Help please - is it colic?

hi all. Hoping someone can help. My DD is 5 weeks and has been a pretty good baby from the start, eating lots, sleeping lots and causing relatively few problems.

However, for the last 36-48hrs she has barely slept for more than a few hours (last night DH was dealing with her until 1am, then I was up 2am-5am with her, and she's hardly gone back to sleep since!). She cries in what seems to be discomfort and will not settle, and when she does eat, she often spits up quite a lot, which she hasn't really done before. I'm at my wits end as I'm on my own next week and can't handle so little sleep and no idea how to help her.

Anyone got any thoughts/advice?

  • My lactation consultant said that around 6 weeks they get grumpy and that it should pass. She may have gas. You can try some gripe water or gas drops as well

We formula feed our little one and he started being more fussy around 2 weeks - he seems to have a lot of gas. We tried ovol drops and probiotics without any relief. 3 days ago we were given Zantac for babies so hopefully this starts to help soon!
  • The 6 week fussy period is typically a 2-3 hour time period each evening for a couple weeks. What you are dealing with isn't that...if baby is only getting a handful of hours a sleep, I would contact the dr
  • Two ideas...one is she is over tired. My DS was a mess yesterday when he didn't get his normal mid day nap.
Another is that around 6 weeks they make a mental leap and that makes them fussy and clingy.
Those are my other two ideas other than the normal reflux or tummy issues.

  • Sounds like it's her going through her first leap. Try the Wonder Weeks app - it'll give you info on the several mental leaps babies go through.
