Stridor / Laryngomalacia?

My DD has been diagnosed with Laryngomalacia - literally 'floppy voicebox' which means she is constantly making a rasping/squeaking noise (stridor) when she breathes. She was diagnosed at one week old, and on 3rd July she is due to go in for surgery to make some small incisions in her voicebox which should help fix the problem.

I was wondering if anyone else has any experience of this condition? It's so hard to see her struggling for breath every day, and the constant noise is also driving me crazy. As much as I don't want her to have surgery, I cannot wait for the noise to stop and for her to be able to breathe normally.

Re: Stridor / Laryngomalacia?

  • My older son had this. Same situation as yours! We had a target surgery date and if by that date his weight and feeding strength were up to par we were able to cancel the surgery. By about 8-9 months he had outgrown the noise. I hope that helps. Feel free to msg me if you have questions.

  • I showed my pedi a video of my sons stridor. It only happened a couple of times. The biggest problem is he swallows a ton of air and gulps when eating. He's 5 weeks old and weighs about over 13 lbs (10 lb 4oz at birth) so it's not affecting his eating but his pedi just said basically he will grow out of it. It's so heartbreaking to watch them struggle though.

  • Thanks both. Makes me feel better to know I'm not the only one and that there is hope the noise won't be forever and she'll be able to breathe normally soon..!
  • Just a thought we weren't able to breastfeed because of the breathing but I pumped and I remember they recommended dr Browns bottles with a slow flow nipple to help him coordinate breathing/sucking etc... Hope that helps!
  • Yeah DD doesn't BF either. I'm hoping that post surgery we can think about trying again, but all depends on her recovery. We're using Tommee Tippee bottles at the minute and don't seem to have any major problems, but I'll look into the dr Brown ones. Thanks again!
  • My daughter does this but not often enough that I'm worried about it. I hear they just grow out of it but if its constant I guess that's another story.
