What does high water level mean?

what does high water level mean? Low amniotic fluid???

Re: What does high water level mean?

  • I was under the impression that high water levels means more amniotic fluid than normal, which is a common concern with gestational diabetes. The baby would be peeing more than he is taking in bc of the insulin resistance. I have GD and when I go to the dr they check to make sure my fluid levels are not too high. But I guess it could mean a lot of other things too.

  • Normal amniotic fluid level is 5-20 so it's a big range. They obviously check this via US and your doc would tell you if they're concerned about something. If your OB mentioned it but didn't give you details, I'd put a call into the office to have them fill you in. Doc is the best person to tell you about your situation and you absolutely have a right to ask any questions you have.
  • Not to hijack the thread, but how do they check fluid levels anyway? My ob has never said anything about it.
  • My fluid levels are checked via sonogram.

  • Polyhydramnios. I've just been diagnosed with it. My deepest pool is 10.3cm the norm is between 2 and 8.

On ultrasound, they measure the black "pockets" of fluid around the baby.
  • My level was a 19 which they said is high normal. They said it could be due to sugar levels but also size of the baby. My baby is measuring large so the dr thought it was pretty normal for me to have a little more fluid. He said to cut back a little bit on the carbs.
