I haven't had my appointment just yet but I did get a phone call from my doctor yesterday evening. This Thursday I will be 41 weeks and I am scheduled to go in Saturday evening for an induction! Doctor said they can give me the balloon or these pills that I can take orally/vaginally that softens the cervix (don't know what they're called). Do any of you have any experience with these pills for an induction ?
I read above about the balloon....doesn't seem too bad but I want to weigh my options.

Typing too fast... Reposted below... These quote boxes are bonkers!

Cytotec dilates you as well as soften. @Zeuskay01

Well I thought the balloon helps you dilate and the pills help you soften so I don't know why it's a choice since they kind of do different things? But who knows what I know just glad it's over!!!

@klkonwi I have no clue how many cc's I got but other than the insertion part I didn't feel it! But the insertion was the worst part of my whole labor!
  • Headed in to get checked out. Crossing my fingers I'm dilating and getting closer. I'm 39+1 today.
  • @ElRuby that is exactly what I was thinking! If they both do different things then I don't get it..can they not do both? My cervix is already softened (that's what I've been told last few appointments at least), or does it not matter because they both start labor regardless ? No clue but these are all things I'm going to ask him when I see him on Thursday for my appointment.

@Zeuskay01 @ElRuby @klkonwi thanks for all this discussion as I'm strongly considering the induction they recommended for Friday. I was also wondering if the cytotec dilated you or if you needed the balloon, so thanks for answering that. And now that elruby has gave her experience that's helpful. Its also why I asked about dilation vs effacement the other day. Thanks for the info, ladies. I'm a'scairt. :-S But arming myself with knowledge helps me not be :)>-

Our babies will have birthdays super close together if you do it on Friday! Yay! No more prego symptoms!! Lol
But yes, I'm a little nervous for all this as well but I'm making sure I'm asking my questions and doing my research. You ladies have helped me tons, thanks you!
  • Just had my 38 week check up. BP is 116/60 and urine was good so the "friend" who freaked me out about preeclampsia this past weekend because of my swollen feet was wrong. I was happy to hear that news. She was no concerned with the swelling in my feet or another week of weight gain... which seriously I cannot take this effing scale. I ate better this week, moved more this week and hydrated better this week and the scale still jumped. All i can say is that im glad this pregnancy will be over early into this summer. If i retain anymore water, i will literally burst out of my skin.

Also, i expressed my concern about decreased fetal movement so they hooked me up to a monitor (despite the fact that baby's heart rate was good, my nurse practitioner wanted me to have peace of mind. i love this lady, she's been my favorite nurse ive seen thus far). Everything checked out perfectly and they showed me evidence that she was moving around with all the braxton hicks so I'm feeling good again.

6 more days till my 39 week check up where they'll start internals! I'm ridiculously excited to find out what's going on in there.

Yeah. No one is sticking 60cc of saline in a catheter balloon and stretching my cervix........I'll take the meds thanks.
The balloons do work well but so does cytotec.

60?! Good god! No wonder your patients are in so much pain! Any amount sounds painful. Here I am imagining they are filling it up with the 10cc balloon lol.
  • @Westypet DS had kidney issues in both kidneys noticed at an US @38 weeks. Unless you have a family history of kidney disease, they will most likely monitor for 1-2 years using US if it hasn't resolved itself a few weeks after birth. The other option is getting referred to a pediatric nephrologist, but that's only if it's serious. Be sure to ask your ped and make sure it's in her chart at her first appt.

We need 1 more US to make sure it's clear for DS and I forgot to ask at our last appt. They did have us count wet diapers the first few weeks to make sure the plumbing was working. Hopefully it's nothing, just a little extra monitoring!

Thank you so much! My doc didn't seem too worried about it, but I like information. The more informed I am, the more comfortable I feel.

Cytotec or cervadil is the pills/meds they are referring to. They can ether give cytotec under your tongue or they can insert it vaginally. They soften and help the cervix to open.

Good to know! I'd much rather do this than the balloon.

@mellymar you might get the solstice baby after all!
  • @Mommaswizz I hear ya on the weight gain! From my 38 to 39 week appts, it was my biggest weight jump so far! Literally shocked me and before I could stop my mouth I said 'holy shit!' right there in front of the nurse. Normally I wouldn't care, but its a religious hospital and my nurse was an older lady... I could imagine her in church and cringing at my blasphemy.

And I'm sorry I'm not due later, yo. :( I'd hang out till the end of the month with ya if I could... And yes, that comment plus gif is great, lol

  • ^^ I just hated getting abnormal results for anything! The specialist told us it's probably more common than we realize just because most women don't have late ultrasounds.

I'm guessing it was excess fluid on the kidney because the valve isn't quite developed, allowing fluid to back up? That's what we were told and we haven't had any problems.

I'm all jealous that all you ladies know where you stand! My dr office doesn't do internals at the end like it seems everyone else does. She checked me at my gbs test at week 36 and that was it. She just tells me every week that "it's a waiting game" ugh. I wish I knew where I stand even though I see the finish line. Wishing all you girlies the best!!
  • @zxxiv2 the grass is always greener. I was so disappointed at my 40+1 check yesterday cause I thought FOR SURE I made some progress. Nope. Still closed shut. I know it doesn't mean anything but I couldn't help but leave totally disappointed and sad, I think not knowing gave me some hope. Now I feel hopeless that she'll come on her own and I'll for sure have to be induced.
  • zxxiv2zxxiv2 member
@mvargas12 I'm sorry that your still sealed up tight. LO must think that they have it good in there! Did you schedule an induction date? you can always keep telling LO that if they don't come out soon, you'll be serving them a formal eviction notice! I started saying that to my LO- too bad she just kicks me in the bladder and I remember she is in charge. Lol.
  • Hey there! So I had my pre-op appointment this morning, along w/ my weekly BPP and OB appt. Everything is looking good, and I have one more appt- my NST on Friday. Monday is C- section day!  5 days, yo.

Also, on a side note, my headache was not BP related, as it was like 110/70 or something- I was majorly needing caffeine and food, as a mcd's breakfast sandwich and dt coke made the headache disappear after my appt!

    We're c section twins!

@lindsladle15 My hospital said they average almost 13.75 deliveries a day and I also found the .75 a little odd. Can we please round to the nearest whole baby? That will make me feel better.

Yes! My hospital does ~600/yr, so that would really be like 1.6/day.
  • On the plus side, searching for fat animal gifs helped cheer me up. I appreciate the love, ladies! The late in the month due date allows me to hear all your experiences before I get there myself. I just can't wait to be in the same boat!!

@zxxiv2 I'm with you. My doc won't do internals till 39 weeks. They don't want patients getting too hung up on dilation and effacement if it doesn't indicate whether or not labor is really coming or not. I'm with you though, it would be fun to see some progression or speculate if my cervix is hinting at a baby coming soon. I like to think of it like Groundhog's day. Sure the groundhog might predict an early spring but does that little jerk know anything about when spring is really coming?? Probably not.

Hahaha that is an amazing gif!

@zxxiv2 I think getting checked is a crapshoot. I don't want to get my hopes up that I'll go naturally, but being on the cusp with blood pressure, it's comforting to know that doc is doing some watchful waiting.

I could have done without the cervical check though! Ouch!!!!!!!

@mvargas12 - I was sealed up tight for two weeks. You may progress tomorrow! This whole process is bizarre.
  • Just left the doc and I am 2cm and 50% effaced and baby is at a -2 station. Had a contraction while he was checking me and looked surprised and said it was a strong one. I just laughed and said it wasn't so bad. Hoping that means I'll be able to handle contractions well. Can't wait to meet this little man!

Forgive my stupidity, but what is the -2 station thing about? My doc said I was 2.5cm 80% effaced & -2 last week also and I had no clue what that meant.
  • @Westypet that's true, just frustrating! And you're right, totally bizarre!

    @Mandisclark
It has to do with where the baby is positioned -2 is good because it means he has dropped into your pelvis 0 crowning and positive numbers are out of you lol :)
  • Ooo!! Awesome, thank you :-D So then, what we're all hoping for is like a positive 5-10 haha.
  • my belly feels tight and itchy..and walking is so uncomfortable.  i know from recent sono that the baby is at least 8 lbs (and my mom says i was almost 9lb at term, so this # is plausible)  i'm 40+0 today, FTM.  Inducing for nonmedical reasons is so tempting, but i am going to suck it up until at least 41 weeks.  hopefully she won't make me giver her an ultimatum

Here's a visual of stations in labor- 0 station is actually when the baby's head is even with the ischial spines, the narrowest part of the pelvis. So at -2 the baby's head has not yet engaged, and I believe +5 is when the baby is considered "out of you".

Oh goody! They told me DS was -1 and I was all "K?" because they never explained it. That means I'm so freakin' close!! How has this kid not popped out yet?!

Definitely not trying to be a negative Nancy but I'm pretty sure the baby isn't considered "dropped" until you get to 0. That's what my midwife said. I also have no idea where my baby is because at 40+4 I still only had 1 cervical check and asked them not to tell me what I was.
  • 38 weeks 4 days. Still 1-2cm and 50% after 2 weeks. Had contractions 2-3 mins apart Saturday but was sent home and now they are sporadic. Lost my mucus plug yesterday. Have an induction scheduled for the 24th but the doctor thinks I will go on my own before then. Just tried eating pineapple and has some "special" time with the hubs so hoping that kicks things into gear tonight!
