Are you eating items on the "danger" list?

Talking with girlfriends who are pregnant or have kids... it's surprising to hear how many eat soft cheese, deli meats, sushi, etc during pregnancy. Most have said they followed the rules loosely the first time around, but are much more relaxed on #2 + +

I ate a turkey sandwich on 2 occasions (i'm 11w), and mainly cooked sushi. Is anyone NOT following by those rules?
Just curious to hear what others think, especially with most of the bacteria outbreaks being in fruit and veggies, yet they don't tell us to stay away from those.

  • Stm here. I don't do out of my way but I definitely eat whatever I want. I have bad aversions and low appetite so if I want it, that's good enough for me!
  • This content has been removed.
  • I've been drinking some raw milk! It's from a very reputable farm and I drank it all the time before getting pregnant. I've also had tuna which I know for some, is a no no.
  • Yes, I've had many deli sandwiches. And probably my limit of caffeine. But I'm in the "whatever I can keep down" camp. So if a bologna sandwich sounds good, that's what I'm having.
  • I eat everything. Including 5 rolls of delish raw sushi tonight! Mmm!

  • I've been enjoying hot subs from firehouse subs. I think you could probably just get a regular deli sub toasted and that would work too, right?

  • I totally still put cookie dough pieces in my Yogurtland.
I don't eat meat so the whole deli meat thing doesn't apply to me....Tofurky has been a protein life-saver for me the past few weeks.
And I can't do sushi since I got food poisoning from it a few years back. Literally every time I get near it I feel like I'm going to hurl.

I've not really been following them, plenty of sandwich meat, hot dogs, cookie dough ice cream, and even lobster occasionally. Though I am careful about where I'm getting everything so it's fresh.
  • @taysun as far a cookie dough ice cream goes, I believe most brands use cookie dough that doesn't include raw eggs, so I think that one would be on the safe list anyway

@breezypip I'm not sure, I get it from a place that makes all their ice cream fresh. But that's good to know, thank you!
  • Yep! I eat deli sandwiches and sushi! I don't care for most soft cheeses so that's not a problem for me. I just make sure it's all fresh and that I don't get gas station sushi or sandwiches. I figure if Japanese women don't stop eating sushi when pregnant then why should I? :) and I ate deli meat (though not sushi) with my first and no problems there! :)

Love me some hot dogs and Jimmy Johns or Jersey Mikes. No shame in my Italian game, here.
  • When I was pregnant with my first 4 years ago. The only thing the Dr told me to limit was tuna, and fish with high Mercury levels. Never mentioned anything about hotdogs, deli meat, runny yolk... Etc ... My son will be 4 in September and he's perfectly healthy !

No I've followed all the rules and I REALLY want a club sandwich from Jersey Mikes! My Dr was very adamant about avoiding certain foods. This is my first child but I'm sure I'd be more lax with the second.

I've been craving Jersey Mikes for weeks and finally gave in tonight. I just ate every single bite and only have a little remorse. I have tried to be careful and avoid most things on the danger list but I'm in the "most things are safe in moderation" camp so every once in a while I'm going to cheat.
  • I am pretty relaxed but careful. I'll eat deli meat if it's hot/in a hot sandwich or panini. I eat all cheese as long as it's pasteurized. I eat cooked sushi and I drink 1-2 cups of coffee a day per my doctor. Sometimes I do half caf. I stay away from swordfish or other fish high in Mercury but tuna is fine in moderation. I think you gotta do what you feel most comfortable with and use common sense about safe places to eat.

@taysun what's wrong with lobster? I eat it all the time (mom lobster rolls) since it's cooked.

I haven't cut out any foods. I've limited fish and caffeine.

I eat all my deli meat hot. Drink a small cup of coffee 2-3 times a week, sometimes less. I also just ate some feta cheese in some pasta salad. Oops. But I hate sushi so I'm okay there. My OB gave the green light for the amount and way I consume these "bad food items"
  • I had never heard that you shouldn't eat hot dogs until I came to boards like these, what to eat and what not to eat. What's the reasoning? I mean, they're cooked... Is it the nitrates and salt or something else?

Yaaaasss! Jersey Mikes! I want the turkey sandwich, Mikes way with mayo and extra pickles! My first meal after my daughter was born was exactly that! You can have them grill the turkey beforehand to kill any bacteria but it's honestly not the same
  • My Dr said I could have deli meat if it was steamed but I want a cold cut! Oh well I might bake a ham this week so I can have a ham sandwich.
  • Lunch meat. Check.
    Fish fry. Check.

    It's the nitrates...but I still eat them!

  • Most of the things on the danger list are things that could make you sick...such as listeria from deli meat or food poisoning from raw sushi or soft cheeses...which could then harm you and baby. So eating these items from reliable places is safe in my opinion

    Baaaaaaaacon.
  • My doc said it was fine to eat deli meat as long as it was from a larger chain and not some corner market as they are regulated on how things are prepared. I was so happy I went and got a turkey sandwich right after.
  • It's interesting to see the different things drs in the U.S. put on the NO list compared to Spain (where I'm living). I can eat all the deli meats I want! Just not any dried salted cured meats. I have a turkey and cheese sandwich several times a week! Pregnant women also smoke here... I'm not a smoker but it's common to see them puffing away. Apparently the drs say the stress of quitting cold turkey is more harmful to baby than 1 cigarette a day.
  • What have you ladies heard about chunk light tuna?
  • I've heard chunk light tuna has less Mercury than chunk white tuna and to only eat tuna once a week. I usually love tuna but I'm on a no seafood kick, so that's sad :((
  • I don't eat much tuna but I see no problem with high quality lunch meats (OB said they are fine to eat in moderation). As for soft cheese....most soft cheese in the US is pasteurized...So no issues.

It seems as if most cases of listeria recently are fruit veggies and Hummus!

Nitrates or something. Not happening. I love bacon.
  • I've been craving a cold bologna sandwich for weeks! Trying not to give in... Although I give in to other bad things on occasion.. Hot dogs, pop, candy bars, fast food...
