Thoughts from mothers of sons on circumcision?

Re: Thoughts from mothers of sons on circumcision?

  • We had our baby in Australia. I believe in the 1980s that they did away with circumsion. If you want the procedure here it's done a few months later and not covered by insurance and a surgery. Anyway there is no right or wrong answer here. The benefits of both sides can be argued until the cows come home. I've seen both sides of the fence in my dating life and both were agreeable. Lol :) . I chose not to circumcise my son. HE and his dad will look different but i highly doubt they will be comparing their penises. The reason to just do it so you look like dad is not scientific at all. I couldn't justify that argument. IMO, make a more educated decision.

  • You can chose what ever religion you want. I dont care.
But to think its okay to cut a HEALTHY functioning body part off of a non consenting minor in the name of "god" is just crazy.

And to compare this to putting a kid in a car seat or vaccines is also crazy.

You are just finding ways to make yourself better about the fact that you are okay with paying someone to strap your healthy baby down. Tear their penis apart and cut off a functioning part that has over 20000 fine touch nerve endings. With very little to no pain medication.
    Think about it.

Wow that is pretty harsh and very extreme!! I think most of us have enough common sense to know this is a little far fetched!!

    Really not necessary. SMH
  • I'm a ftm so I've never had to make this decision yet but if it is a boy he will be circumcised. My husband was born into a Catholic family and he was not circumcised and he hates it. He said in high school (in the locker room) he got mad fun of a lot. He is seriously considering having it done now because that's how much he hates it.

We will see who's kids are more well adjusted in the long run. It'll be a fun social experiment ;)

Ps nothing against bed sharing. I'm more talking about the attitude behind it all.

Ugh.  I do agree this is a personal choice.  But those of you worried about comparing penises should probably consider that circumcision rates have been falling for a long time and will continue to fall.  The CDC says under 35% for hospital circumcisions (add in the bris babies to that).  If you want their penises to look like most of the other little boys, that will be hard.  It will likely be half and half for another five-ten years, and then more of them will be intact.

Edit - Did I really put penises and hard in the same sentence?  Jeez.

  • Let me add .....

I had a friend /co worker that ended up having to get circumsized in his late 20s. I asked him if sex was better before or after. He stated that it was different, but he couldn't say if it was better or worse. He said that his penis was no more or less sensitive either way. I asked him how he felt about his mother not doing it when he was born. He didn't blame her, but he did say it was really excruciating to get it done in his late 20s. Hope this helps.

    Yes excruciating painful.
Grown med are put under and given pain meds for the healing process.

Newborns are given a shot of local anesthetic to numb the area.
Try pulling off you finger nail with just a shot of local and see how it feels.

They usually go into shock and "fall asleep" because their tiny bodies can't handle the pain.
Just because they don't remember it, doesnt mean its okay.

Oh and they get to have the healing process done in a diaoer where they pee and poop on it.

Nope. My son was asleep BEFORE the procedure and stayed asleep through it. No shock.

It is a parents choice. It is also their freedom of religion. It is wrong for you to come on here and shame parents for their beliefs. I am sure that there will be times where you as a mother do something that some one person may disagree with. But it doesn't make it right for them to treat you as you are treating other women on this board. It's their child in the end and obviously their decision in how they are going to parent their sons. As one PP stated... This was just a question as to what everyone else thought about it not an opening for bashing people. Plenty others have stated why and why not to have it done without throwing flaming balls of shit at them and calling them names and trying to make them feel as if they are horrible parents in their choices. Not everyone is going to agree with you or me or anyone else on this board. Get your panties out of a wad and suck it up. Until it's a law forbidding circumcision parents can do which ever they please. If you feel so strongly about it why don't you write the government and try to get "Jackie Sue's Anti-mutilation Law" passed.

  • There are actually tons of people trying to do just that. I imagine PP sympathizes with them.  I don't get up in arms about stuff like that, I admire her compassion and believe that she's really trying to do the best she can to convince someone to reconsider circumcision.  It isn't my method, but then I don't care that much about your kid's penis. I love that other people do and that their work and research has helped me make my choice.

Just out of curiosity, how many circumcisions exactly have you attended? Because if I had to guess how many I have been too just in the last 10 years, I would put that number at above 100. So your statement the babies going into "shock" and then fall asleep, is not reality. Have a few of these hundred babies fallen asleep afterwards? Certainly. After all, they are newborn babies. Newborn babies tend to fall asleep. But many do not and are absolutely perfect afterwards.

The healing process is completely sanitary. You use antibiotic ointment and gauze pads. So long as their diapers and dressings are changed frequently all should be perfectly healthy. I'm sure that you could find a few examples to contradict that but as I stated before, I have been to over 100 in the past 10 years. Not one of those babies got an infection.

Shock is a life-threatening medical condition that occurs when the body is not getting enough blood flow. Lack of blood flow means that the cells and organs do not get enough oxygen and nutrients to function properly. Multiple organs can suffer damage as a result. Shock requires immediate medical treatment and can get worse very rapidly. As many 1 in 5 people who suffer shock will die from it.

These babies are not in shock. Are you trying to imply that up to one in five babies that are circumcised die afterwards? I certainly hope not, because that will be a ludicrous point of view. The only thing shocking here is your choices of verbiage post after post.

"to look like daddy" is a really terrible reason. They'll spend perhaps five minutes of their lives - if that - looking at each other's penises and the other 80 years not looking at them. If his father loves him as he is, he won't care what his father's penis looks like. Or could this REALLY be about the FATHER's insecurities about the son having (shudder) more penis than him?
Moms actually know more about having intact genitalia than circumcised fathers do, so they should NOT defer to the men, who don't know what they're missing.
Most men in the developed world (outside the USA) are not cut, and they don't have all these problems people talk about - probably because doctors and parents know about intact care, especially not to meddle with it and try to make it retract before it's ready. Leaving babies' genitals alone, doing nothing, is safe, instantanous, free and almost always results in a happy man with no problems.
  • @jackiesue586 Cat got your tounge? You pop up on this BMB and throw in your highly controversial opinions but then you run away and don't answer a question?
  • I haven't read all the posts so far... But I'm a nurse and I work with the elderly. I'm going to add to the discussion that elderly males CAN have such a hard time with infections later. Because when they hit their 90s they tend to go a week or two without a shower at times. (As nurses we try to step in but they have the choice to refuse a shower.) My uncircumcised male Residents have a more difficult time... That's for sure.
