  • You can buy nitrate free bacon.

  • For the first 3 months I was being quite anal about what I could and couldn't eat.. But hear past few weeks I've lightened up a bit. I figure that as long as you know your food and from a reputable source (I buy foods that are organic and from my local health food store) and you are not over indulging you should be fine!

I initially tried heating my turkey and then cooling it down before I ate my sandwich and it ruined it. Yuck.
  • I found nitrate free hot dogs, deli meats and bacon so I haven't had too many issues i felt guilty for drinking a 4oz glass of sweet tea last night because i gave up caffeine completely...
  • The only things my dr was really serious about was steaming deli meat, staying away from raw foods and limiting caffeine.
I second what a PP said. The no soft cheese rule is outdated -most of it is pasteurized now.
She said things with nitrates (ie -the beloved hot dog) were not a "no", but a "sometimes".
Also I've taken to putting my juice in a wine glass. It makes me feel better.
  • I want a deli sandwich from publix and I may have to get one. The ice cream listeria is scary, where I live they found listeria at a local ice cream shop AGAIN yesterday. I just pray over everything I eat.
  • I'm a FTM but have been very laid back about the rules. I eat high quality foods and avoid scetchy places in general so am not concerned about listeria. Moderation has always served me well! Bring on the blue cheese, nitrate free hot dogs, deli meats ( I had some amazing cured ham a friend smuggled back from Spain!), bagels and lox, sushi, coffee, wine, tuna, all in small quantities and moderation.
  • I have been eating Subway but I get my subs toasted.  I don't eat Sushi so that isn't a problem.  I eat hot dogs and an occasional piece of fish.  I am really not that overly cautious about what I eat.

I agree, right now your chances of catching a food born illness seems to stem from unclean facilities where the food is made or from fruits and veggies.  If I feel the place is clean and well kept, then I will probably eat something on the no list :-)

  • I am not a huge lunch meat fan so I haven't had that, and I've stayed away from sushi. I can't stomach coffee or tea right now so no worries about the caffeine! I have eaten hot dogs but my dr said they are ok in moderation as long as I don't eat them cold (ew). I have tuna once a week....my bigger problem is trying to eat healthy. Horrible morning sickness and food aversions; sometimes the only thing I want is junk food and then I feel guilty!!

  • For those of you wanting tuna, try the Totally Tuna from Jimmy John's. Drool..... =P~
  • Lol, idk what's even on the danger list! I eat deli meat everyday, not too much soft cheese though and I don't like sushi. I guess deli meat is my biggest culprit
  • My doctor said no processed meat, nothing raw and no high Mercury fish. I have been eating Boars Head deli meat occasionally from publix because I know it's high quality and I'll eat raw sushi occasionally from a very reputable restaurant and I've been fine. Occasionally I will have a hot dog too. I'm a FTM and was scared at first but my SIL said she ate everything with all 4 and all 4 are healthy. I do try to avoid processed foods, fast food and junk food. I feel that's much worse for you than a roll of sushi with raw tuna.
  • I've been eating deli meat mostly nitrate free but some subway and YES I had jersey mikes
  • I have had tuna and coffee. Thats about it i think, there seems to be an awful lot on the foods to avoid list, i've also had hotdogs had no idea the were to be avoided till reading this.
  • I've been doing pretty well with following the "rules" but the other day I was about to pour some Caesar dressing on my salad and got nervous because it's on the no-no list (raw eggs) So I called my mom and asked her if I should pick a different dressing. She said "just don't drink or smoke and you will be fine." Then she said "people used to drink and smoke throughout their pregnancy, so you would probably even be fine doing that." Ha I'm not going to do that last part but good to remember!
  • Everything in moderation ladies!
  • I have lunch meat every now and again but ive always bought nitrate free deli meat. I make ham and cheese or turkey and cheese rolled up in croissants for my kids at lunch time so the meat is already heated and I don't worry about it. I'm dying for tuna salad on fresh Italian bread. That might be my lunch tomorrow since this will be the first time I've have it since I found out I was pregnant.
  • I wish I was relaxed as you ladies :( no bacon or hot dogs or cold sand which meat in this mom... Or sushi. Mmm California rolls . I've just been eating bread cheese meat and veggies with ranch dip

California rolls should be fine, the crab is cooked. Just don't eat it every day!

You bet I was shoving kani in my mouth last night when we were at a Japanese place, mmm.
Is heartily apologizing to her child in advance for genes that predispose them to shitty vision and being Too Damn Tall.
  • I've stayed away from most of it but definitely getting my weekly allotment of caffeine and seafood. How about alcohol? I don't think I will have any while pregnant (nowhere can I find that even a little is safe) but I've had a lot of girlfriends who drink wine near the end...???
  • I try to be careful.  I saw fresh squeezed juice on a list on here and was not happy.  I discussed it with the midwife who said it was fine so I drink it ALL the time.

My doctor says two glasses a week is safe. Studies done in europe say this amount is beneficial. This advice spans trimesters.

So yes, there is lots of information out there that support it as AT LEAST not something to be demonized. If you're drinking two glasses a day, you're probably overdoing it. Two glasses a week is fine.

lolwut? We're not supposed to eat subway now? haha this has just gotten ridiculous. I had some freak even try to tell me to avoid tabouli because parsley can cause contractions. Turns out this is true. If you eat LITERALLY  a carful of it. I've been eating it since the beginning and contractions? Nope. Still pregnant and the kid is healthy.

Some people are just out to fear monger and i refuse to be that kind of parent. If i'm like this now, i'll be an obnoxious mom later.
  • I have been following the rules (this is my first pregnancy) but now that I have my appetite back I am realllly craving a hoagie. Just yesterday I told my husband that the moment I get this baby out of me, he'd better be waiting at the ready with a hoagie :)  We'll see if I actually last that long. I crave them so much in the summer.
  • I ate sushi today and it was fantastic.  I pretty much eat the same as I eat in real life, but I've had way more wheat since getting pregnant.  Haven't cut back on runny eggs or lunch meat or anything. I am a freak about a ton of things baby-related, this isn't one of them.
  • I literally read this thread while eating a few California rolls. At first, I was skeptical about what to eat and what not to eat but talking to my OB helped calm me down about the do's and dont's.
  • Soft cheeses are ok if there pasteurised iv not heard the deli meat one here in Ireland my doc said to stay away from vit a
  • I've had soft cheeses that have been baked (e.g. Goat chz on pizza at a restaurant) and buy feta from the store b/c it's made with pasteurized milk. I've had pink vodka sauce which some people say to avoid but the amount of etoh is so low and my husband (medical provider) made a good point - if it's ok for kids to eat it then it's probably fine. I'm going to be smart but not neurotic. The first things I'm going to eat postpartum are: turkey club and buffalo ckn with blue cheese!!!!

I had never heard that you shouldn't eat hot dogs until I came to boards like these, what to eat and what not to eat. What's the reasoning? I mean, they're cooked... Is it the nitrates and salt or something else?

    It's the nitrates...but I still eat them!

They sell nitrate free dogs too!!

Omg I want ranch. Right now.

Yes i have also been told to stay away from vitamin A as a uk guideline. I have never really questioned why but found this link from the nhs that explains it.

  • Yep. I've had queso from a Mexican restaurant. I heard it's very hard to find un-pasteurized cheese from restaurants in the U.S. And it's served hot so wouldn't that be enough to get rid of the listeria? Someone tell me if I'm wrong, though! Also, I ate sushi yesterday but it had crab meat, which I've already had once this time around. From what I understand you can have it as long as you limit it. And I've had limited servings of tuna. I very much still limit my caffeine intake, but I don't cut it out completely... I get caffeine free coke and decaf coffee but here and there I'll have a glass of sweet tea and of course still chocolate.
  • @AlexandriaNewton please don't try and tell me I can't eat queso. You might see real tears.
  • No no @magburt! I've heard it's on the list because it can have unpasteurized cheese, which brings a risk of listeria.. but typically cheese in the U.S. IS pasteurized. Plus it's heated up! I've eaten it and baby is fine! I don't see harm there. I loooooooooooove queso.
  • I'm the same as most find stuff I can keep down is a win in my book or just being able to eat at all. At my last check up I actually took in a menu to my favorite sushi restaurant and asked my Dr if what I normally ate I still could and for me I can. She told me as long as it is in moderation you can eat what you did before just not a buffet every night. So next time hubby and I have date night I know where we are going

I'm a FTM but I've been pretty good-no raw sushi (California rolls are fine) or smoked salmon but many are right. It's pretty easy to find things like pasteurized feta. As for the deli meats nonsense, all things in moderation. When I asked my dr, she said "do you think women in Japan don't eat sushi? And you have as good of a chance of contracting listeria from a salad than deli meat. So enjoy that turkey sandwich. Just don't buy it at the gas station." Really good points when you think about it.
  • How I feel every day. If I wanna eat it, I eat it lol
  • I'll just say I'm dying for a Wegmans sub (it's a New York thing) loaded up with turkey meat, cheese, sub oil, etc. also, I couldn't help but go to Heids yesterday for a coney...and it was soo dang good!!!
