to be delivered after we moved (furniture). But we went from a tiny one bedroom condo to a large house that I needed to furnish and decorate before baby arrived. It was a project!!!

  • We are looking to buy a new house so we very well could be moving before our third gets here.  My plan is just to hire the movers to do all the hectic stuff.  With our second we were in the middle of a complete remodel of our house.  We were painting the week before our second son arrived and the new carpet and furniture all happened while I was in the hospital.  The best advice I have is to accept help when it's offered, put off buying what you don't need until after you move, and learn to relax some.  Realistically you will have about 2 months/slightly less to get organized in your new place.  It's ok if it's not all done the first weekend you are there, or even the first few weeks. That's something I personally have a hard time with but the more I learn to relax the better any situation is.  With our second I didn't have the "picture perfect" house set up like I did with my first but it was functional and then I set it to my needs as I had time.  Good luck.

  • Our house is listed for sale and our new house should be finished in October :-O

So we may move once before the baby comes and once while it's a newborn! I went ahead and order a crib, dresser and we are ordering the glider this week. I felt like I couldn't wait any longer because the crib could be on back order. The glider takes 8-12 weeks to come in! And that is hoping that everything comes in perfect condition!

We plan to hire movers and I have started packing all my clothes and shoes. Clothes were easy because I don't fit into most of it!
  • We are moving on Aug 1st. I haven't really bought anything yet. We can start fixing the place up in July. It needs some paint and we are redoing the floors. I am waiting until the middle of July to buy furniture so it will be delivered late July, early August. I feel a lot of pressure and anxiety about getting everything put together!! My shower is in late August so I won't have a lot of baby stuff to pack. I already started to take stuff off the walls at the current house and getting rid of old clothes. We are only moving five miles to the other side of the mountain, so we should be able to move everything in one day with a uhaul.
  • We are moving July 3rd! We haven't packed yet (eek!) but are going to start this week. We are going on our babymoon at the end of June and get back July 2nd so we are definitely hiring movers. We also have a an extra month to get out of our apartment so if we don't get everything completed in the weekend, we have time. However, we don't have much at the moment since we were living in a small apartment. We haven't bought any big ticket items for the baby yet because we wanted to get settled in to the space first and see how everything fits.
  • We are moving 6/29. We've had our house since May 14, but we've done a ton of work to it- floors, new kitchen, etc. the kitchen probably won't be done before we move in. I've been packing, but it's pretty slow. Lol. We are having movers move us. There is no way I can help. Also, our current condo has absurd rules about moving. Just makes it easier. Good luck to all of you!
  • We are moving in a couple weeks. We will be packing and moving all of our stuff on our own. We'll be staying with my in laws until we find a house which I'm so grateful for. We haven't gotten anything for this baby yet but we don't need much since we have all the gear from our twins still. I'm just trying not to stress which is definitely easier said than done. Good luck to everyone else that's moving!
  • We're not moving to our new house until our apartment lease is up in November. Just the thought of moving with a newborn stresses me out! We're hiring movers, and we're ordering new bedroom furniture that will be delivered to our new place, so hopefully it won't be too bad. :-S

O'15 September Siggy Challenge -- Third Trimester Woes
  • We are moving sometime in mid-August, I will be over 30 weeks so we are having movers though we will do all the packing. What I'm most stressed about is putting the house together after the move, coming from an apartment I really want to decorate the house and make it our own!
  • We're looking to buy a house and get moved in before baby comes. We got preapproved for a loan last week. Our realtor is taking is next week to look at homes we liked online. By the time we'll be able to close on the house, I'll be seven and a half months. Our parents are going to help us get out of our one bedroom apartment and moved into our house. My mom is determined to get both our room and baby's room set up and perfect before he gets here, but I just want his room set up for him before I go into labor.
  • We will be moving the second weekend in July. We can't afford movers, but have helped a number of friends with their moves in the past and so will be calling in favors. ;)  We just finished the de-junking stage of moving and will start packing after Father's Day (thankfully I get a three day weekend for the 4th!).

I have been told that I am in charge of hydration and traffic control. No heavy lifting. My OB said I could carry up to 20lbs, but no more than that. I've been holding off on buying things for the baby until after the move, as there is no room in our tiny apartment.
  • We move August 1st too and am I'm due in October. I've bought only a couple VERY small items, you know, the kinds of items you can't help buying when you find out you're going to be a FTM (adorable outfit here, little blanket there). We won't be doing the "buying" until we move, but we're mostly done with the "shopping."  Meaning I have all of the furniture picked out, the themes, the colors, the sheets, the curtains... We just won't push the button until we're in our new space. We're just going through room by room at this point and boxing what we're keeping but don't need now, bagging what we're donating and deciding what we're just plain throwing away. My husband and his friends will do all the physical moving the day of and I'll receive all the boxes and play "put-er-away-er" and organizer.
  • We moved at the end of July and my son was born at the end of August. We did the moving ourselves with the help of family and friends. I felt bad because I couldn't really help with much other than packing and unpacking the individual boxes. I would say to start packing boxes now because you never know how much energy you are going to have later.

We moved again last year with outr 2 and 4 year old and moving with kids is a whole other ball game. We still have a ton of painting to do and boxes to unpack! This time we moved ourselves again and we used one of those companies that delivers the shipping container to your house and then picks it up and moves it to the new house for you. It was sooooo much easier (and cheaper) than getting a u-haul and doing it ourself. We used PAck Rat, but the other company I see a lot is PODS and they are both national companies.
  • My fiance and I are moving from Scotland to England in 12 days time. 3 hours from our families. So nervous and scared but its not like its Australia! Just trying to pack it all up. My grandma bought us our crib today so seeing all our little girls stuff is keeping me excited
  • We close on Friday (3 days!!!)  which gives me about 10 weeks to unpack, get both kids' rooms ready and get the house settled before LO comes. Also, we have to buy a new car before this baby comes as well.  I'm holding it together so far but I'm trying not to think about how much I have to do in such a short time.

Fortunately I'm a  SAHM already so I really can spend the next 2 months getting everything ready so that we can just focus on being parents after I give birth.  I never knew the process would be so emotional and chaotic.  I've barely begun packing up our house as it is.
  • We're renting an apartment right now. We won't be able to get into a house for another year or so. Our lease is up July 13 of this year. We're currently in one bedroom unit. So, we're trying to find something quickly. But looking in Southern California is hard. Rents are super high. In fact, the average one bedroom in our area starts at $1250. We just want a second bedroom to accommodate baby and her things. I'm definitly feeling the crunch :/

  • We are moving 5 states away to the middle- of- nowhere at the end of the month for my husband to go to medical school. We are doing all the moving ourselves to save money and, because I can't lift anything heavy, to help my husband we decided to sell all of our furniture except our bedroom set and buy new for the house. And I really want to buy stuff for the baby, but it just makes more sense to wait and buy it after the move. It's really stressful right now!

Yep, we're moving first week of July cross-country (NY to CA); I'll be in my third trimester (and we'll be bringing along our cat, who I'm sure will be very upset about the whole process). I'm really not looking forward to it. We're not sure yet if we're driving or flying.

We are moving in November ( with our 1 month old baby). We don't have a choice, this is just how life is...trying to be zen about this (I'm a FTM). We are hiring movers. And we aren't even getting a crib till we get to the new place ( we are using a basinet in our current house).

@brittanispears I COMPLETELY feel your pain. My husband and I are from California, both of our families are out there, and that's the reason [high cost of living] we can't move home. We've only been able to visit home once in the past four years :( Good luck.

Oh, you gotta drag the cat. It sounds mean but when I moved from Idaho to Ohio six years ago, I popped her a little pill each AM & she slept the entire time I drove. She would then wake up in the evening when we arrived at the hotel. It was truly a life saver! The vet can give you some :)

  • We sold our place in March, moved in with our inlaws, and are closing on our house tomorrow!!!!!! The house needs floors, paint, and bathrooms redone before we can move in, so we are praying to be in by mid-July. Living with the inlaws while pregnant has been trying, to say the least!
  • My husband and I are moving in a week. I'll be 26 weeks. We've been slowly packing for a couple weeks but it really tires me out every time I try to do a lot at once :( good luck!
  • I'm moving 6 days before my due date so I just plan on packing all the way up until then & then having my hubby & friends help move!

My husband is in the middle of job searching so we could move at any moment. With my first, I moved 20 days before my due date. It wasn't as bad as I thought. Just had to go slow.

We are looking to move long distance come August (Tennessee to Colorado). I will be 30+ weeks of we move by then. Yikes. We also will have to buy a vehicle once we get there- the second one we have isn't baby safe in my husbands eyes and not worth the cost move it over. FTM trying not to get stressed over all the to-dos in the next few weeks/months. Many others have done it and been just fine so trying to be stress free about the whole thing. The unknown is what gets me on a stress kick.

  • This whole thread made me feel much better about our moving situation. We are closing on our house Wednesday and want to do our updates before moving in. Fortunately we have our apartment until the end of July. Unfortunately for my husband (and brothers who are helping) it's a third floor apartment and I'm not much help.
  • Just came across this thread. Does anyone have advice for moving with an infant? My little guy will be here in a few weeks and we will be moving from new jersey to oregon mid December...and driving. We just found out a week ago. Any advice for traveling with such a little guy???
  • @adpowell8 - I would recommend flying if you can and let DH drive. If you can't, just know that they mostly sleep and eat when they're that little so you'll have to stop frequently but it should be easier than with an older child. Take any help you can get with packing and whatnot.
  • We left our apartment in May and moved into my old room at my parents house until our house was done. We finally moved In last Thursday. I'm so happy we are finally in the house, but still have anxiety because we are not completely unpacked, and I'm due by the end of this month. I know we can get a lot done by then, but I'm exhausted!! I just want to go home and rest and do some nursery stuff when I get off work, not unpack. I just have to keep telling myself it will all be over soon.

We have unfortunately done it with both of my previous kids and it can be done.  Once from Arizona to Northern Ontario and the second time from New Mexico to San Antonio, Texas.  Having movers really helps, but if not try to round up friends and family to help.  Pack something small like the bouncer or pack and play in the car so you have a safe place for the baby to lay while you are getting everything into the house.  If you are driving (which is what we did both times) just stop when you need to.  If you are breastfeeding it is easier to pump and then feed the baby the fresh bottle then have to stop each time.  Don't be surprised if the baby sleeps more and eats less while you are driving.  That's all I can think of right now, it will be hard, but you can totally do it.
