I messed up today...please, no judgement.

So...i messed up today and helped DH prime a dresser for our babies room; not thinking it was a huge deal because we did it outside, and the fumes from the primer didn't smell very strong. When my mom came home (as we did it in their yard) she was like "your probably not supposed to be doing that", so I looked it up and now I'm really freaking myself out. I know some of you are going to think I'm a moron and that its just common sense, but I honestly didn't think it would be the end of the world..please refrain from commenting if you're just going to post something judgemental or rude as I already feel bad enough. The fumes didn't make me dizzy or anything, nor did I even really notice a strong smell, but I'm freaking out now and silently beating myself up for being so dumb.

  • You were outside. It's probably fine. Don't stress!

You are most likely fine! It happened, it's in the past! :) don't worry mama these are guidelines but you know what ? Many women have done a lot worse before knowing about these precautions. Just don't do it again and I think you will be ok.

I didn't know I was pregnant and did a heavy duty chemical clean of both bathrooms and kitchen. We are both still ok :)

  • I'm sure its fine! I accidentally washed Hubby's uniforms with pens in his pockets. I didn't realize until they were half way done drying. Our drier was ruined. Pinterest said acetone and hairspray would clean it so I was inhaling those chemicals for a good 15 min. I didn't know I was pregnant and had no idea it was that harmful! Baby is happy and healthy now. :) Don't stress too much and don't be too hard on yourself. I'm sure you're fine mama! :)
  • You should be perfectly fine, being outside is going to dilute the fumes.

  • I was talking about how we are hiring someone to paint all the bedrooms since I can't help and more than one person was like "you can paint just open the windows I did it for all my kids and was fine" I'm NOT taking their advice but since you were outside you should definitely be fine
  • I'm a crazy lurker but I just wanted to tell you my OB said painting and such is perfectly okay as long as the space you are doing it in is ventilated (open window) etc. Since you were outside, I'd say you were PLENTY well ventilated. :) Don't worry too much. Truthfully, you worrying will do more harm than the fumes would. Baby is super resiliant in there. :)
  • You will be absolutely fine. I painted restaurant bathroom stalls with strong oil paint last pregnancy. People love love love to say "you probably shouldnt do that..."

For those of you wanting to paint rooms (the nursery, whatever), I highly recommend looking for Low/No VOC (volatile organic compounds) paint. We found it at Sherwin Williams but you should be able to find it at most hardware/paint stores.
  • I actually asked my OB about painting while pregnant, he told me to just make sure the area is well ventilated after the first trimester and everything will be fine. Don't stress!
  • Also asked my doctor about painting. She said as long as it's ventilated and you take breaks it's fine. She said we no longer use lead based paint, so the chemicals are not as bad as they once were. Don't beat yourself up! You can't plop yourself down on a couch for 9 months, that wouldn't be advised either.

I have eaten bologna and a hot dog. There are so many don'ts it's almost impossible to keep up with. I'm sure it's fine, mama, don't worry. :)

My friend is an OBGYN and she primed and painted a bunch of furniture for her daughters nursery while she was pregnant. And obviously everything was fine and she is a happy and adorable 3 year old who loves her room. :)
  • I painted my entire nursery (and will again if the sex is different) and painted a crib during my first pregnancy.  Don't freak out.
  • Try not to be too hard on yourself. As the previous ladies said, I've also heard that it is okay to paint as long as it's ventilated and if you felt that well while doing it, I'm sure it will be fine

nah you're fine. Really, you are. Think about all the estheticians and mechanics and chemists and other people who carry babies, perfectly healthy babies, around all kinds of chemicals. Think about women giving birth in cities like Beijing where the air is literally poison (apparently living in Beijing is like having a pack-a-day habit)

You're obviously being very careful and a little bit of chemical fume is gonna be ok :) Relax and get ready to tell a funny story to your kid later.

As PPs said, you did not mess up. In actuality, you did everything right.

  • Don't worry Hun you are fine. I asked my Ob/Gyn about that stuff because I'm in the middle of a kitchen remodel so I'm around a lot of fumes right now. She told me the fumes which shouldn't be a lot aren't bad, if anything they would only bother you more with a heightened sense of smell.
  • I'm planning on staining a table in a couple weeks!
I played a round of minigolf then saw a sign that said not to play if you're pregnant. I had to roll my eyes at that one:)
  • Wait, no pregnant mini golfing?! That's hillarious!
  • I know I thought it was crazy. My doctor said I'm allowed to regular golf. I'm sure it was a liability thing.
  • I know everyone has already said the same thing, but it never hurts to hear it again. You and baby will both be fine. You were in a well-ventilated area and you were on alert for fumes if they got too strong. The point is to not do those things often throughout your pregnancy. You're a good Mommy for worrying!
  • Thank you for the kind words everyone!! I'm still feeling quite stressed, but feeling slightly better that we were at least outside. I've been so careful about everything, and I hated that I dropped the ball. I'd just hate myself if something happened to my baby because of a stupid decision I made.
  • Just remember... There's women in this world who snorts pills or shoots up while pregnant. I messed up and did the same thing you did in my first trimester, but it was also outside so I didn't stress too much over it. :) baby is healthy so far!
  • I normally one who would react initially by saying you can't dictate how somebody would respond to your post.

Now that I have that disclaimer out of the way let me tell you that I think that you are absolutely fine! You're beating yourself up way more than you should be. You were outside and is very well ventilated area. I don't think that you could've done anything better and don't forget that when most of us were born, emissions from cars were 100 times worse than now. I would gather that maybe even some of our mothers smoked while they were pregnant with us. I'm sure some our grandparents definitely did when they were pregnant with our parents.

The point is, you were not inhaling cigarette smoke and you were not intentionally doing anything that would be harmful to your child. And the fact remains, you were outside in a well ventilated area so please don't beat yourself up mama. Nobody's going to come down as hard on you as you are. Hopefully you can try to relax and breathe easy knowing that you did the right thing by being outside.

    (((Hugs)))
  • I painted when I was like 6 weeks and my best friend and I painted her nursery when she was 35 weeks and her baby girl turned out just fine. Even stayed in there for an extra 2 weeks. I'm a hairstylist and I'm around chemicals all day. I'm sure baby will be just fine!
  • Its probably not a lot different from breathing in car fumes or ingesting toxins that end up in non organic foods etc. the body can handle getting rid of small amounts of toxins, as long as its not too much too often. Dont stress over it it will do you more harm.
