Baby Names

What do you think of the name Hazel?

We have a 3 year old dd named Cora. We are team green and expecting in October. Working ok names for both genders but really struggling with the the girls. We so far like Selena and Hazel. We like names with no known nickname. Since Cora is Greek we looked at Selena and thought it flowed well with our last name...which is schw****. Hazel is cute for a little girl and will fit an elderly lady but what about in between...does it work? Also we don't like names that are too trendy...names that are off the top 100 list. :) thanks in advance! Suggestions are welcome. And middle names as well!

Re: What do you think of the name Hazel?

  • Honestly hazel is trending very quickly. It's jumping at pretty big jumps and almost broke the top 100 from being almost 900 in 2000. I much prefer Selena

  • I happen to really like Hazel. I think it is cute but also ages well.

  • I know that Hazel is becoming trendy, but I love it. Much prefer it over Selena. And I think it sounds nice with Cora.

  • I prefer Hazel to Selena but Hazel might be too popular for your taste. I do love Serena though.

  • I prefer Hazel to Selena. While popular, it does pair nicely with Cora.
  • I like Hazel, but it is trend city right now thanks to The Fault in our Stars. I think Selena will be a better fit for you.

  • I love Hazel, but it is far more trendier then Selena, which I also love.

You have two great name choices, I don't think you can go wrong with either.
  • I've never been a fan of Hazel. All I hear is nasal. I'm not in love with Selena but it is pretty. Here are some other names that I think sound nice with Cora. I admit that they're not the most unique names but I think they have the same sweet and vintage vibe that Cora does.

    Heidi
    Julia
    Ruby
    Nina
    Lena
    Marie
    Maya
    Diana
  • I love Hazel. I think it's a perfect pair with Cora. I don't think it's too popular/trendy.
  • I think hazel is really cute, I think it ages well and matches with Cora

Could you maybe elaborate? (Really curious why you would have such a strong opinion on it.)

I really like Hazel. I didn't know about the Faults in our Stars connection, though. If that isn't something that bothers you, I'd definitely go for Hazel. Selena is nice as well, but nms, and I also think Hazel works better with Cora.
  • I love Hazel! Had no idea it was trendy. I don't know any. And just as well, I think there is a difference between a modern, unique name becoming popular versus a classic people are finally recognizing as a great name.
  • I love Hazel!!
  • i will be the hater.
i hate hazel. i think it is a harsh sounding name not to mention a 80 year old lady.
  • Im currently in love with hazel. I don't care for Selena. In high school I knew a Cylina. Is that a legit spelling? If it is, I much prefer it. If it's not, ignore.
  • It just makes me think of Watership Down. Maybe you should call her Hazel Rah. Lol. Kidding.

    Great book though.

  • Ick! Not a fan of Hazel!! Too old fashioned!

    Great book though.

I didn't even think of Watership Down.

Personally, that makes it an even better reason to use Hazel.

I actually love the name Hazel. But I loved the book Watership Down so much that I named my childhood tabby cat Hazel. I have... association issues. But it is a lovely, classic name. I will say, I would immediately like a child named Hazel. It's good mojo, or whatever.

Edited for leaving out the name of the book. Duh.

It's not my style at all. It makes me think of an older lady. I'm not a fan of all of these older names making a comeback.
If it's something you strongly like, then go for it. I'm just an Internet stranger. :)

I really like it and have been considering using it. I am a little worried that it's becoming the next trendy name, but if that's the case I guess we can be part of the trend setters!
  • I love love Hazel! My brother named his baby girl Hazel Rose. It's a very classic name :-)
  • I love Cora and Hazel!
  • I love Hazel and I think it's great with Cora.

It's very trendy, I don't particularly like it
  • I like it but I'm worried it's getting too trendy. Hazel and Cora are cute together! I'm not a fan of Selena.
  • I am so sad at how trendy this name has become. This was my #1 girl name when I had my son three years ago. It is/was at the top of my list if we were to have a girl this time around. My hesitation is how popular it has become. I'd hate it if she was the Sara of my generation (not saying there is anything wrong with the name. I just felt bad because they ALWAYS had to tack on their last initial).

  • Cora is a beautiful name. Hazel is lovely (as is Heidi, as someone else suggested) and I'm not crazy about Selena, it's ok but nms.
  • I love Hazel...I would use it myself if it went with our last name.  Selena is very pretty too, it rolls of the tongue.  I don't think you can go wrong with either!
  • Both names are great!!!

  • What about Hattie?
