should I use a Pull-up or no

I'd post this on the PT board but I need advice from people who's LOs are trained already.

DS has been doing great with potty training.  We started 3 weeks ago and he's had no accident's (pee or poop) in a week.  We went straight to underwear (even at night).

I'm taking the kids on a day trip to see my family 2.5 hrs away and it might not be easy to find a bathroom along the way (could be about 20 miles down the road).  Do you think it would set him back if we used a pull up just for the trip?  I'd still try to find the nearest bathroom but if it's really far we'd be covered incase he has an accident.

So use a pull-up or suck it up and deal if he has an accident?  Thanks!

Re: should I use a Pull-up or no

  • Since he stays dry even while he's sleeping, I'd just let him go in underwear at that short of a distance.  We did use pullups in that situation with my oldest (and with my now 2 year old), but he would pee if he fell asleep for a nap.  Once he stopped having accidents, I didn't feel that using pull ups set him back at all.

  • I'm not there yet, still working on my almost 3.5 year old, so not sure if I would do this personally, but a few of my friends keep a portable potty in the car.

  • I have a travel potty that I take with me especially on trips like this.  It folds up nice and small and has bags that you use.  Look on Amazon.com.  Otherwise, it could really go either way.  If you are in the car and don't go the pull-up route, I would put a towel under him in the carseat in case he does have an accident (or something else that is more waterproof but won't drive him crazy).  With the travel potty, I have pulled off wherever possible but that is safe and it has always worked (so far),  We drive 12 hours to see my parents at least 2x a year and I have 2 little girls - one who has been trained and can hold it longer and one in the process of training who can't hold it very long yet.

  • When DD1 was newly trained (she was about 3.5 so a little older than your little guy) we'd "make" her wear a pullup if the car ride was more than about an hour.  I didn't want to deal with the cleanup in case we had *just* passed the exit for a bathroom with the next one 20 miles down the road (like you said).

She was more mad than anything because she was now a big girl who wore undies.  We let her put her underwear over her pullup as a compromise.

FWIW, she actually never had an "accident" or used the pull-ups.  And it didn't set us back at all.

  • I put a disposible changing pad under my DD for car rides for a while just so I wouldn't have to deal with a wet carseat, but she never had a problem.

We took the 8 hour drive to my parents just a few months after she was trained with no problem.

I have no issue with pulling over and having her pee on the side of the road, though.

Ditto all of this.  Minus the 8 hour trip LOL

  • Since I have 3 PTd now,  (and lugging 4 into a gas station restroom is NOT pleasant) I keep a cheap potty chair, bottle of water, can of lysol and hand sanitizer in my car.  We've used it plenty of times.  You can pull over nearly anywhere and they can go.  Then dump, rinse, lysol, and get back on the road.

  • We had to use pullups for a while during naps and bedtime.
  • We use pull-ups when we spend the night at someone else's house, and that does seem to set ML back on nighttime protocol.  But, we also use pull ups in the car for long drives, especially when we're caravaning with other cars, and there has never been a setback in the daytime PT.
