IUD pros & cons?

Let's hear 'em ladies. I went back on the pill, as that's what I did for 9 years prior to TTC. Well it hasn't even been a month and I am just OVER it. I am leaning towards the Mirena but open to the paragaurd as well. Just need something that is very effective.

Re: IUD pros & cons?

  • As soon as I stop BFing, I plan to go back to the NuvaRing. I know that wasn't anything you mentioned as an option, but I loved it

  • I've considered that but it just doesn't sound appealing to me for some reason.

I loved my merena. Had mine for four and a half years. I did experience cramping for the first month I had it and then after that it was great. My period went away too.... I had maybe two a year and they were so light that I didn't even need panty liners. Only down side was that hubby could feel it and didnt like it but he got used to feeling it

I'm getting Mirena after talking with doc yesterday. She said the difference between Mirena and Paraguard was that women reported more cramping and bleeding with Paraguard. I had Implanon (implant in arm) before DD and it lasted 3 years. Worked great, but my periods were wacky..never regular and sometimes twice a month. NuvaRing was good too, but it's still something you have to remember to do.
  • Getting Mirena in two weeks.. Haven't been on it before! Interested in others experiences as well!
  • Had a discussion with OB's office today... After infertility the irony is even considering birth control in the first place. They really pushed the Paraguard, but I'm not convinced about any BC at this point.
  • I have a friend who had the paraguard and she said she loved it despite the super heavy bleeding and cramping it causes... She said it also gave her diarrhea for the first two weeks also. Doesn't sound too appealing!

I had the copper iud before. I was told to give it three months for my body to adjust but it only took two: some cramping and spotting in that time. Once it evened out it was great! My periods were a bit lighter than before (previously very heavy) and it worked great considering I had it out August 16 and my LMP was August 19
  • So, maybe TMI... but when you ladies have the IUD, do you still pull out?

DH and I were very lucky that we've always just pulled out in the past (no other bc). The first time we "tried" we were successful. Now I dont want to take the chance of getting prego again and want an IUD... but I still feel like I wouldn't feel comfortable unless we pulled out.
  • I had two Mirenas before conceiving. Loved them. I cramped for about one day after insertion of the first one and then had no other negative issues. Didn't have my period for 6 years and didn't miss it. And no, I didn't pull out. It's 99.9% effective.

Same here! We got pregnant within the first month of not pulling out. It was the only BC we used for at least 2 years. The pill made my drive plummet. I'm now considering the iud too but I don't like the invasiveness of it and it creeps me out that H would be able to feel it. It's pretty effective though so I doubt we'd still do the pulling out if I went on it.
  • I agree, the only thing that sort of weirds me out is that DH might be able to feel. I used to be on the nuvaring with an ex, and he claims he couldn't ever feel that... so I'm wondering why this would be any different if the only thing outside of the uterus is a string. Of course I suppose different men have different sensitivities.
  • @SmrBrd2012 & @danibonello -- you guys are risky, yet talented to never have issues with the pull out method. I am always too nervous. Did you avoid your fertile window or just go for it all the time? I would love to do that but I am such an anxious person that I would constantly be taking pregnancy tests. Lol

We just went for it whenever... we have always been very committed to one another even before we were married and decided that if we had an "oops" we would make it work. I did have a couple of scares over the years, but no accidents!

It's a different story now though, I'm not nearly as daring!!

Same here!! I'm definitely not planning on using this method again since we absolutely cannot afford another LO in daycare, lol.
