Summer crawlers

So LO still isn't walking (so close!) and the weather is really warm. I've never had a crawler in the summer. His knees are bare due to shorts and I am cringing watching him crawl on my parents' patio that is poured concrete with rocks in it. Ouch! He crawls all over all sorts of rough surfaces. Is there anything that can be done?

Re: Summer crawlers

  • I'm actually convinced that it was crawling on cement that nudged LO over the edge and made him try to start walking. A few weeks of roughed up knees and I think he was done with it!
  • Loading the player...
  • We are in the same boat! His little knees look so rough all the time! I'm pretty sure DS could walk if he would just do it. Hopefully they'll decide it's better to walk soon :)
  • LO is already a walker but she has tons of scraps on her legs already too. Maybe just have him wear pants when going outside? Or at least when you are going somewhere that he is likely to get scrapped up.

    My LO is not walking either. We were outside all weekend he was crawling in the grass, but it was cool enough to have pants on. His eczema on his legs really flared up though!

    Could you bring a blanket for him to crawl on? Or maybe sit on the grass if there's a spot?
  • Maybe it will motivate him to walk... He's so close. I guess we could add some blankets to the patio to soften it a little. He's so hard to contain!
  • I saw these hilarious knee guard things at BRU. It's like short legwarmers. Maybe you could just cut the tops off a pair of your h's socks to put around his knees?
  • My LO is not quite walking yet either! She is so close and walks a bit around the house but she finds it quicker to just drop down and crawl. I hate bringing her outside! I don't mind the grass but we have a huge concrete patio and she just wants to crawl all over! She even scraped her little toes dragging on the cement and bled a little! It is 90 degrees here so it is hard to keep her in pants or jeans! I wish she would just walk already! She is so close and I know she can do it but she literally PREFERS crawling! Stubborn booger!

    @yellowflower15 is LO walking yet?

    J started really walking just a few weeks ago.  I've heard that the happier and more content a baby is, the less motivated they are to walk.
  • @smushi - not quite, but so close. He can stand from sitting without any assistance from people or furniture, he can stand on his own for quite a while and usually decides To sit down rather than falling, and he's walking holding on to one hand, but won't take a step on his own. Seems like he's waiting until he's 100%. He's still a little unsteady when walking with assistance.

    Clearly I have a well adjusted child :) I'll take it ;) I think it's more that he's a very efficient crawler, so doesn't feel the need to walk. But I agree that the rough patio was a motivator - he started doing a downward dog style crawl/walk to avoid hurting his knees. Funny kid.

    @yellowflower15 I think we have the same kid haha! C just took her first steps- only about 3; and still prefers crawling! C also does the bear crawl thing on the lawn and cement; it's hilarious!

    This is us too! I'm 99% sure he could walk if he would just do it. He basically runs around the house pushing anything he can, so I'm afraid he's gonna be everywhere and fast when he realizes he can walk :)
  • Bear crawl! Good description @kkaew816. Maybe that's what everyone calls it and I'm just oblivious :)
  • My first didn't walk until almost 16 months, so I'm used to this ;) but I really thought he was going to walk sooner since his previous gross motor skills were very average in timing. This is still within the normal range though.
